We measured various geochemical parameters, including the grain size, loss on ignition(LOI), total organic carbon(TOC), total nitrogen(TN), total sulfur(TS) and metallic elements, in surface sediment collected from 19 stations in Gamak Bay in April 2010 in order to understand the sedimentary types, the origin of organic matters, and the distribution patterns of alkali(Li, Na, K, Rb) and alkaline earth(Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) elements. The surface sediments were mainly composed of mud. The concentrations of Chlorophyll-a, TOC, TN, TS and LOI in sediment were the highest at the cultivation areas of fish and shellfish in the northern and southern parts of the bay. The redox potential(or oxidation-reduction potential) showed the positive value in the middle part of the bay, indicating that the surface sediment is under oxidized condition. The organic materials in sediment at almost all of stations were characterized by the autochthonous origin. Based on the overall distributions of metallic elements, it appears that the concentrations of alkali and alkaline earth elements except Ba in sediment are mainly influenced by the dilution effect of quartz. The concentrations of Sr and Ba are also dependent on the secondary factors such as the effect of calcium carbonate and the redox potential.

Diabetes mellitus has been known to be a state of increased oxidative stress. Free radical formation and lipid peroxidation are accelerated in this metabolic disorder. Buchu (Allium tuberosum Rottler) contains lots of antioxidative nutrients such as chlorophyll, vitamin C, $\beta$-carotene, phenolic compounds and sulfur compounds. To investigate the protective effects of buchu, 10% lyophilized buchu diet was fed to streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats for 14 weeks and lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, contents of reactive oxygen species, activities of antioxidative enzymes and contents of accumulated lipofuscin were measured as indicators of oxidative stress. Hepatic MDA and carbonyl contents tended to decrease in 10% buchu diet group compared with control group. Dietary buchu significantly suppressed lipid and protein oxidation in the skin of rats (p<0.05). Contents of hepatic hydroxyl radicals, which exert the highest toxicity among the reactive oxygen species, were significantly decreased in rats fed 10% buchu diet (P<0.05). Activities of antioxidative enzyme, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, tended to increase in liver and skin of rats fed 10% buchu diet, while hepatic catalase activity was significantly increased in buchu group compared with control group. Buchu supplementation significantly inhibited the accumulation of lipofuscin, an end-product of lipid peroxidation reactions induced by reactive oxygen radicals, in eye tissues compared with control diet (p<0.001). In conclusion, buchu supplementation diminished the oxidative stress, so dietary buchu could help to attenuate diabetes complications.

The aim of this study was to develop retorted samgyetang marinated with different levels of soy sauce and processed at different F0 (thermal death time at 121℃) values. The tested marinade series comprised different percentages of soy sauce in water (0%, 25%, and 50% [w/w]) containing a fixed concentration of sodium tripolyphosphate (0.3% [w/w]). Following marination, samgyetang was prepared and subjected to retort processing, until an F0 value of either 8 or 29 was achieved. Meat quality analysis of the breast meat, sensory evaluation, and aroma analysis were performed as indicators of acceptability. The meat pH decreased as the soy sauce content increased, regardless of the F0 value. The shear force value significantly decreased as the concentration of soy sauce increased, but increased as the F0 value increased (p < 0.05). Lipid oxidation was not affected by marination, but increased significantly as the F0 value increased (p < 0.05). The proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids decreased significantly (p < 0.05) as the F0 value increased. The total alkane content decreased as the F0 value increased (p < 0.05). Changes in the total volatile sulfur compound and 2-butyl-1-octanol content were affected by soy sauce marination. Marination using 25% soy sauce and retort sterilization, until an F0 value of either 8 or 29 was achieved, improved the acceptability of samgyetang. Therefore, marination using 25% soy sauce and retort sterilization until an F0 value of 8 is the process recommended for developing a soy sauce-flavored, retorted samgyetang product of acceptable quality.

Sulfur dioxide (SO$_2$), ozone, total suspended particulates (TSP) and PM$_{2.5}$ were measured at Deokjeok Island in the Yellow Sea during April 1999 to June 2000. Although the emission amount of air pollutants is quite low in this small island of 36 km$^2$ with 1.4 thousand inhabitants, there are pollutant sources such as an oil -firing power plant and a wharf for ferryboat. The island is also influenced from the emissions from the greater Seoul area in the east and from China in the west. In order to characterize the pollutant variations due to interactions between transport and local emissions. the correlation between variations of SO$_2$ and ozone was investigated. Mass and ion concentrations of TSP and PM$_{2.5}$ were examined on selected episode days of positive and negative correlations between the two gaseous species in spring and winter. The effects of transport were pronounced on the days of positive correlation in spring with higher concentrations of ozone and PM$_{2.5}$. TSP concentrations were also high on these days because of high wind speeds. On the days of negative correlation in spring, frequent fog associated with low wind speeds facilitated SO$_2$ oxidation and increased sulfate accompanied with decrease in nitrate in PM$_{2.5}$ and chloride in TSP. This latter phenomena was noticeable since it showed that chemical composition of fine particles could be significantly altered not only during the transport but also by local environment.ronment.

