  • The application of polymer composite electrolyte in all-solid-state lithium-sulfur battery (ASSLSBs) can guarantee high energy density and improve the interface contact between electrolyte and electrode, which has a broader application prospect. However, the inherent insulation of the sulfur-cathode leads to a low electron/ion transfer rate. Carbon materials with high electronic conductivity and electrolyte materials with high ionic conductivity are usually selected to improve the electron/ion conduction of the composite cathode. In this work, PEO-LiTFSI-LLZO composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) with high ionic conductivity was prepared. The ionic conductivity was 1.16×10-4 and 7.26×10-4 S cm-1 at 20 and 60℃, respectively. Meanwhile, the composite sulfur cathode was prepared with Sulfur, reduced graphene oxide and composite polymer electrolyte slurry (S-rGO-CPEs). In addition to improving the ion conductivity in the cathode, CPEs also replaces the role of binder. The influence of different contents of CPEs in the cathode material on the performance of the constructed battery was investigated. The results show that the electrochemical performance of the all-solid-state lithium-sulfur battery is the best when the content of the composite electrolyte in the cathode is 40%. Under the condition of 0.2C and 45℃, the charging and discharging capacity of the first cycle is 923 mAh g-1, and the retention capacity is 653 mAh g-1 after 50 cycles.

  • The study was performed to investigate the effects of gaseous emission of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on the growth of rice plant under stressed field conditions. This study is specifically dealt with multiple effects of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on various plant growth indicators such as leaf damage, weight of grain, panicles per hill, spikelets per panicle and percent fertility. It appears that there is a good correlation between ambient concentrations of sulfur oxides and sulfur contents found in leaves with an average correlation coefficient of 0.868 within a 1% significance level. A better multiple correlation was found between percent leaf damage and sulfur and fluorine contents found in leaf with a significance of 1% level. The correlation coefficient ranges from 0.807 to 0.978 with an average being 0.922. An evaluation of data observed has demonstrated that both panicles per hill and percent fertility are significantly affected by air pollutants. As expected, hydrogen fluorides have more effects than sulfur oxides. It is, however, interesting to note that spikelets per panicle has slightly been affected while no indication of effects on l000-grain weight has been observed. This may lead to a conclusion that a reduction in yield of rice under polluted field conditions may have more been caused by the diminution panicles per hill and percent fertility rather than by the diminution of spikelets per panicle and grain weight.

  • This research was conducted to estimate the physicochemical characteristics of waste catalyst and its in-process product from recycling and to suggest fundamental data for religious systems such as quality standards. Mo and V contents were increased from the waste catalyst to calcinated material and oxidized material. In the results of a heavy metals leaching test, Pb was not detected in any catalyst, calcinated and oxidized materials. Cu was not detected in the catalyst. However, it was detected in ${\leq}$1.16 mg/l for calcinated material and in 1.34~13.73 mg/l for $MoO_3$ oxidezed material. Concentrations in recycling in-process products (calcinated and oxidized materials) were higher than those of waste catalyst. Oil content of catalyst waste ranged from 0.01-14.03 wt%. Oil contents of calcinated and oxidized materials were greatly decreased compared to the catalyst waste. Carbon and sulfur contents as chemical poisoning material of catalyst waste ranged from 0.33-76.08 wt% and 5.00-22.00 wt%, respectively. The carbon contents of calcinated and oxidized materials showed below 20 wt%. The sulfur content showed below 8wt% for calcinated material and below 0.22 wt% for oxidized material.

