Researches on unused energy are being continued because of the limited fossil fuel and the destruction of environment. Therefore this study was peformed as follows. The collectable amount of exhausted heat for an air-conditioning was calculated by the subway thermal environment prediction program. And the electric power needed by conventional heat source equipments was compared with one by unused heat source equipments when the exhausted heat was used by heat pump in heating and hot water supplying. The results are summarized as follows; 1) Forced ventilation should be conducted to keep optimal temperature in subway tunnel in summer as well as in winter. According to the simulation, temperature in tunnel was higher than that on the ground in summer when the forced ventilation was conducted only in winter. 2) Ventilating time should be calculated out to the optimal condition for not only saving power of ventilation fan but reusing exhausted heat. By the simulation, it is certain that the exhausted heat should be eliminated in air-conditioning time. 3) The use of exhausted heat source heat pump could save 8% of electric power per hour in comparison with existing heat pump. It was based on a present heat generation and traffic for ventilating time of general air-conditioning, but could be different by ventilating time. 4) As the traffic increases up to 1.5 or 2 times, electric power consumption of the conventional heat pump increases to 11% or 13.5% per mean hour in comparison with that of the exhausted heat source heat pump, though all-day ventilation.
Objective: This study is aimed at investigating indoor air quality on public transportation (subway, train, and bus) according to changes in season and time. Methods: We evaluated TVOC and HCHO on public transportation based on the un-controlled parameters of the Ministry of Environment. We also measured temperature and humidity since they affect the concentration of TVOC and HCHO. For public transportation classification, subway lines were classified into Lines 1 to 4. Additionally, trains were classified as ITX and KTX. Results: When comparing summer and winter on public transportation, the concentrations of TVOC and HCHO did not show any particular tendency. However, the concentrations of TVOC and HCHO during traffic congestion was higher than levels during times of non-congestion on most public transportation. In summer and winter, the measurement results for temperature and humidity showed a normal range, so temperature and humidity did not affect the concentrations of TVOC and HCHO. In the case of TVOC, TVOC concentrations on new trains were found to be relatively higher than on older ones, but there was no statistically correlation. Conclusions: A survey was conducted on the indoor air quality on public transportation. This study also analyzed data based on TVOC and HCHO for designing policies and managing indoor air quality.
Sea water samples collected in August, 1994 from 20 stations in the Kwangyang Bay were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-selected ion monitoring (GC/MS-SIM) to investigate persistence and distribution pattern of four organophosphorus pesticides (DDVP, Diazinon, IBP, EDDP). Except for IBP, the contamination by DDVP, Diazinon, and EDDP in marine aquatic environment in Korea has not been reported previously. In this study, however, all these four pesticides were detected in all stations (except DDVP) and their concentrations were in ng/L level. The concentrations ranged from detection limit to 15.3ng/L for DDVP, 1.8-27.7ng/L for Diazinon, 7.3-63.5ng/L for IBP, and 22.2-1100.1ng/L for EDDP. It is noteworthy that the measured concentrations of IBP and EDDP in this study would be much lower than usual, since the use of IBP and EDDP was less than 50% of average annual consumption due to unusually dry and hot weather condition in the summer of 1994. It was very surprising to find that the highest concentrations of organophosphorus pesticides were observed at stations near Daesa Streamlet instead of Seomjin River, which has more point source of the pesticides. This result suggests that the small river discharge during heavy ram period in summer can give harmful effect on marine biota (both wild and aqua-cultured) with its organophosphorus pesticide residue, despite of their short residence time in aquatic environment. In order to protect the marine life properly from acute toxicity of the organophosphorus pesticides, it needs to be emphasized that monitoring the level of agricultural pesticides in river run-off should be done during active consumption period rather at regular intervals.
Irrigation control plays an important role in improving productivity of paprika which is very sensitive to moisture condition. Among environmental factors, light intensity and distribution are not easily controlled and showed a big difference depending on season and region. For adequate irrigation control, therefore, transpiration and irrigation amounts considering light environmental data should be estimated. In current study, modified transpiration model was used for more precise estimation of transpiration. Seasonal transpiration and irrigation amounts at different regions were compared by using light environmental data provided from Korea Meteorological Administration. The transpiration amount in summer was rather smaller than those in spring and autumn seasons in Korea due to large deviations in light intensity as well as rainy period in summer. Irrigation system capacities at various regions could be recommended by using the transpiration amount in the spring having the longest photoperiod in the year. These results will be useful to the design of irrigation system and optimization of input energy in greenhouse.
Characteristics of water quantity and quality of the Anyangcheon were analyzed through many field measurements and the distributed hydrologic simulation model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Event mean concentrations (EMCs) and baseflow mean concentrations were calculated from the data and the daily runoff were simulated by SWAT. The runoff was divided into the direct runoff and the baseflow. Using those values and quantity and quality data of release from the wastewater treatment plant (WWPT), unit loads of BOD, COD, SS, $NO_2-N$, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, and Dis-P were derived. EMCs of BOD and SS were even higher than the baseflow mean concentrations. The total runoff from October to April (7 months) of 2004 was just 13.5%, since the rainfall usually is concentrated in summer season. Futhermore BOD and SS were loaded during the event by 50.9% and 70.9%, respectively and over three quarters of total COD, $NO_2-N$, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, and Dis-P were flowed into the Anyangcheon during the remaining period. Therefore, the efficiency of WWPT for COD, $NO_2-N$, $NO_3-N$, $NH_3-N$, and Dis-P should be intensified from Oct. to Apr. and the runoff quality management of BOD and SS should be planned during the summer season.

Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in $PM_{2.5}$ were measured with Sunset OC/EC Field Analyzer at Taehwa Research Forest (TRF) near Seoul metropolitan area from May 2013 to April 2014. During the study period, the mean concentrations of OC and EC were $5.0{\pm}3.2{\mu}gC/m^3$ and $1.7{\pm}1.0{\mu}gC/m^3$, respectively. They showed clear seasonality reaching their maximum in winter ($6.5{\mu}gC/m^3$ and $1.9{\mu}gC/m^3$) and minimum in wet summer ($2.5{\mu}gC/m^3$ and $1.4{\mu}gC/m^3$). While OC showed greater seasonal variation, the diurnal variation was more noticeable for EC through all seasons with a clear maximum in the morning, which reveals the influence of vehicle emissions. In contrast, OC exhibited a broad second peak in the afternoon during May~June, when biological activities were the highest. Using the morning peaks of EC and OC, primary OC/EC ratio was assessed, which was assumed to be anthropogenic origin. It was the greatest in winter followed by spring and the lowest in wet summer. The seasonal difference in primary OC/EC ratio implies the influence of non-local sources of OC at the Mt. Taehwa.

In Korea, there is only a limited amount of information currently available on the levels of airborne bacteria and fungi of cattle sheds, although certain portions of people are potentially exposed to these bioaerosols in cattle sheds. Accordingly, the current study measured them inside cattle sheds, inside and outside farmers' houses near the sheds, and/or inside residential houses far away from the sheds during winter, 2004 and summer, 2005. The airborne bacteria and fungi were detected in most samples in the cattle farmers' houses as well as in the cattle sheds. Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Penicillium, which have been associated with adverse health effects, were three most prevalent fungal genera, and they took most of the total fungi (more than 69%). The microbial concentrations measured inside the cattle sheds were comparable to those in other reports. Nevertheless, the present arithmetic and geometric mean (GM) microbial concentrations exceeded the Korean guideline for total airborne bacteria at medical facilities ($800\;CFU\;m^{-3}$), the current GM residential indoor concentrations at houses, and the residential indoor levels reported in other countries. The present findings suggest the need for a strategy to reduce Korean cattle farmers' exposure to these microorganisms. In contrast to the microbes, it is suggested that the cattle shed is not an important microenvironment for $PM_{10}$ exposure. Two characteristics examined in this study (seasonal variation and summer survey period, i.e., temperature and humidity) were all important for the cattle farmers' occupational exposure to airborne microbes. The lack of constancy between highest and lowest concentrations of bioaerosols over the survey period further suggests the necessity of performing a long-term survey to better examine farmer exposure levels and their variability.