The bacteria B1-9 that was isolated from the rhizosphere of the green onion could promote growth of pepper, cucumber, tomato, and melon plants. In particular, pepper yield after B1-9 treatment on the seedling was increased about 3 times higher than that of control plants in a field experiment. Partial 16S rDNA sequences revealed that B1-9 belongs to the genus Pantoea ananatis. Pathogenecity tests showed non-pathogenic on kimchi cabbage, carrot, and onion. The functional characterization study demonstrated B1-9's ability to function in phosphate solubilization, sulfur oxidation, nitrogen fixation, and indole-3-acetic acid production. To trace colonization patterns of B1-9 in pepper plant tissues, we used $DRAQ5^{TM}$ fluorescent dye, which stains the DNAs of bacteria and plant cells. A large number of B1-9 cells were found on the surfaces of roots and stems as well as in guard cells. Furthermore, several colonized B1-9 cells resided in inner cortical plant cells. Treatment of rhizosphere regions with strain B1-9 can result in efficient colonization of plants and promote plant growth from the seedling to mature plant stage. In summary, strain B1-9 can be successfully applied in the pepper plantation because of its high colonization capacity in plant tissues, as well as properties that promote efficient plant growth.
In the past several decades, biofuels have emerged as candidates to help mitigate the issues of global warming, fossil fuel depletion and, in some cases, atmospheric pollution. To date, the only biofuels that have achieved any significant penetration in the global transportation sector are ethanol and biodiesel. The global consumption of biodiesel was rapidly increased from 2005. The goal of this study was to examine the chemical composition on particulate pollutant emissions from a diesel engine operating on several different biodiesels. Tests were performed on non-road diesel engine. Experiments were performed on 5 different fuel blends at 2 different engine loading conditions (50% and 75%). 5 different fuel blends were ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD, 100%), soy biodiesel (Blend 20% and Blend 100%) and canola biodiesel (Blend 20% and Blend 100%). The chemical properties of particulate pollutants were characterized using an Aerodyne High Resolution Time of Flight Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS). Organic matter and nitrate were generally the most abundant aerosol components and exhibited maximum concentration of $1207{\mu}g/m^3$ and $30{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. On average, the oxidized fragment families ($C_xH_yO_1{^+}$, and $C_xH_yO_z{^+}$) account for ~13% of the three family sum, while ~87% comes from the $C_xH_y{^+}$ family. The two peaks of $C_2H_3O_2$ (m/z 59.01) and $C_3H_7O$ (m/z 59.04) located at approximately m/z 59 could be used to identify atmospheric particulate matter directly to biodiesel exhaust, as distinguished from that created by petroleum diesel in the AMS data.
The properties related to the temperature and oxygen stability of the cytoplasmic hydrogenases from the fermentative strict anaerobic bacterium, Clostridium butyricum NCIB 9576 (Cl. butyricum), and purple sulfur phototrophic bacterium, Thiocapsa roseopersicina NCIB 8347 (T. roseopersicina), were compared. The optimum temperatures for the growth of Cl. butyricum and T. roseopersicina were 37$^{\circ}C$ and 25$^{\circ}C$, respectively, whereas those for the H$_2$ evolution of the cytoplasmic hydrogenases prepared from Cl. butyricum (C-H$_2$ase) and T. roseopersicina (T-H$_2$ase) were 45$^{\circ}C$ and 65$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The T-H$_2$ase was more thermostable than the C-H$_2$ase and retained its full activity for 5 h at 50$^{\circ}C$ under anaerobic conditions and 90% of its activity at 60$^{\circ}C$, whereas the C-H$_2$ase lost its activity drastically at 50$^{\circ}C$. The optimum pHs for H$_2$ oxidation of the C-H$_2$ase and T-H$_2$ase were 9.0 and 7.5, respectively. Both enzymes showed a maximum H$_2$ evolution activity at pH 7.0. Under aerobic conditions, 80% of the T-H$_2$ase activity was retained for 10 h at 30$^{\circ}C$, and 50% of the activity remained after 6 days under the same experimental conditions. However, the C-H$_2$ase was labile to oxygen and lost its activity immediately on exposure to air. Therefore, these properties of the T-H$_2$ase are expected to be advantageous for application in in vitro biological H$_2$ production systems.
This research was conducted to study the offensive odor adhesion efficiency of filter bed materials using the experimental column that was designed and constructed in this work. The offensive odor adhesion experiment was conducted using mixture of high physical adhesion efficiency material, and the fixity of deodorization microorganism of selected filter bed material was tested using ammonia exclude microorganism A4-2 and sulfur oxidation microorganism S5-5.2 those were cultured at the Agricultural Chemical Department of Chungnam National University, and deodorization efficiency of selected filter bed material mixture was tested. Followings are summary of these tests results. 1) Amount of elimination of the offensive odor gas ammonia and hydrogen sulfide per unit volume were 0.054 and 0.016 $\ell$/㎤ in rice hull, 0.01 and 0.004 $\ell$/㎤ in rice straw, 0.158 and 0.01 $\ell$/㎤ in coconut, 0.014 and 0.02 $\ell$/㎤ in perlite, 0.004 and 0.003 $\ell$/㎤ in high road ball, and 0.112 and 0.015 $\ell$/㎤ chaff of pine, respectively. 2) Amount of elimination of offensive odor gas of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide per unit vloume were 0.079 and 0.016 $\ell$/㎤ in mixture 1, 0.045 and 0.014 $\ell$/㎤ in mixture 2, 0.123 and 0.017 $\ell$/㎤ in mixture 3, 0.055 and 0.016 $\ell$/㎤ in mixture 4, 0.031 and 0.015 $\ell$/㎤ in mixture 5, and 0.111 and 0.020 $\ell$/㎤ in mixture 6, respectively. 3) The offensive odor elimination microoraganism inoculated to the mixture of chaff of pine (70%) and pert (30%) showed the elimination efficiency of 99.06% and 96.61% against the ammonia and hydrongen sulfide, respectively, during 24 hours period.

