  • The effect of electron beam (EB) irradiation on superconducting properties and microstructures of MgB2 bulk superconductors were investigated. At E-beam doses of 1×1016 e/cm2 and 1×1017 e/cm2, the effect of irradiation on a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of MgB2 was weak. As a dose increases to 5×1017 e/cm2, Tc decreases by 0.5 K. The critical current density (Jc) measured at 4.2 K and 20 K, and 0 T - 5 T increases slightly as exposure time increases. X-ray diffraction for the irradiation surface of MgB2 shows that the diffraction intensity of (hkl) peaks decreases proportionally as the exposure time increases. This indicates that the crystallinity of MgB2 was degraded by irradiation. TEM investigation for the irradiated sample showed distorted lattice structure, which is consistent with the XRD results. The Jc increase and Tc reduction of MgB2 by irradiation are believed to be caused by the lattice distortion.

  • Effects of neutron irradiation on the superconducting properties of the undoped $MgB_2$ and the carbon(C)-doped $MgB_2$ bulk superconductors, prepared by an in situ reaction process using Mg and B powder, were investigated. The prepared $MgB_2$ samples were neutron-irradiated at the neutron fluence of $10^{16}-10^{18}n/cm^2$ in a Hanaro nuclear reactor of KAERI involving both fast and thermal neutron. The magnetic moment-temperature (M-T) and magnetization-magnetic field (M-H) curves before/after irradiation were obtained using magnetic property measurement system (MPMS). The superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$) and transition width were estimated from the M-T curves and critical current density ($J_c$) was estimated from the M-H curves using a Bean's critical model. The $T_cs$ of the undoped $MgB_2$ and C-doped $MgB_2$ before irradiation were 36.9-37.0 K and 36.6-36.8 K, respectively. The $T_cs$ decreased to 33.2 K and 31.6 K, respectively after irradiation at neutron fluence of $7.16{\times}10^{17}n/cm^2$, and decreased to 22.6 K and 24.0 K, respectively, at $3.13{\times}10^{18}n/cm^2$. The $J_c$ cross-over was observed at the high magnetic field of 5.2 T for the undoped $MgB_2$ irradiated at $7.16{\times}10^{17}n/cm^2$. The $T_c$ and $J_c$ variation after the neutron irradiation at various neutron fluences were explained in terms of the defect formation in the superconducting matrix by neutron irradiation.

  • The Cu - $Nb_3Sn$ composites wire as a superconducting material was prepared by in situ method as follow: Cu - 15wt.% Nb alloys which were melted in a high -frequency induction furnace and casted in bar were cold-worked up to the final diameter of 0.24 mm, electroplated with Sn, pre-treated in two steps and then diffused at $550{\sim}650^{\circ}C$ for 24 ~ 96 hrs. The overall $J_c$ and $T_c$ of the specimens were measured by the four point-probe method at 10 K in the magnetic field of 0 Tesla. The overall $J_c$ of the composites wire which diffused at $550^{\circ}C$ after pre-treating in two steps were generally higher than those of the wire at either $600^{\circ}C$ or $650^{\circ}C$. For the specimens diffused at $550^{\circ}C$, the overall $J_c$ were increased until 72 hrs. of diffusion time and then decreased. However, in case of diffusion at $600^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$, the overall $J_c$ were gradually decreased from the beginning. The maximum overall $J_c$ obtained in this experiment was $1.3{\times}10^4\;A/cm^2$, which was measured for the specimen diffused at $550^{\circ}C$ for 72 hrs. When the specimens were diffused at $550^{\circ}C$ for 72 hrs, after pre-treating, the measured critical temperature, $T_c$ was 16.19 K. Similar $T_c$ value were obtained in other specimens regardless of diffusion time and temperature.

  • The most common technique to fabricate $MgB_2$ superconducting wire is by powder-in-tube (PIT) technique. Therefore, the starting powder for the processing of $MgB_2$ superconductors is an important factor influencing the superconducting properties and performance of the conductors. In this study, the influence of magnesium precursor powders and annealing temperatures on the transition temperatures ($T_c$) and critical current densities ($J_c$) of $MgB_2/Fe$ wires was investigated. All the $MgB_2/Fe$ wires were fabricated by in situ PIT process. It was found that higher $J_c$ was obtained for $MgB_2$ wires with smaller particle size of magnesium precursor powders. The $J_c$ also increases with decreasing annealing temperatures.

