  • The apartment buildings now covers more than 50% of the total residential types in Korea and the urban residential area becomes increasingly congested with newly constructed high-rise apartment buildings. Judicial precedents require, for securing the solar rights in the residential area, that the consecutive sunshine duration should be at least two hours from 9:00 to 15:00 or the accumulative sunshine duration should be at least four hours from 8:00 to 16:00 as of the winter solstice. Disputes are increasing, however, on infringed solar rights and view rights for the neighboring structures as cases occur where the requirement cannot be satisfied in congested residential areas. The sunshine duration scan be assessed by measuring it on the site of the dispute, but it is impracticable to actually measure it for every case on the winter solstice, only one day out of the whole year. At a trial, therefore, 3D computer simulation is used to calculate the sunshine duration and determine the extent of infringement for submission of the evaluation to be used as the basis of the judgment. The simulation, however, may have an error in its result up to the program characteristics and the accuracy of the input data such as the structure shape and height, the distance between structures, and the ground level. This study, therefore, used a self-developed VIEW program with Autodesk VIZ 2006 to provide a simulation method for solar access evaluation, and verified its efficacy by comparing the results with the actual measurements.

  • It is necessary to estimate the regression coefficients in order to predict the daily global radiation on a horizontal surface. Therefore many different equations have proposed to evaluate them for certain areas. In this work a new correlation has been made to predict the solar radiation for 16 different areas over Korea by estimating the regression coefficients taking into account cloud hours of bright sunshine. Particularly, the multiple linear regression model proposed shows reliable results for estimating the global radiation on a horizontal surface with monthly average deviation of-0.26 to +0.53% and each station annual average deviation of -1.61 to +1.7% from measured values.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the effect of climatic factors on fruit growth in 'Niitaka' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia). For ten years from 2000 to 2010, average full bloom date was April 19th and standard deviation was 4.2 days. Average fruit diameter 160 days after full bloom (DAFB) was 102.4 mm and standard deviation was 7.5 mm. Variance coefficients among climatic factors were higher in rainfall amount and sunshine hours than temperature. Only sunshine hours of climatic factors accumulated during the 160 DAFB had significant positive relationship ($r=0.68^*$) with fruit diameter 160 DAFB. Between full bloom date and fruit diameter 160 DAFB had no significant relationship. Fruit growth in 2004, as continuous rain fall and short sunshine hours, showed opposite pattern compared to that in 2009. Therefore, fruit growth of 'Niitaka' pear was more influenced by the accumulated sunshine hours than accumulated temperature.

  • This study investigated the antioxidant and yield properties of eight adzuki bean (Vigna angularis L.) cultivars grown under different mean temperatures and sunshine hours in 2020 and 2021. Compared to 2021, which had a normal mean temperature, 2020 showed a lower mean temperature during the pod-extension and grain-filling periods. In addition, due to frequent rainfall during the vegetative period in 2020, there were fewer hours of sunshine in 2020 than in 2021. The adzuki bean yield was approximately 13% lower in 2020 than in 2021 due to the decreased number of pods per plant and 100-seeds weight. 'Hongda' and 'Hongjin' cultivars showed more stable yields than the 'Arari' variety, which is the most commonly cultivated variety in Korea. Moreover, the 'Hongda' and 'Hongjin' cultivars had higher yields than the 'Arari' variety in both years. Compared to 2021, in 2020, when the weather conditions were unfavorable, both antioxidant levels and activity were higher. 'Hongda' had higher antioxidant levels and activity than the other cultivars over the 2 years. These results suggest that the antioxidant levels and activity were good in 2020, with an approximately 13% decrease in yield compared to 2021, which was a normal year with respect to mean temperature and sunshine hours.

  • Relationship between grain quality-related traits and daily mean temperature/sunshine hours during grain filling stage was analyzed using eleven high quality rice varieties at 24 experimental sites through eight provinces of Korea in 2013~2014. In the data set pooled across varieties, experimental sites and years, grain quality-related traits such as percentage of head rice (PHR), head rice yield (HRY), protein in milled rice (PRO) and Toyo Mido Meter glossiness value (TGV) were higher at the temperature lower than $22.6^{\circ}C$ for 40 days after flowering (DAF), which was optimum for percentage of grain filling in this study. Optimum sunshine hours for 40 DAF were $6.0{\sim}6.1\;hr\;d^{-1}$when considered PHR, HRY and TGV. PRO was associated with daily mean temperature and sunshine hours for 40 DAF in more varieties than the other traits. PRO was closely correlated with daily mean temperature during early filling stage and sunshine hours during early to mid filling stage, compared to other stages during grain filling. It is concluded that general trend in the variation of grain quality-related traits could be explained by the changes in daily mean temperature and sunshine hours during grain filling. In addition, climate conditions during early grain filling stage played important roles to enhance grain quality.