The in situ observations and the seawater analyses were conducted for 3 years from August 1996 to August 1999 in order to elucidate and evaluate seasonal variations of marine water quality and trophic state in Mokpo harbour of Korea. Compared the seasonal seawater qualities of Mokpo harbour with the OECD standards of trophic classification in parameters such as Secchi depth, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate phosphorus and chlorophyll-a, the trophic level of seawater in Mokpo harbour was evaluated to be in mesotrophic or eutrophic state through all 4 seasons and to be in eutrophic state, particularly In summer. The estimation of pollution index by eutrophication showed the seawater quality of Mokpo harbour to deteriorate and fall under the regular grades through all 4 seasons, although the seawater quality of Mokpo harbour was evaluated to be equivalent to the second or third class of the Korean seawater quality standards in view of COD values. The results of eutrophication index estimation showed the high potentiality of red tide occurrence In Mokpo harbour, particularly in summer or fall. In the light of the average atomic ratio of N/P in seawater, the limiting nutrient factor against the growth of phytoplankton was concluded to be phosphorus rather than nitrogen in Mokpo Harbour.

This study was carried out to evaluate non-smoker's exposure levels to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) in the air of offices in urban areas. A total of 65 offices were selected from two large cities, i.e. Daegu and Daejeon. The field sampling was conducted repeatedly in summer (1999) and winter (1999~2000). The measured ETS markers included respirable suspended particles (RSP as PM$_{40}$ ), vapor and particulate phase ETS markers, including nicotine, 3-ethnyl pyridine (3-EP), ultraviolet absorbing particulate matter (UVPM), fluorescing particulate matter (FPM), and solanseol in ETS particles (SolPM). RSP was measured gravimetrically by a microbalance. The particle samples were then used for the determination of particulate ETS markers by HPLC, while vapor phase markers determined by GC/NPD. The analytical methods were validated for repeatability, linearity, detection limits, and duplication precision. The concentrations of RSP and other ETS markers were significantly higher in smoking offices than non-smoking offices. Despite the similar smoking strength in each office for different seasons, the concentration levels of ETS components appeared to be higher in winter than summer. The contributions of ETS to RSP concentrations based on SolPM, FPM, and UVPM methods were estimated to be in the range of 15.2 ~ 25.3% in smoking offices, whereas 2.4 ~ 15.9% in non-smoking offices. The cooling and heating types did not affect significantly the concentrations of RSP and other ETS markers. Finally, further research issues were suggested to obtain more scientific information on the non-smoker's exposure to ETS with respect to the frame of risk assessment..

Black carbon (BC) concentrations were measured with an aethalometer (AE-16, 880 nm) at time interval of 5-min at an urban site of Gwangju over a year 2008. 24-hr filter-based integrated measurements of $PM_{2.5}$ particles were also made at the same site during the winter and summer intensive periods to test any optical loading bias in the raw BC data measured by aethalometer. BC concentration was higher in winter than in summer, possibly due to increase in emissions from energy consumption and poor dispersion with reduction of boundary layer in winter. Also temporal cycles of BC indicate that short-term transient spikes were common, occurring primarily during the rush-hour periods. A similar feature was also observed in diurnal concentration cycle of CO, mainly emitted from motor vehicles. When both low wind speed and weather patterns such as mist, haze and etc were combined, high BC concentrations frequently occurred. The amount of optical loading effect described by the "k" factor showed the seasonal variation, ranging from 0.0003 to 0.0036. This implies that optical loading effect is not seen at all times. From the comparison between the filter-based elemental carbon (EC) and aethalometer BC data, it was found that the loading compensated BC values were more reasonable than the raw BC ones reported from the aethalometer.
