While non-predefined object segmentation (NDOS) distinguishes an arbitrary self-assumed object from its background, predefined object segmentation (DOS) pre-specifies the target object. In this paper, a new and novel method to segment predefined objects is presented, by globally optimizing an orientation-based objective function that measures the fitness of the object boundary, in a discretized parameter space. A specific object is explicitly described by normalized discrete sets of boundary points and corresponding normal vectors with respect to its plane shape. The orientation factor provides robust distinctness for target objects. By considering the order of transformation elements, and their dependency on the derived over-segmentation outcome, the domain of translations and scales is efficiently discretized. A branch and bound algorithm is used to determine the transformation parameters of a shape model corresponding to a target object in an image. The results tested on the PASCAL dataset show a considerable achievement in solving complex backgrounds and unclear boundary images.
Austenitic stainless steels such as AISI 316L have been used in equipment in which fluid flows at high speeds which can induce cavitation erosion on metallic surfaces due to the collapse of cavities, where the collapse is caused by the sudden change of local pressure within the liquid. Usually AISI 316L is susceptible to cavitation erosion. This research focuses on developing a better material to replace the AISI 316L used in equipment with high speed fluid flow, such as impellers. The effects of Rare Earth Metal (REM) additions on the cavitation erosion-corrosion resistance of duplex stainless steels were studied using metallographic examination, the potentiodynamic anodic polarization test, the tensile test, the X-ray diffraction test and the ultrasonic cavitation erosion test. The experimental alloys were found to have superior mechanical properties due to interstitial solid solution strengthening, by adding high nitrogen (0,4%), as well as by the refinement of phases and grains induced by fine REM oxides and oxy-sulfides. Corrosion resistance decreases in a gentle gradient as the REM content increases. However, REM containing alloys show superior corrosion resistance compared with that of other commercial alloys (SAF 2507, AISI 316L). Owing to their excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, the alloys containing REM have high cavitation erosion-corrosion resistance.

The finite volume method for forging simulation is examined to reveal its possibility as well as its problem in this paper. For this study, the finite volume method based MSC/SuperForge and the finite element method based AFDEX are employed. The simulated results of the homogeneous compression obtained by the two softwares are compared to indicate the problems of the finite volume method while several application examples are given to show the possibility of the finite volume method fur simulation of complex hot forging processes. It is shown that the finite volume method can not predict the exact solution of the homogeneous compression especially in terms of forming load and deformed shape but that it is helpful to simulate very complex forging processes which can hardly be simulated by the conventional finite element method.

As the industrial development is accelerated, a new machining process and system are keenly required to achieve super precision surface finish. Especially to get ground surface finish fer complicated and narrow inner shape of molds, it is impossible with the existing methods so that a new method is being required to be developed. A new material, called Magic(MAGnetic Intelligent Compounds), is finally made and it is called Magic machining that uses this material. There is a way to make a material as follows, the mixture of magnetic particles, bonding material and particles of abrasive grain should be melt down by proper heat, and then this mixture put in a mold and cool down in magnetic field which has a uniform direction. This new polishing method is spotlighted as an excellent solution to the existing problems. However it hasn't reported any study about the influence of the machining conditions of polishing velocity, amplitude and polishing pressure to the surface roughness yet. This study would examine closely the influence of polishing conditions of the Magic polishing tool to the surface finish to decide the optimum polishing condition and to standardize the Magic polishing work.

Governing equations and numerical solution methods are derived for the analysis of a combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal used in high performance steam turbines. A bulk flow is assumed for each combination-type-staggered-labyrinth cavity. Axial flow through a throttling labyrinth strip is determined by Neumann's leakage equation and circumferential flow is assumed to be completely turbulent in the labyrinth cavity. Moody's wall-friction-factor formula is used for the calculation of wall shear stresses. For the reaction force developed by the seal, linearized zeroth-order and first-order perturbation equations are developed for small motion near the centered position. Integration of the resultant first-order pressure distribution along and around the seal defines the rotordynamic coefficients of the combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal. Theoretical results of leakage and rotordynamic characteristics for the IP4-stage seal of USC (ultra super critical) steam turbine are shown with the effect of sump pressure, the number of throttling labyrinth strip, and rotor speed.

