Purpose : This study examined the factors related to sexual intercourse among adolescents in South Korea. Methods : The study sample was comprised of 65,528 middle and high school students aged 12 to 18 years in 2016. For this study, using the data from the 12th Korea youth risk behavior web-based survey, a chi-squared test, and hierarchical logistic regression analysis we reconducted with the SPSS 22.0 program considering personal, family, school, and regional characteristics. Results : The proportion of adolescents who had sexual intercourse was 6.0 % of boys and 2.7 % of girls, and 6.3 % of high school students and 2.4 % of middle school students. The statistically significant related factors of sexual intercourse were gender, grade, attempted suicide, ever drinking, ever smoking, habitual or purposeful drug use, weekly allowance, and coed school in the final model 4. Adolescents with suicide attempts had 2.49 times more sexual intercourse than adolescents with no experience of suicide attempts. Compared to adolescents without alcohol, smoking, and habitual drug use, those who have experienced alcohol, smoking, habitual or purposeful drug use were 2.22 times, 3.76 times, and 3.39 times more likely to have had sexual intercourse, respectively. Adolescents with a weekly allowance of more than 100,000 won per week and adolescents in coed schools were 2.84 times and 1.40 times more likely to have had sexual intercourse, respectively. Conclusion : Multi-level interventions should be considered in school sexual education programs while considering the substantiality of sex education and the actual adolescents' needs. In addition, sexual health interventions in cyberspace for high-risk groups may be needed to consider the emotional and mental characteristics, given the factors related to sexual intercourse in adolescents.

Purpose: This study was done to identify differences in health habits, perceived stress, depression, and suicidal thinking by gender for elderly people who are living alone and elderly people who are living with others. Method: The study participants were 4,051 people aged 65 years and over who were surveyed in the Third Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2005. The relationship among outcomes and living arrangement by gender in elders was assessed using multiple logistic regression while controlling for sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Older men living alone were less likely to have breakfast and more likely to perceive stress and think of suicide than older men living with family or others. On the other hand, older women who live alone were less likely to perceive stress than older women who live with others. Age, educational level, income, and number of diseases were significantly associated with each individual outcome. Conclusion: This study showed that living alone has a significant impact on physical health habits and psychological health of elderly people, especially for older men. Therefore, living arrangement should be considered in developing a health promotion program for elders as well as age, gender, education, and income.

Data were collected by the second grade 389 students of vocational girls' high school students in Pusan. Major findings were as follows: 1. Problem behaviors were different according to the type of problem behaviors and behavior frequencies. 2. Problem behaviors were influenced positively by the delinquency of friends and negatively by communication with parents and the successful school life. Communication with parents was influenced positively by the harmonious family atmosphere and the successful school life, negatively by stepparent family. 3. Runaway was influenced negatively by the harmonious family atmosphere and positively by the delinquency of friends. Gang fight was influenced negatively by the successful school life and positively by the delinquency of friends. Sex affairs was influenced positively by the delinquency of frends. Suicide trial was influenced negatively by the harmonious family atmosphere and the delinquency of friends, positively by stepparent family and communication with their parents. Gang fight was influenced by school environmental factors and suicide trial was influenced by family environmental factors.
This study analyzed the data from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to examine factors associated with help-seeking among Korean adults with suicidal ideation. The results from binary logistic regression analysis showed that being currently married, low family income, and absence of diagnosed clinical depression were negatively associated with seeking help. Gender, age, education, the PHQ total score, and health insurance did not significantly change the probability of seeking help. The future suicide help-seeking intervention should focus on those who are less likely to seek help.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of physical activity on suicidal ideation according to gender in South Korean adolescents. Methods: This study is designed as a cross-sectional study. Using the statistics from the 12th (2016) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, hierarchical logistic regression analysis was conducted. The study sample comprised 62,558 middle and high school students aged primarily 12 to 17. Results: The rate of engaging in physical activity more than three times a week was 39.6% for boys and 28.8% for girls and the rate of suicide ideation was 9.35% for boys and 14.9% for girls. Male students were 1.42 times more likely to commit suicide when they did not engage in physical activity than when they do more than three times a week but it was found to have no significant effect on female students. Conclusion: Physical activity should be encouraged in the physical education curriculum and the school health area to reduce suicidal ideation in adolescents. Differentiated interventions are required according to gender. It is suggested that intervention programs involving physical activity be implemented more actively for male students and intervention programs centering on obesity and smoking prevention be implemented for female students.

Objectives : Among adolescents, the proportion of daily smoking tends to increase with age, and does not return to the previous level. Therefore, we examined the factors associated with smoking frequency in a nationwide sample of Korean adolescents to help prevent the progression of smoking. Methods : Among 127,804 adolescents who participated in the 2016 and 2017 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey, data from 7,781 adolescents who replied that they currently smoked were analyzed. According to the frequency of cigarette smoking, participants were classified into daily and non-daily smokers. Participants' socio-demographic characteristics, smoking behavior, and psychological problems including perceived stress, depressive mood, and suicidality were assessed. Results : There were 3,627(47.4%) daily smokers and 4,154(52.6%) non-daily smokers. Low parental educational level, and early smoking experience were positively associated with daily smoking. High academic achievement, and high socio-economic status were negatively associated with daily smoking. Daily smoking was positively associated with lower happiness, lower sleep satisfaction, and severe stress during the past 12 months. Factors affecting suicide attempts of smokers were sex, residential type, socioeconomic status, and early smoking experience. Conclusion : The results indicated that socially disadvantaged families, and smoking experience with young age influenced daily smoking among Korean adolescents. Daily smoking was associated with psychological problems including lower happiness, lower sleep satisfaction, and severe stress. Early smoking experience influenced suicidal attempts among Korean adolescent smokers. Early intervention for smoking cessation in this high-risk group may contribute to prevention of these psychiatric complications of smoking.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between oral health factors and suicidal ideation in adolescents in order to provide basic data for adolescent suicide prevention and oral health promotion. Methods: This study used data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey held in 2017, in which a total of 62,276 youth participated. Data were analyzed by SPSS Ver. 22.0. Complex logistic regression analysis was used to analyze oral health factors related to suicidal ideation. Results: The effects of oral health on male students' suicidal ideation were as follows: brushing teeth 2-3 times a day was associated with decreased suicidal ideation (p<0.01), while suicidal ideation was increased in individuals who had experienced scaling within the past year (p<0.001), or, among experiences of oral disease within the last year, had reported prickling and throbbing pain (p<0.001), pain on the tongue and inside the cheeks (p<0.001), or bad breath (p<0.001). The effects of oral health on female students' suicidal ideation were as follows: brushing teeth 2-3 times a day was associated with decreased suicidal ideation (p<0.001), while suicidal ideation was increased in individuals who, among experiences of oral disease within the last year, had reported pain when chewing (p<0.001), pain on the tongue and inside the cheeks (p<0.01), or bad breath (p<0.001). Conclusions: The above results demonstrate that adolescent suicidal ideation and oral health factors are correlated, and it will be necessary to incorporate oral health interventions when planning or developing projects and programs for suicide prevention in adolescents.
