Growth, Vitamin C, and Mineral Contents of Sedum sarmentosum in Soil and Hydroponic Cultivation (토경 및 수경재배에서 돌나물의 생육, 비타민 C와 무기성분 함량 변이)

  • The growth, yield and quality of Sedum sarmentosum between soil and hydroponic cultivation were compared to produce high-quality shoots in summer season. The plants were collected from four places in Korea and cultivated in a plastic film house with 50% shading. A 1:1:1 mixtures of sand, upland soil and substrate (N-P-K: 330-220-400 $mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$) was used for soil cultivation, and a nutrient film technique (NFT) with Yamazaki-lettuce nutrient solution used for hydroponics. After 30 days of cultivation, plant height ranged from 18.4 to 21.8 cm and showed no significant difference between soil and hydroponic cultivation. Number of shoot, leaf length, leaf width, number of leaf, fresh weight, and dry weight significantly increased in hydroponics compared to those in soil cultivation. Fresh and dry weights in hydroponics were greater in 'Gunsan' and 'Wando' collections than those in other collections. Stem diameter and compression-force significantly increased in soil cultivation rather than hydroponics with significant differences among collections. However there were no significant differences in shoot bitterness and vitamin C content between cultivation methods or among the collections. Most mineral contents except Fe in hydroponics were higher than those in soil cultivation. K, Na, Zn contents in hydroponics were over 2 times higher than those in soil cultivation.

Selection of Suitable Cultivars for the Hydroponics of Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in the Alpine Area in Summer (착색단고추 고랭지 하계 수경재배용 품종 선발)

  • This experiment was investigated to select suitable cultivars for the hydroponics of sweet pepper in the alpine area in summer. Sweet pepper plants were grown in the greenhouse in Jinbu (550m above sea level), Pyungchang, Korea. Seeding and transplanting of the 12 sweet pepper cultivars were done in February and April, respectively. The sweet pepper fruits were harvested every week from July to November. Seven cultivars were chosen from the 12 tested cultivars. 'Special' and 'Cupra' for red, 'Boogie', 'Fellini' and 'President' for orange, and 'Fiesta' and 'Derby' for yellow had more fruit sets, the more percentage of standardized products for the export to Japan, and higher yield than the other cultivars. This result has shown various characteristics among or within the cultivars. This study would provide the basic database of cultivars and give the information about control vegetative and reproductive growth to the farmers cultivating sweet pepper.

The Effect of Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa spp.) as a Pollinator on the Fruit Set Increment of Sweet Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) in Summer Hydroponics (착색단고추 고온기 호박벌 처리에 의한 착과증진 효과)

  • This experiment was executed to investigate the effect of the carpenter bee as a pollinator on the fruit set increment of sweet pepper in summer hydroponics in the alpine area of Gangwon province, Korea. Where the number of fruit sets were increasing during the treatment of pollination by the carpenter bee, total yields during the whole growing period were not different. The number of seeds per fruit in the treatment of the carpenter bee increased more than that in the control by 7.3 percent increment, but the percentage of blossom-end rot increased. As fruit weight range of SS size (below 120g) decreased and that of L size (from 181g to 210g) increased by the pollination treatment, so the percentage of standardized products for the export to Japan improved. Therefore this result was effective for the fruit production of high quality for the export to Japan and it will be necessary for further study on the method of reducing blossom-end rot to be done.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the appropriate hydroponic system when cherry tomatoes were grown in summer. The base diameter of the trunk, leaf length, leaf width, and the length of cluster were good in deep flow culture(DFC), and not different between NFT and rockwool culture. The first time of flowering and the fruit coloring per cluster were not different among cultural systems, but the marketable yields were good in DFC. In DFC, % dry weight, firmness, the content of organic acid and sugar were low, and the ratio of sugar/organic acid and vitamin C were high. So DFC is recommended for the summer cultivation of cherry tomatoes.

Bush Growth and Yield of Highbush Blueberry 'Duke' as Influenced by Different Pruning Times in Unheated Plastic House (블루베리 '듀크' 품종의 무가온 시설재배시 전정시기가 수체생장과 과실수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to compare effects of summer pruning at different times and dormant pruning on shoot growth and yield of northern highbush blueberry. Using 7 (2018) to 9 (2020) years old 'Duke' bushes grown in 180 L containers, summer pruning was treated on June 20 (around 30 days after harvest), July 20, and August 20 consecutively in both 2018 and 2019 removing 30% of the total woods, while dormant pruning (conventional) was on January 20 in both 2019 and 2020. Summer pruning reduced shoot growth the following year, especially when treated in late summer. Total shoot length per bush decreased to 47%, 37%, and 33% on October 15, 2020 in June, July, and August pruning, respectively, compared with that of dormant pruning. Summer pruning at different times in 2018 and 2019 did not affect berry characteristic in the following year. Yield per bush was not significantly changed in 2019, but it decreased by 21 to 38% in 2020 in the summer pruning treatments compared with 2.9 kg of the dormant pruning. It was concluded that consecutive summer pruning in 'Duke' under unheated plastic house could weaken the shoot growth with reducing yield.

Effect of Nutrient Solution Concentration on the Growth and Mineral Uptake of Various Wrap-up Vegetables and Herbs Grown with Mixed Planting in DFT Hydroponics (담액 수경재배 시 양액농도 처리가 혼식한 쌈 채소류와 허브류의 생육과 무기양분 흡수에 미치는 영향)

  • The twenty seven wrap-up vegetables (13 Compositae, 14 Brassicaceae) and seven herbs (6 Labiatae, 1 Umbelliferae) were cultivated with a deep flow technique (DFT) hydroponic beds and treated with 3 levels of nutrient solution concentrations of 1.2, 2.4, and $3.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in summer and autumn season. The pH and electrical conductivity (EC) change of nutrient solution, fresh weight, and mineral contents of plants were investigated. The pH was maintained lower in high electrical conductivity (EC) treatment and in summer than autumn. EC of nutrient solution in EC $3.6dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ treatment increased up to $4.8dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ during the growing period in summer season. The growth of tested plants showed high variations by plant species and nutrient solution concentrations. The coefficient variation (CV) of the shoot fresh weight of plants was higher in summer than autumn. The growth of Compostiae and herbs was better at EC $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, and 14 Brassicaceae was better at EC $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in summer. In autumn, the growth was better at EC $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in all plants except kale 'TBC F1' and red rape 'honchaetae'. In mineral contents, total nitrogen and potassium were higher in autumn than summer. Total nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium were higher in Brassicaceae than others. Iron and manganese, however, were higher in Compositae. As the results, this study suggests that mixed planting of 27 wrap-up vegetables and 7 herbs in DFT hydroponics in two seasons was possible and EC $1.2dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in summer and EC $2.4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ in autumn be recommended as for the nutrient solution concentration to produce them safely year round.
