In these days numerous super tall buildings are under construction or being planned in Middle East and Asian countries. Some of them are planned as an ultra high-rise building that goes over 600m tall, including Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. External environment such as wind speed, temperature and humidity of the super tall building varies due to its vertical height. Therefore, it is necessary to consider these environmental changes to estimate building heating and cooling load. This paper analyzes how vertical microclimate difference affects building heating and cooling load in super tall building by simulation using radiosonde climate data. Besides, the correlation between air-tightness of building envelope and building load was analyzed for a super tall building.
Turbo- or Super-charging has been used to boost engine power for Gasoline- and Diesel Engine since beginning of 20th century. So far turbo-charger has enjoyed a high reputation in the charging field for its technical advantages such as no demand of operation power from engine and an excellent charging effect in a static operation at mid- and high engine speed. A mechanically driven super-charger, however, is now popular due to the high engine power at quick change of the driving mode - high engine torque even at low engine speed. Since super-charger needs operation power from engine, it is difficult to improve its relatively higher fuel consumption than that of turbo-charger. This negative point is still an obstacle to the wide use of supercharger. Super-charger using screw-type compressor will fulfill the purpose to reduce fuel consumption by minimizing operation power owing to no charge at idling or part load driving condition. This study aims to develop power control concept to achieve the minimization of operation power. A screw type super-charger was modified in design partially and installed with an internal bypass valve and a bypass tube to control charging pressure at part load. The various control concepts show a possibility to reduce operation power of super-charger.
Today, the number of super tall buildings are under construction or being planed in Middle East and Asian Countries. For example the burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, is completed in 2008 and the height of that is about 800m. Also, Lotte World Tower is under construction in Korea. External environmental conditions such as wind speed, air temperature, humidity and solar radiation around the super tall building differs according to the building height due to the vertical micro climate change. However, the meteorological information used for AC design of building is obtained typically from standard surface meterological station data(~2m above the ground). In this paper the effect of the building envelope on heating and cooling load in super tall building considering the meteorological changes with height was analyzed with simulation method. As results of this research, the guideline to select the building envelop alternatives for super tall building will be suggested in this paper.
Modern super-tall buildings are more sensitive to strong winds. The evaluation of wind loads for the design of these buildings is of primary importance. A direct monitoring of wind forces acting on super-tall structures is quite difficult to be realized. Indirect measurements interpreted by inverse techniques are therefore favourable since dynamic response measurements are easier to be carried out. To this end, a Kalman filtering based inverse approach is developed in this study so as to estimate the wind loads on super-tall buildings based on limited structural responses. The optimum solution of Kalman filter gain by solving the Riccati equation is used to update the identification accuracy of external loads. The feasibility of the developed estimation method is investigated through the wind tunnel test of a typical super-tall building by using a Synchronous Multi-Pressure Scanning System. The effects of crucial factors such as the type of wind-induced response, the covariance matrix of noise, errors of structural modal parameters and levels of noise involved in the measurements on the wind load estimations are examined through detailed parametric study. The effects of the number of vibration modes on the identification quality are studied and discussed in detail. The made observations indicate that the proposed inverse approach is an effective tool for predicting the wind loads on super-tall buildings.
Boosting of engine power by using Turbo- or Super-charger is a solution to comply with $CO_2$-regulation in Europe. Turbo-charger is now playing a major role in the field of charging system thank to its technical advantages such as no demand of operation power from engine. A mechanically driven Super-charger, however, is now popular due to quick speed response to change of the driving mode-high engine torque even at low engine speed. Since Super-charger needs operation power from engine, it is difficult to improve its relatively higher fuel consumption than that of Turbo-charger. This negative point is still an obstacle to the wide use of Super-charger. This study aims to develop power control concept to achieve the minimization of operation power when it is not necessary to charge at idling or part load driving condition. A screw type Super-charger was modified in design partially and adapted an internal bypass valve and a bypass tube to control charging pressure at part load. The various control concepts show a possibility to reduce operation power of Super-charger and result in improvement of fuel consumption.
The ASHRAE Technical Committee for Tall Buildings, TC 9.12, has defined a tall building as one whose height is greater than 300 feet (91m). Since the publication of the HVAC Design Guide for Tall Commercial Buildings in 2004, there were only about 300 buildings taller than 200 meters; this number has risen to 600 in 2010 and the prediction 765 buildings taller than 200 meters in 2012. There has also been an introduction of two new classes of tall buildings: ${\bullet}$ Mega tall, which are buildings taller than 300 m, and ${\bullet}$ Super tall, which are buildings taller than 600 m. The effect of ambient air temperature over the height of buildings, especially Mega tall and Super tall buildings. The ambient climatic conditions vary with altitude and these changes in ambient conditions can seriously affect load calculations and performance of super and mega tall buildings. This paper presents revised calculations for stack effect for Tall, Mega Tall and Super tall Buildings.
This paper describes the possibility of the raft thickness reduction for mega foundations system of super high-rise buildings through a case study on domestic and foreign super high-rise buildings. In case of super high-rise buildings, the size of foundations, especially raft becomes wider and deeper because of heavy upper load. It is difficult to pour concrete of this kind of mega foundation, and cracks by hydration heat could happen. Therefore, there are several ways to reduce the raft thickness of mega foundations. Piled-raft could be the one because moment and shear load that the raft subjects on by soil reaction are lower. The effect of the piled-raft foundation on the raft thickness reduction could be confirmed by comparison of super high-rise buildings with pile, piled-raft and mat foundation. Furthermore, it was showed that the raft thickness could be more reduced by locating piles right under the vertical members of super structures.
This paper is a study of recovery under load process of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). SFCL consists of five parallel-connected high-temperature superconductor (HTS) tapes additionally stabilized by stainless tape. Previously, HTS was heated by current pulse to simulate a short circuit in a power grid. During the cooling period, the current amplitude decreased to 23% or less of HTS critical current value, which is the simulation of network re-switching. When HTS with a polymer coating is cooled, temperature gradient on thermal insulation layer occurs, that prevents a boiling crisis and improves the heat sink into liquid nitrogen. Two samples are coated with a 30 ㎛ and 50 ㎛ polylactide (PLA) layers, reference sample has no polymer coating on it. Samples with a polymer coating show 3-5 times faster cooling than the reference one.
Apartment Housing has been increasing steadily, particularly our current super high-rise apartment houses that represent the culture has become a trend in Korea. These super high-rise apartment houses' curtain wall system increases heating and cooling loads, it is expected to vary by each unit's thermal properties. In this study, measured indoor environment and energy simulation results were compared to actual energy consumption. As a result, the various factors that affect heating and cooling loads, such as direction, plan type and glazing area, influence each unit's load characteristic. In particular, according to the electricity costs savings behavior, the occupant's thermal discomfort is expected to be large in summer. Therefore, to reduce heating and cooling load for each unit requires a reasonable plan.
Fall-arrest system have been widely applied to provide a safe stop during fall incidents for occupational activities. This research object to evaluate the energy capacity of fall arrest shock energy absorber lanyard in relation to the used super fiber. In this work, shock energy absorber lanyard was prepared using high tenacity PET, high tenacity PET/P-aramid and high tenacity PET/UHMWPE, respectively. Dynamic load and static load tests based on the Korea fall protection equipment standard(Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency standard 2013-13) were conducted. Maximum arrest force by dynamic load test of shock energy absorber showed below 6,000N. Also, static strength by static load test of lanyard and rope remains 15,000N and 22,000N for 1 min.
