  • Cu-free Bi-Sr-Ca-O powder mixtures were screen-printed on Cu tapes and heat-treated at 850-$870^{\circ}C$ for several minutes in air, oxygen, nitrogen and low oxygen pressure. Cu-free precursors were composed of Bi_{x}$SrCaO_{y}$ (x=1.2-2). In order to obtain the optimum heat-treatment condition, we studied on an effect of the precursor composition, the printing thickness and the heat-treatment atmosphere on the superconducting properties of Bi2212 films and the reaction mechanism of their rapid formation. Microstructures and phases of thick films were analyzed by optical microscope and XRD. The electric properties of superconducting films were examined by the four probe method. At heat-treatment temperature, the thick films were in a partially molten state by liquid reaction between CuO in the oxidized copper tape and the precursors which were printed on Cu tapes.

  • In order to investigate 95% retained critical current of Bi-2223/Ag tapes under various stress-strain conditions, load cell attached tension and bending apparatus was used. The critical current of stress-strained tape was degraded below 95% retained critical current when tension and bending was simultaneously applied together. But only one of this tension or bending did not degrade the tape below 95% retained critical current. Deformation temperature was important to maintain the 95% retained Ic of Bi-2223/Ag tapes after bending or tension deformation because mechanical strength of tapes can be changed drastically between room temperature and 77 K.

  • The transport current distribution across the tape width of a SmBCO coated conductor was investigated. The current distribution was estimated by applying an inversion process to the field distribution measured in the vicinity of the tape by using a scanning Hall probe method. The obtained result is well consistent with one predicted by the Bean model, however, at the edges the current are not constant and do not generally plateau, on the contrary.

  • For large scale applications of high temperature superconductor (HTS) such as transmission cables, motors and generators, long length of flexible HTS conductor is required. Currently, Bi-2223 HTS tape is capable of being fabricated in longer than 100 m length by industrial processes. In this study, we fabricated 100 m 19 filamentary Bi-2223 ($Bi_{1.8}Pb_{0.4}Sr_2Ca_2O_{10+x}$) HTS tape by PIT (Power in Tube) process. Critical current(IC) of this long length tape was measured 18.5 A at 77K, self field. Critical current of 100 m length tape was mainly resulted from the increase of inhomogeneity in oxide from the increase of inhomogeneity in oxide layer. Engineering critical current (Je=Ic/total tape cross-section area) that is important factor for practical applications and fabrication cost was measured 2.2 kA/cm2.

  • In a High temperature superconducting (HTS) tape with high aspect ratio, the magnetic field applied to the HTS tape can be different considerably within the HTS tape. The current distribution in the HTS tape is generally non-uniform because the current distribution is strongly dependent on the applied magnetic field. Non-uniform current distribution in a HTS tape has not been properly considered when the critical current has been estimated. This paper shows the calculation of critical current of a HTS magnet consisting of pancake windings. Non-uniform distribution of current in the HTS tape is considered during the calculation of the critical current. Results of calculation show the current concentrated in the middle part of the HTS tape which is used for one pancake winding.

  • The degradation behavior of the critical current $(I_c)$ of Bi-2223 superconducting tapes under pressurized liquid nitrogen were investigated using a newly developed p-shaped sample holder which gives a series of bending strains to a sample. Three kinds of commercially available multi-filamentary Bi-2223 superconducting tapes were used. At atmospheric pressure, the Ie degradation behavior depended on the manufacturing process undergone by each tape. The tapes externally reinforced or densified by over pressure showed better bending strain tolerance than the Ag alloy-sheathed Bi-2223 tape. But these tapes showed a significant $I_c$ degradation when pressurized to 1 MPa in liquid nitrogen. For all samples, after depressurization to atmospheric pressure from 1 MPa, the Ie was completely recovered to its initial values at atmospheric pressure. When the samples were subjected to a thermal cycle wherein the tape was warmed up to room temperature after being depressurized from 1 MPa, it was found that the larger degradation of $I_c$ occurred at the regions where significant ballooning occurred, such as $0\%\;and\;0.2\%$. However, an improved ballooning damage tolerance was observed in the highly-densified tape.

  • To verify the feasibility of bifilar winding type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using BSCCO tape, two types of magnets were fabricated and tested by short-circuit in this research. Even if the FCL using high Tc superconducting (HTS) tape has zero resistance in normal state, it needs to be wound as a bifilar winding for zero inductance. Solenoid type and pancake type bifilar winding magnets are designed and fabricated with the same length of BSCCO tape. The test system consists of AC power supply, transformer, fault switch, load and bifilar winding magnet. The applied AC voltages during fault duration, 0.1s, were from 0.5V to 20V. The test results without bifilar winding magnet were compared with those with each type magnets. The test results include voltage against magnet, transport current and generated resistance curve. Thermal stability, the recovery time, was studied from the results of two type magnets. The pancake type was the most effective to limit fault current but the solenoid type was thermally the most stable. From this research, short-circuit characteristics of the two types were obtained.

  • Wekk oriented $Bi_{2} Sr_{2} CaCu_{2} O_{8}$ suppercondcting thick films were fabricared on copper tape by LiReac-PreCu (liquid reaction between a Cu-free precousor and Cu tape) method. Cu-free precursor power which is composed of $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{5}$ was printed on a copper tape by screen printing and was heat-treated. The speciment were partially in a molten state at the heat treatment temperature (85$0^{\circ}C$~87$0^{\circ}C$). The heat heat treatments for the reaction were performed in air or low oxygen pressure in several stages. XRD analyses of the resulting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 superconducting tapes show that the $Bi_{2} Sr_{2} CaCu_{2} O_{8}$ phase is dominant and a small amount of $Bi_{2} Sr_{2} Cu_{2} O_{6}$ phase is detected. Both phases are aligned in the c-axis direction.