  • The effects of electron beam (EB) irradiation on the superconducting critical temperature ($T_c$) and critical current density ($J_c$) of YBCO films were studied. The YBCO thin films were irradiated using a KAERI EB accelerator with an energy of 0.2 MeV and a dose of $10^{15}-10^{16}e/cm^2$. A small $T_c$ decrease and a broad superconducting transition were observed as the EB dose increased. The value of $J_cs$ (at 20 K, 50 K and 70 K) increased at doses of $7.5{\times}10^{15}$ and $2.2{\times}10^{16}e/cm^2$. However, $J_cs$ decreased as the dose increased further. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that the c axis of YBCO was elongated and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) increased as the dose increased, which is strong evidence of the atomic displacement by EB irradiation. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the amorphous layer formed in the vicinity of the surfaces of the irradiated films. The amorphous phase was often present as an isolated form in the interior of the films. In addition to the formation of the amorphous phase, many striations running along the a-b direction of YBCO were observed. The high magnification lattice image showed that the striations were stacking faults. The enhancement of $J_c$ by EB irradiation is likely to be due to the lattice distortion and the formation of defects such as vacancies and stacking faults. The decrease in $J_c$ at a high EB dose is attributed to the extension of the amorphous region of a non-superconducting phase.

  • We have investigated the effect of different heat treatment processes on electrical and magnetic properties of Bi2212/Ag ROSAT wire. The ROSAT wire was fabricated by stacking and arranging 12 filaments Bi2212/Ag tapes in triple rotation symmetry in a Ag tube. ROSAT wires have been prepared using a partial melting method with changing $T_{max}$ and $T_a$ in oxygen atmosphere. The highest critical current density($J_c$) at 65 K under 0 T was $21,158\;A/cm^2$ for wire prepared $890\;^{\circ}C(T_{max})$ and $840\;^{\circ}C(T_a)$, respectively. SEM results indicated that the wire prepared at $890\;^{\circ}C(T_{max})$ and $840\;^{\circ}C(T_a)$ showed better directional phases than the other samples. However the result of magnetic susceptibility measurement indicates that the wire prepared $890\;^{\circ}C(T_{max})$ and $835\;^{\circ}C(T_a)$ had better superconducting phases than the other samples. It was revealed that heat treatment temperature was important factor for superconducting properties of the ROSAT wire.

  • Single-phase $YBa_2Cu_3O_{j-g}$ (YBC) ceramic samples were annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ under a flowing $O_2$ atmosphere for 0, 18, 36, 54 and 72. hours after sintering. The resistivities(p) and the critical current densities($J_c$) of the samples were measured in a temperature range 77 to 300 K by a four probe method, using silver paint contacts. The variations of the electrical properties with annealing time are explained in terms of flux pinning, percolation probability and randomness, and alignment of grains and twins. The anomalous increases in $J_c$ and $T_c$ observed in sample annealed for a relatively long time possibly due to alignment of grains and twins, may imply the occurrence of superconducting glass state in high-$T_c$ superconducting ceramic.

  • The effects of the heat-treatment temperature on the carbon (C) substitution amount, full width at half maximum (FWHM) value, critical temperature ($T_c$), critical current density ($J_c$) have been investigated for 10 wt % malic acid ($C_4H_6O_5$)-doped $MgB_2/Fe$ wires. All the samples were fabricated by the in-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) method and heat-treated within a temperature range of $650^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$. As the heat-treatment temperature increased, it seemed that the lattice distortion was increased by a more active C substitution into the boron sites from the malic acid addition. These increased electron scattering defects seemed to enhance the $J_c-H$ properties in spite of an improvement in the crystallinity, such as a decrease of the FWHM value and an increase of the $T_c$. Compared to the un-doped wire heat-treated at $650^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, the $J_c$ was enhanced by the C doping in a high-field regime. The wire heat-treated at $900^{\circ}C$ resulted in a higher magnetic $J_c$ of approximately $10^4\;A/cm^2$ at 5 K and 8 T.

  • The effects of nano $Fe_xC$ addition to superconducting properties of $in$ $situ$ processed $MgB_2$ superconductors was examined. 0.1 wt.% and 1 wt.% nano $Fe_xC$ powders were mixed with boron and magnesium powders by ball milling. The powder mixtures were made into pellets by uniaxial pressing. The pellets were heat-treated at $700^{\circ}C-900^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere for $MgB_2$ formation. It was found by powder X-ray diffraction that the raw powders were completely converted into $MgB_2$ after the heat treatment. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) and critical current density ($J_c$), estimated from susceptibility-temperature and $M-H$ curves, were decreased by nano $Fe_xC$ addition. The $T_c$ and $J_c$ decrease by nano $Fe_xC$ addition are attributed to the incorporation of iron and carbon with $MgB_2$ lattices (Fe substitution for Mg and C substitution for B) due to the high reactivity of the nano $Fe_xC$ powder.
