Characteristics and Geoeffectiveness of Small-scale Magnetic Flux Ropes in the Solar Wind

  • Magnetic flux ropes, often observed during intervals of interplanetary coronal mass ejections, have long been recognized to be critical in space weather. In this work, we focus on magnetic flux rope structure but on a much smaller scale, and not necessarily related to interplanetary coronal mass ejections. Using near-Earth solar wind advanced composition explorer (ACE) observations from 1998 to 2016, we identified a total of 309 small-scale magnetic flux ropes (SMFRs). We compared the characteristics of identified SMFR events with those of normal magnetic cloud (MC) events available from the existing literature. First, most of the MCs and SMFRs have similar values of accompanying solar wind speed and proton densities. However, the average magnetic field intensity of SMFRs is weaker (~7.4 nT) than that of MCs (~10.6 nT). Also, the average duration time and expansion speed of SMFRs are ~2.5 hr and 2.6 km/s, respectively, both of which are smaller by a factor of ~10 than those of MCs. In addition, we examined the geoeffectiveness of SMFR events by checking their correlation with magnetic storms and substorms. Based on the criteria Sym-H < -50 nT (for identification of storm occurrence) and AL < -200 nT (for identification of substorm occurrence), we found that for 88 SMFR events (corresponding to 28.5 % of the total SMFR events), substorms occurred after the impact of SMFRs, implying a possible triggering of substorms by SMFRs. In contrast, we found only two SMFRs that triggered storms. We emphasize that, based on a much larger database than used in previous studies, all these previously known features are now firmly confirmed by the current work. Accordingly, the results emphasize the significance of SMFRs from the viewpoint of possible triggering of substorms.

  • As an activity of building Korean Space Weather Prediction Center (KSWPC), we has studied of radiation effect on the spacecraft components. High energy charged particles trapped by geomagnetic field in the region named Van Allen Belt can move to low altitude along magnetic field and threaten even low altitude spacecraft. Space Radiation can cause equipment failures and on occasions can even destroy operations of satellites in orbit. Sun sensors aboard Science and Technology Satellite (STSAT-1) was designed to detect sun light with silicon solar cells which performance was degraded during satellite operation. In this study, we try to identify which particle contribute to the solar cell degradation with ground based radiation facilities. We measured the short circuit current after bombarding electrons and protons on the solar cells same as STSAT-1 sun sensors. Also we estimated particle flux on the STSAT-1 orbit with analyzing NOAA POES particle data. Our result clearly shows STSAT-1 solar cell degradation was caused by energetic protons which energy is about 700 keV to 1.5 MeV. Our result can be applied to estimate solar cell conditions of other satellites.

Effect of a 20 kHz Sawtooth Magnetic Field Exposure on the Estrous Cycle in Mice

  • Abstract Female mice post weaning were exposed to 20 kHz sawtooth electric and magnetic fields (EMF) with $6.25{\mu}T$ peak intensity for 6 weeks. Estrous cycles were checked using vaginal smears over the last 10 days of the experimental period. The vaginal smears from EMF-exposed mice revealed an increase in the frequency of one or two phases persisting. The number of estrous cycles less than 1 was more in the EMF-exposed group than in the sham control group. Furthermore, in the EMF-exposed group, the duration of proestrous and metestrous stages of the estrous cycle was significantly increased compared with the control group. In conclusion, our results suggest that exposure to 20 kHz sawtooth EMF may affect normal cycling of the estrous cycle by disrupting the female reproductive endocrine physiology. We should not disregard the possible adverse reproductive effect of the 20 kHz sawtooth EMF generated under the occupational exposure situation in females.

  • Recently, the resource investigation has got much attention. The optimization of the resource investigation method and its automation are one of the most important keys for it. We propose the resource investigation emulating robot to overcome the conventional method; a numerical modeling. A nobel cable car robot system is developed. It minimizes the magnetic noise and comes true the gradient emulating of the field. This advanced system enables the optimization and automation of the resource investigation.

  • Magnetoelectric (ME) effects for lanthanum modified $BiFeO_3-PbTiO_3\;(BE-_xPT)$ solid solutions have been investigated. The value of magnetoelectric polarization coefficient, up is 10 times greater than that of $Cr_2O_3$. The results also show that up is due to a linear coupling between polarization and magnetization, and that up is independent of do magnetic bias and ac magnetic field. The ME effect is believed to be significantly enhanced due to breaking of the cycloidal spin state of a long-period spiral spin structure, via randomly distributed charged imperfections.

A small-scale H-alpha eruption in the north polar limb of the Sun observed by New Solar Telescope

  • The New Solar Telescope (NST) at Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) is the recently constructed world largest 1.6 m optical solar telescope on the ground. We took an observation of the north polar limb in H-alpha line center wavelength on 2009 August 26 with the instrument at Nasmyth focus of the NST and found a remarkable small-scale H-alpha eruption from 18:20 UT and 18:45 UT. The eruption occurred with a relatively slow speed of about 10 km/s in early stage and a slight acceleration up to 20-30 km/s in later stage. We also found that the eruption shows a deflection along the pre-existing magnetic field as well as several interesting features such as bifurcation, rotation, horizontal oscillation, and direction and thickness change of its structure during the eruption. In this talk, we will report the observational properties of the small-scale eruption observed by the NST and discuss their implication on magnetic reconnection.

