Preservation and Utilization of Suburban Green Lands in the Urbanization Process of Kunming

  • Suburban green lands play an indispensable role in maintaining norma! operation of the urban ecosystem. However, the suburban green lands are also the most fragile and easily disturbed places since they are close to the city edges. The suburban green lands of Kunming city show diversified forms, and it would be difficult to avoid taking part of those green areas in the rapidly expanding urban construction. To better preserve and utilize the suburban green lands of Kunming, it is vitally important to base ourselves on the practical situation of Kunming and take into full consideration the features of urban expansion and suburban green lands, so as to optimize the structures of suburban green lands, scientifically plan and readjust the remaining suburban green lands, and enhance the comprehensive efficiency of the daily dwindling suburban green lands in protecting and regulating the ecosystem, beautifying the environment and outputting economic benefits. Suburban green lands in some specialized areas must be put under strict protection.

The Visual Impacts of the Apartment Complex in Suburban Rural Area -The Case of Young-In City- (도시근교농촌 아파트 단지의 시각적 영향 -용인시를 대상으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect factors in suburban rural landscape and significant factors of apartment complex which are effective to the skyline of the sloped mountains. Also it is to propose the basic resources to preserve and improve the suburban rural landscape. The target site is Young-In, which shows the typical of rural development. Sides were take in young-In City along the roads and selected for 20 pieces. This study used questionnaire about the suburban rural landscape surveying of 45 students in Kyunghee Univ.. Also we found 2 dependent variables and 8 independent variables totally. Moreover, we have analyzed the data using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple linear regression method between the preference and physical factors, and between the vulnerability and perceptional factors. The results are as follows: 1) With the dependent variable of preference, the areas of "green space" and "agricultural productive lands" were highly influenced in the suburban rural landscape positively, but the areas of "apartment complex" and "other buildings" were negatively effected. 2) With the dependent variable vulnerability, the area "apartment complex" and cutting numbers of the "skyline of mountainous ridge" were proved as significantly positive factors, but the length of the "skyline of mountainous ridge" turned out to be a negative factor. Although this study has the difficulty to be generalized, it can be used for planning and designing of the apartment complex in suburban rural landscapes, and it will provide the basic guideline for preserving and managing of the suburban rural landscapes.uideline for preserving and managing of the suburban rural landscapes.

Landscape changes in suburban villages resulting from plant locations (공장입지에 따른 대도시 근교지역 농촌마을의 경관변화 특징)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics of the landscape changes in Gwangjyu city and Icheon city, the suburban areas on the outskirts of the Seoul metropolitan area, by focusing on the causes of the urban sprawl and the resultant morphological characteristics of landscape degradation. Particular attention has been given to the 'advantages for developing suburb including geographical proximity and land price', 'institutional regulation such as land-use regulation' and 'community solidarity' as drivers for possible introduction of external factors. The types of landscape change were divided into three, after having on-the-ground research on eleven chosen towns and interviews with head of a village: Overwhelming Change, Separated and Small-Scale Change. It was found that, in general, the quality of landscape was best for the small-scale change type, followed by separated and overwhelming change types. While the types of landscape change are correlated with the geographical proximity, its relevance with land regulation is relatively weak. The study found that imposing a land-use regulation as a means to prevent changes in suburban village landscape may not be fully effective. Also it analyzed that villages could better manage with keen interest the surrounding landscape if there is a high degree of solidarity within the village community. Therefore, the sense of community could play an important complementary role to land-use regulation which does not suffice in itself to manage suburban landscape.

To Protect and Utilize Suburban Green Space and To Expend Green Ecological Space at Urban Periphery

  • Suburban green space is an important component part of urban ecological system, the third largest space between urban center and peripheral countryside. Because of the specific regional location of the suburban green space, it differs from the green space in the center of the city in the respects of construction and planning. Anyhow, it has the features of less investment, quicker efficiency, free and easy management and good ecological effects. The writer of this paper holds that urban ecological construction should be planned rationally and laid out in an overall way under the prerequisite of making full use of and protecting local species so as to further extend the green ecological space at urban periphery, to create dense green surroundings, and to explore a way for ecological construction to develop in a scientific, effective and healthy way.

A Study on Community Landscape Design of Suburban City, Midlothian, in America (미국 도시근교 미들로시안 주거지경관계획에 관한 연구)

  • The goal of this study is to identify the new Architectural type of house and Landscape design pattern of the collective housing area in American garden city, Midlothian near Richmond of Virginia. I had been surveyed old houses of the Virginia and new single family houses and landscape design style of Mariners village to find a different style of houses and lots. The Richmond, capital city of Virginia, is surrounded by five suburban areas and counties. One of them is the Chesterfield where it has main street of Midlothian garden city. The city of Midlothian has a function of residence area both to stay in the forest garden and to go to downtown office of Richmond. There are a lot of collective housing area out of the capital city. I surveyed house form, lots, and site design pattern of the Mariners village in Midlothian. The community of Mariners shows a particular characteristics and harmonious pattern of suburban residence area in a view point of new project. There are three results of this study as follows: First, the types of house in suburban garden city, Midlothian, are focused on vernacular Colonial style with country house, traditional house, and front gable house form which are an unique new American single home. Second, the landscape design of this collective housing area, the Mariners village, has a unity view of residence community, harmony between house and lots, and a sensitive cul-de-sac pattern and loops type with rational land using based on the forest topology. Third, the Mariners village shows that the design concept of landscape architecture has to consider of traditionalism, naturalism, and living condition of residents.