  • Young radishes (YR, yeolmu in Korean) were cultivated in the soil with and without sulfur. Young radish kimchi-general (YR kimchi-G) was prepared with YR commonly cultivated in the soil without sulfur. Young radish kimchl-sulfur (YR kimchi-S) and young radish kimchi-sulfur with lime mortar (YR kimchi-SL) were prepared with the YR cultivated in the soil with sulfur an4 sulfur added lime mortar on it respectively. Antitumor effects of methanol extracts from the YR kimchis were investigated in sarcoma-180 tumor cell transplanted mice. The solid tumor growth was significantly inhibited by the YR kimchi-SL prepared with YR grown in the soil with sulfur (p < 0.05). The treatment of the methanol extracts from YR kimchi-S and -SL increased the glutathione S-transferase activities and glutathione contents in the livers, compared to thlose of YR kimchi-G and the control. One of the antitumor effects by the YR kimchis was due to the increased the glutathione levels and the glutathione S-transferase activity which is phase 2 enzyme. These results also suggested that the antitumor effects of YR kimchi can be enhanced by using YR cultivated differently in the presence of sulfur that can help to produce sulfur-containing compounds in YR.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the sulfur effects on the yield of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) and the chemical properties of soil after sulfur treatment. Sulfur application was conducted with two chemical forms of sulfur powder and potassium sulfate. Sulfur powder was applied to the soil with levels of 0, 10, 20, 40 kg/10a and potassium sulfate was applied to the soil with levels of 10, 20 kg/10a as sulfur content. After sulfur application in soils, pH and available $P_2O_5$ content of soils tend to decrease after experiment, whereas the contents of $SO_4^{2-}$ and active Fe increased in soils. By the application of sulfur, the yields of safflower seed were increased by about $6{\sim}17$ percent compared to the control. It is apparent that seed yield and plant growth of safflower were increased by the sulfur application.

  • In the previous paper, it was reported that formation of desirable calcium alunimate(CA) in clinker was considerably affected by sulfur-contaminated alumina which was prone to form a disadvantageous mineral, $C_4A_3S$. In this study, however, sulphate-free alumina cement was made from sulfur-free alumina refined from alunite and corresponding materials. The major minerals in the clinker were identified by X-ray diffraction patterns as calcium aluminate (CA), calcium dialuminate $(CA_2)$ and dicalcium alumino silicate $(C_2AS)$. The formation of CA was more effective with decreasing contents of silica to 2 per cent or less and sulfur in the refined alumina. Physical properties of prepared alumina cement such as setting time, stability and compressive strength were measured. The values were similar to those of commercial alumina cements.

  • The study was performed to evaluate the usefulness of windbreaks to reduce the effect of sulfur dioxide and hydrogen fluoride on the growth of rice plants. It was observed that various pollution indicators such as the ambient concentrations of sulfur oxide and fluoride, sulfur and fluorine contents found in leaves appear to be significantly reduced within 3 meters behind the break. In that region yield components seemed normal. It is, however, observed that the pollutional indicators appear to increase gradually back to the same level as they were on the upwind side of the break. As for the relationships between pollution indicators and yields and also yield components it was believed that pollutants found in leaves might serve as the most important indicators of pollutional damage to rice plant Cultivation in fields. There was high correlation between ambient concentrations and yield, and also yield components. More significantly, a better correlation seemed to exist between sulfur and fluorine contents observed in leaves and yield ; And between those contents and yield components.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the quality of fermented sausages manufactured with processed sulfur-fed pigs. The fermented sausages were divided into two groups; one was manufactured with non sulfur-fed pigs (NP), the other one was made with processed sulfur-fed pigs (SP). No differences were found in moisture and fat contents (p>0.05) between NP and SP, but the protein and ash con-tents of SP were significantly higher than those of NP (p<0.05). The pH of SP was significantly lower than that of NP, and the water activity ($a_w$) of SP was significantly higher than that of NP after 14 and 21 d (p<0.05). The TBA (Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance) w value of SP was significantly lower than that of NP (p<0.05). The lightness and yellowness of NP were significantly higher than those of SP, whereas the redness of NP was lower than SP (p<0.05). The total plate count of SP was lower than that of NP (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in TPA (Texture profile analysis) between the two samples. SP showed significantly increased monounsaturated fatty acid (p<0.05) and decreased saturated fatty acid. Umami taste and richness in SP were significantly higher than in NP (p<0.05). Therefore, it is suggested that processed sulfur fed pigs may play a key role in enhancing the quality of meat products.