A lot of parts in FGD (Flue Gas Desulphurization) systems of fossil-fuel power plants show the environments in which are highly changeable and extremely acidic corrosive medium according to time and locations, e.g. in duct works, coolers and re-heaters etc.. These conditions are formed when system materials are immersed in fluid that flows on them or when exhausted gas is condensed into thin layered medium to contact materials of the system walls and roofs. The environments make troublesome corrosion and air pollution problems that are occurred from the leakage of the condensed solution. The frequent shut-down and repairing works of FGD systems also demand costs and low efficiencies of those facilities. In general, high corrosion resistant materials have been used to solve this problem. However, even the super alloys and Teflon linings sometimes have not been good enough to preventing corrosion. Further more, they are expensive and not easily repairable in short periods of operation stops. In this work, new technology that is effective, economical and easily repairable has proposed to solve the corrosion problems in FGD facilities. This technology contains cathodic protection, coatings and remote monitoring-controlling systems.
Magnetospheic substorm in the magnetotail region is studied numerically by means of a three dimensional MHD code. The analytic solution for the quiet magnetotail is employed as an initial configuration. The localized solar wind is modeled to enter the simulation domain through the boundaries located in the magnetotail lobe region. As a result of the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetosphere, the magnetic field lines are stretched, and the plasma sheet becomes thinner and thinner. When the current driven resistivity is generated, magnetic reconnection is triggered by this resistivity. The resulting plasma jetting is found to be super-magnetosonic. Although the plasmoid formation and its tailward motion is not quite clear as in the two dimensional simulation, which is mainly because of the numerical model chosen for the present simulation, the rarification of the plasmas near the x-point is observed. Field aligned currents are observed in the late expansive stage of the magnetospheric substorm. These field aligned currents flow from the tail toward the ionosphere on the dawn side from the ionosphere to ward the tail on the dusk side, namely in the same sense of the region 1 current. As the field aligned currents develop, it is found that the cross tail current in the earth side midnight section of the magnetic x-point is reduced.

This paper proposed a regularized iterative image restoration by using method of conjugate gradient. Compared with conventional iterative methods, method of conjugate gradient has a merit to converte toward a solution as a super-linear convergence speed. But because of those properties, there are several artifacts like ringing effects and the partial magnification of the noise in the course of restoring the images that are degraded by a defocusing blur and additive noise. So, we proposed the regularized method of conjugate gradient applying constraints. By applying the projectiong constraint and regularization parameter into that method, it is possible to suppress the magnification of the additive noise. As a experimental results, we showed the superior convergence ratio of the proposed mehtod compared with conventional iterative regularized methods.
An optimized multilayer superlens is designed, using a rigorous and efficient approach based on the method of moments (MoM) in conjunction with a simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. For the MoM solution, fast evaluation of closed-form Green's functions (GFs) in the spatial domain is performed by applying the complex-image (CI) technique, which obviates the time-consuming numerical evaluation of Sommerfeld integrals. The imaging capability of the superlens is examined with the correlation coefficient; results show that using circular polarization for the incident wave can improve this coefficient. To validate the proposed method, finite-element-based simulations are exploited, which reveal the method's accuracy and computational efficiency. Simulation results indicate that the designed structure is capable of producing two-dimensional sub-diffraction-limited images in the visible range, which may make it more versatile for practical applications. Finally, as a considerable finding, it is demonstrated for the proposed design that using circularly polarized illumination provides improved super-resolving performance, compared to linearly polarized illumination.

A new method for the graft polymerization of acrylonitrile onto starch is presented. Graft polymerization of acrylonitrile onto starch and the subsequent hydrolysis in sodium hydroxide solution to prepare absorbents is well known. This process has been utilized to produce the commercial product, Super Slurper. In a typical batch process, ~5% starch in water mixture is gelatinized at $95^{\circ}C$ under stirring for 1 hour then cooled to room temperature. The graft polymerization itself is carried out for approximately 2 hours at $25~30^{\circ}C$ on the gelatinized starch by eerie ion initiation. In this study, graft polymerization of acrylonitrile onto starch via a reactive extrusion process which is a continuous, efficient process is described. Initial concentration of starch in water is 35% and the reaction temperatures are between $50~80^{\circ}C$. However, the most significant difference in the reactive extrusion process is the short time in which the graft polymerization takes place. Preliminary results on the properties of graft polymerization products obtained from the reactive extrusion process are compared to those obtained from the batch process as well as the absorbency of the hydrolyzed samples. Absorbent material has also been prepared by sequential grafting and saponification in the extruder followed by a 2 hour heat treatment of the extrudate in an air circulated oven at $100^{\circ}C$.