Comparing subjective landscape perceptions between the native and non-native residents in suburban rural area - Searching for a landscape management based on the characteristics of urban to rural migrants - (도시근교 농촌경관에 대한 거주민별 주관적 인식 비교 - 귀농·귀촌인의 특성을 고려한 경관관리 방안모색 -)

  • As the importance of rural landscapes has recently emerged due to an increase in number of urban to rural migrants into suburban area in Korea, this study empirically grasps the differences in subjective landscapes perceptions between native and non-native residents. and tried to explore new landscape management possibilities through the role of each residents group. To this end, based on the data collected through the 'photo-elicitation with walking', the residents' landscape perception objects, perception factors, and perceived feelings are derived, and then the differences and characteristics of landscapes perception between native and non-native residents group were analyzed. As a result, native residents perceived everyday landscapes relatively meaningfully and provided abundant information in all aspects, while non-native residents mainly recognized characteristic landscapes and responded more sensitively to visual and environmental perception factors than the natives. Non-native residents also showed strong willingness to improve the degraded landscapes. These results are expected to provide a basis for exploring the role of residents in rural landscape planning and management in the future.

The Contradiction of Suburban Environment Conservation and Use

  • With the rapid development of urban suburbanization, a plenty of commercial operation of suburban environmental resource, the environment in suburb is more and more deteriorated. It also leads some passive effect on ecology, human, society and nature etc. At the same time, a serial of emergency rescue action has been implemented to decrease the deteriorating of suburban environment. For example, some important ecology nature reserves were built up; some compulsive protections have been put in practice for some key resource development region and gotten some good achievements. However, we still face the problem is that how to balance the contradiction between suburban environment resource development and conservation. It's necessary to introduce some western advantage management ideas, combined our actual situation, to find a way which is the most benefited to combine our country's suburb environment development and use.

A Study on Landscape Structure of Suburban Rural Village - Focused on Doojeong Maul in Pangsung, Pyeongtaek city - (도시근교마을의 경관구조에 관한 연구 - 평택시 팽성읍 두정1리 마을을 중심으로 -)

  • The aim of this study is how to understand of structural and elemental landscape image in suburban village. Nowadays, it is well known fact that suburban villages are most likely to be invaded by urbanization. Therefore, the research is focused on how the image of suburb has been changed, what patterns have been created in residential area, what are the different outcomes from different distance, and what are the changes in types of buildings, at particular village called Doojeong in Pyeongtaek city. When collecting supplemental information, elders in village have been participated in comparison of traditional and foreign. The village shows significant characteristics of such phenomenon. According to the research, there are three results. First, ironically, the structural patterns of the village is concentric as seen on urban garden, yet they do not have central function. Second, traditional homes are transformed into functional shape. The most popular roof design that takes 65 percent of whole is modernized flat roof shape. Hanok (Korean traditional house) style is disappearing. Third, due to the massive barn buildings and their monochrome, the beauty of community and architectural harmony are buried.

The Relationship between the observation distance, scale of buildings and the landscape preference by the landscape types in a suburban rural area (근교농촌의 경관유형에 따른 고층건물의 관찰거리 및 규모와 경관선호도와의 관계)

  • This study investigated the effect of high-rise buildings on the preference for rural landscapes. The study site was a Seoul suburban, Yong-in, which showed typical scenes of rural development. Slides used in the study were taken in Young-in along the national road 45(north-south) and national road 42(east-west). Forty slides reflecting typical characters of Young-in were selected. Among them, ten slides which were selected through factor analysis based on “ruralits”score were used as original slides. They represent ten landscape types. The simulation of original slides was based on the following aspects: a observation distance. number of buildings and landscape types. The preferences for the landscapes were tested by 200 respondents on 40 slides: Distance(2) ${\times}$ Landscape type(10) = 20 slides, Number of buildings(2) ${\times}$ Landscape type(10) = 20 slides. The following results are found: 1) When high-rise buildings are introduced into rural scenes, there are some vulnerable landscape types: the landscape with high “rurality”, the landscape with background skyline and the focal landscape. 2) The observation distance affects landscape preference. The hypothesis that the nearer the distance the lower the preferences, is accepted. However, there are some exceptions in 3 landscape types. 3) The hypothesis that the more the number of buildings, the lower the preferences, is rejected. The result is quite unexpected one. When a single building is introduced in natural scene, it draws more attention as a focal point than a group of buildings, and subsequently the visual impact is stronger.

An Approach to the Analysis of Landscape Heterogeneity in Seoul Metropolitan Suburbs (서울시 주변지역의 경관이질성 변화 분석기법 개발을 위한 기초연구)

  • Natural or human disturbances cause landscape changes, which may be measured by the degree of heterogeneity. In a 16km$\times$19km area, divided into 100m$\times$100m cells, of Seoul city and its suburb, land covers are classified into 6 groups in aerial photos and land use maps. The degree of heterogeneity is defined as the number of cells that surround a central cell but have different land cover from the central cell divided by 8. The value of the degree of heterogeneity is between 0 and 1. Major findings are 1) Both urban and natural areas have low degree of heterogeneity, about 0.15~0.17. 2) Suburban area under heavy pressure of development and urbanization has highest degree of heterogeneity, about 0.25. 3) The peak of the degree of heterogeneity moved about 4.5km outward in 22 years. 4) Outer suburban area has lower degree of heterogeneity as the area is a greenbelt or forest. 5) The results show the areas with higher degree of heterogeneity which may need landscape management plans, and natural areas with lower degree of heterogeneity which may need landscape conservation plans. A landscape change model may be built for a specific city when this technique is applied to multiple sectors of the city, and the model may predict future landscape changes of the city.