A Solar Cyclone with Chromospheric Running Wave

  • An innovative solar observing satellite, Hinode, has successfully observed the detailed evolution of a rapidly developing emerging flux region from the beginning of its appearance at the solar surface. The high spatial and temporal resolution provided by the satellite enables to capture the prominent dynamic processes such as the rotational motion of a polarity region with intense magnetic flux which is reminiscent of a cyclone on the Earth, and a running wave that spreads ahead of this rotating polarity region. This 'solar cyclone' is, on the other hand, generated differently from terrestrial cyclones, and a possible generating mechanism for it is demonstrated with a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a twisted magnetic flux tube emerging from the solar interior into the solar atmosphere. The simulation shows that the rotational motion is caused by a strong downflow of plasma along the twisted field lines that form a helical pillar standing upright on the Sun.

  • The Sun-Earth Lagrange point L4 is considered as one of the unique places where the solar activity and heliospheric environment can be observed in a continuous and comprehensive manner. The L4 mission affords a clear and wide-angle view of the Sun-Earth line for the study of the Sun-Earth and Sun-Moon connections from he perspective of remote-sensing observations. In-situ measurements of the solar radiation, solar wind, and heliospheric magnetic field are critical components necessary for monitoring and forecasting the radiation environment as it relates to the issue of safe human exploration of the Moon and Mars. A dust detector on the ram side of the spacecraft allows for an unprecedented detection of local dust and its interactions with the heliosphere. The purpose of the present paper is to emphasize the importance of L4 observations as well as to outline a strategy for the planned L4 mission with remote and in-situ payloads onboard a Korean spacecraft. It is expected that the Korean L4 mission can significantly contribute to improving the space weather forecasting capability by enhancing the understanding of heliosphere through comprehensive and coordinated observations of the heliosphere at multi-points with other existing or planned L1 and L5 missions.

Study on the Interanal Physical Changes of Kiwi Fruit Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technique (자기공명영상 기술을 이용한 저장 중 키위의 내부 변화 연구)

  • 농산물 수확 이후 저장 유통 과정에서 일어나는 생리적 현상 변화에 따른 내부품질의 측정 분석연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 이 연구에서는 비파괴 측정 방법들 중 하나인 자기공명영상(Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI) 기술을 활용하여 후숙 과일인 키위의 저장 일수에 따른 형태 및 내부 구조의 변화를 조사하였다. 공시재료는 국내에서 판매되고 있는 키위들 중 3품종(뉴질랜드산 Sun Gold, 뉴질랜드산 Green, 칠레산 Jin Green)별로 균일한 크기의 과일 5개씩을 이용하였으며, 시료를 실험실내($16.6^{\circ}C$, 38% RH)에서 18~19 일간 보관하면서 3~5일 간격으로 5회 시험하였다. 전북대 농업과학기술연구소가 보유하고 있는 MRI(M10, Aspect Imaging, Israel)를 활용하여 영상 이미지를 얻었으며, 저장 기간에 따른 무게 감소는 전자저울(한성, HK-series)을 이용하였다. 자기공명영상 이미지는 Gradient-Eco 펄스열을 사용하였고, 횡단면(Axial)의 영상면(Image-direction)을 중심으로 영상영역(Field of View, FOV)은 $80mm{\times}80mm$로 1회 촬영 할 때 마다 30개의 영상들을 얻었다. 저장 기간이 길어질수록 내부 공동현상이 커지는 것으로 나타났고, 뉴질랜드산 Sun Gold 품종은 다른 두 품종보다 내부 공동이 빠르게 나타났다. 실험이 끝나는 날에는 껍질이 연화되어 타원형의 형체를 계속 유지하지 못하고 붕괴되는 이미지를 MRI를 통해서 관찰 할 수 있었다. 시간이 지남에 따라 영상들의 위치가 일정하지 않고 일부 회전을 한 것처럼 나타났다. 이는 키위 전용 홀더를 만들어 고정하지 않고 측정하다보니 생긴 오차로 생각 되었다. 키위를 건조한 공간에 오래 보관하였기 때문에 시간이 지남에 따라 수분증발과 연화된 껍질 사이로 과육이 흘러 일부를 제외한 대부분의 키위 무게가 일정하게 감소하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

FEM Analysis of Conduction Noise Absorbers in Microstrip Line (마이크로스트립 라인에서 유한요소법을 이용한 전도노이즈 흡수체의 성능해석)

  • Conduction noise attenuation by composite sheets of high magnetic and dielectric loss has been analyzed by using electromagnetic field simulator which employs finite element method. The simulation model consists of microstrip line with planar input/output ports and noise absorbers (magnetic composite sheets containing iron flake particles as absorbent fillers). Reflection and transmission parameters $(S_{11}\;and\;S_{21})$ and power loss are calculated as a function of frequency with variation of sheet size and thickness. The simulated value is in good agreement with measured one and it is demonstrated that the proposed simulation technique can be effectively used in the design and characterization of noise absorbing materials in the RF transmission lines.