The aerosol concentrations of ionic components were measured on a daily basis from a coastal monitoring site located at Kosan, Cheju Island from 26 September to 5 October 1997 as a field-intensive for a LRTAP project The chemical species we investigated include most of important inorganic species (i.e., Cl-, NO3-, F-, SO42-, Na+, NH4+, and K+) and some organic species (i.e. formats, acetate, and methanesulfonate (MSA) ions). The concentration data of those important inorganic and organic species obtained during this study were evaluated to properly address their chemical and physical characteristics. Most of major inorganic components including sulfate, sodium, chloride, and potassium ions exhibited very conservative relationships with each other such that the concentration ratios of any pair are quite analogous to that of seawater ratio. Since the oceans serve as the major sources of ionic constituents, their concentration changes appear to be senstively reflected by the factors affecting air-sea processes such as an increase in wind speed or changes in wind direction. A comparative analysis of sulfur-containing species such as seasalt (SS) and nonseasalt (NSS) sulfate and MSA were also made to assess the factors influencing the S cycling. An evaluation of NSS/SS ratios suggests that most of sulfate be associated with NSS fraction rather than 55 one. The finding of lower MSA/NSS-SO42- ratio along with a line of physical evidence such as intrusion of anthropogenically affected air mass suggests that the oxidation of S species have been promoted under the conditions encountered during the study period. Finally, the concentration data of carboxylic species (such as formats and acetate ions) were also analyzed. Although the existence of temporal trends were difficult to assess, these data indicate that their contribution to the precipitation acidity may not be significant enough.
Purpose - The purpose of this study is to apply a cost effective ultrasonic odor reduction method that generated micro-bubbles using ejector to the Southeast Asian wastewater market. Research design, data, and methodology - A leather maker located in Ansan-city, Gyunggi-do, South Korea was sampled from the collection tank to select experimental materials. Experimental setup consisted of circulating water tank-air ejector-ultrasonic device, and circulating wastewater. Sample analysis was performed by CODcr, T-N, T-P, and turbidity by the National Environmental Science Institute. Results - Experimental results show that it is most effective in removing odors when the frequency range of ultrasonic wave is 60~80 Khz and the output is 200 W. It showed that the concentration of complex odor dropped from a maximum of 14,422 times to a minimum of 120 times. Also, analysis of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide in specific odor substances has shown that they were reduced from 1.5 ppm to 0.4 ppm and from 0.6 ppm to 0.1 ppm, respectively. Conclusions - It is possible to shorten more than 12 hours in the treatment of micro-organisms. It can be seen that the processing time of odor after ultrasonic treatment in the pre-treatment facility is reduced by 25% when compared to the resultant micro-organisms after the chemical treatment, that is, the time of the bio-treatment of micro-organisms. Based on the results, it was confirmed that the pre-treatment method using the ultrasonic and the air ejector device of the experiment shows the effect of reducing the water pollutants and odor more effectively in a relatively short time than the conventional advanced oxidation method.