  • Two types of sunshine recorders, Jordan and bimetal, were used for measuring the duration of sunshine and percentage of sunshine in Weather Forecast Offices(WFO) and Weather Observation Stations(WOS) in Korea, respectively. These two gauges showed different values in each element observation. To evaluate the solar energy resources by duration and percentage of sunshine, relevant parameter should be adapted to use the two kinds of data for zoning of agricultural climatic area and comparison of regional solar energy distributions. In this respect, the correlation and distribution pattern were found by analyzing data from the two types of sunshine recorders. The results were as follows. The monthly duration of sunshine by the Jordan type was $50{\sim}60$ hours lower than the bimetal type and its value in May was the highest in a year. The percentage of sunshine by the Jordan type was $5{\sim}10%$ lower than the bimetal type. The seasonal difference of sunshine hour data by two types of sunshine recorder became small in winter but large in summer. Standard deviation of monthly duration of sunshine of WFO and WOS was $11{\sim}32$ and $17{\sim}25$ hours and percentage of sunshine was $3{\sim}11$ and $4{\sim}9$ % respectively. The range of deviation in WOS data was smaller than WFO. The highest distribution of duration and percentage of sunshine was in the Southern Coastal Area, whereas the lowest in the Central North Western Area.

  • To find out the relationship between duration of sunshine and mean air temperature, monthly climatic data were analyzed in several locations in Korea. Even though mean air temperature was high in summer, duration of sunshine was shorter than winter in Kangneung. Net radiation showed a positive correlation with duration of sunshine and its regression coefficient was the highest in July. An increasing rate of sensible heat flux according to the increment of sunshine hours was significantly high in April and October, but was low in July. In spring and fall, duration of sunshine was positively correlated with the daily temperature difference, but in summer and winter it was negatively correlated with maximum temperature and with the minimum temperature, respectively. In January, one hour increase in sunshine hour lowered the mean air temperature by 1 to $1.7^{\circ}C$.

  • To understand the effects of marine environmental and meteorological parameters on laver Porphyra yezoensis production at Nakdong River Estuary, we analyzed marine environmental (water temperature, salinity, nutrients, etc.) and meteorological properties (air temperature, wind speed, precipitation, sunshine hours) with yearly and monthly variations in laver production over 10 years (2003-2013). Air and water temperature, wind speed, sunshine hours and precipitation were major factors affecting yearly variability in laver production at the Nakdong River Estuary. Lower air and water temperatures together with higher levels of nutrients and sunshine and stronger wind speeds resulted in higher laver harvests. Salinity and nitrogen did not show clear correlations with laver production, mainly due to the plentiful supply of nitrogen from river discharge and the low frequency of environmental measurements, which resulted in low statistical confidence. However, environmental factors affecting monthly laver production were related to the life cycle (culturing stage) of Porphyra yezoensis and were somewhat different from factors affecting annual laver production. In November, a young laver needs lower water temperatures for rapid growth, while a mature laver needs much stronger winds and more sunshine, as well as lower temperatures for massive production and effective photosynthesis, mostly in December and January. However, in spring (March), more stable environments with fewer fluctuations in air temperature are needed to sustain the production of newly deployed culture-nets ($2^{nd}$ time culture). These results indicate that rapid changes in weather and marine environments caused by global climate change will negatively affect laver production and, thus, to sustain the yield of and predict future variability in laver production at the Nakdong River estuary, environmental variation around laver culturing farms needs to be monitored with high resolution in space and time.

  • It is studied on the relationship between the occurrence of red tide(Chlorophyll-a concentration by the in-situ and satellite data) and the meteorological factors (precipitation, air temperature, sunshine and winds) in the coastal areas in the South Sea of Korea. In summer and early-fall which frequently occurred the red tide, the precipitation above 213mm had directly influence on the occurrence of red tide because it carried the nutritive substance which originated from the land into the coastal areas. Then air temperature kept up generally high values as 23~26$^{\circ}C$, and sunshine with 187~198hours and wind velocity with 3.1~7.9m/s showed not directly the relationship on the occurrence of red tide.
