  • Currently, geophysical method is applied for understanding the subsurface geologic structure economically and systematically, but there exists some limitations on recognizing complex subsurface structures precisely by a single geophysical method. In order to understand the complex subsurface structures, we applied various geophysical methods including seismic refraction survey, two-dimensional resistivity survey, seismic tomography survey, suspension-ps log, and understood distribution of low velocity, low resistivity range of resistivity survey and correlation of an intersecting point, velocity distribution of seismic tomography survey.

  • In this study, contact fatigue in wheel-rail contact is simulated. It is necessary to calculate contact stress and subsurface stresses accurately to predict fatigue behavior. Contact stresses are obtained by contact analysis of semi-infinite solid based on influence function and subsurface stress field obtained by using rectangular patch solutions. Based on these stress values, several multiaxial high-cycle fatigue criteria are used and the critical loads corresponding to fatigue limits are calculated. The simulation results show that the critical load is decreasing rapidly and the site of crack initiation also moves rapidly to the surface from the subsurface when friction coefficient exceeds a specific value for all of three fatigue criteria.

  • Ground cave-in is usually initiated by the formation of cavity within the ground due to soil loss. When the location of the cavity is deep in the ground, the detection of the cavity is not easy. Then it is possible that the hidden cavity expands for a long time to eventually cause sudden large-scale collapse. A case of large scale ground collapse in the old fill ground was studied and described in this paper. The underground cavity appeared to be caused by subsurface erosion deep in the ground and to expand/extend upward till it was ended by the catastrophic ground failure. It highlighted the importance of proper drainage work in a large scale land fill.

  • A form of measured temperature distribution to estimate condition of a electrical apparatus is a absolute reference for condition of the apparatus, time rate of transition, and difference between reference and currently temperature. Because passive thermography which has not injection of external thermal stimulation shows difference of temperature being on surface of a structure and temperature difference between the structure and back ground, the result could apply only to estimation or monitor for condition of terminal relaxation and overload related with temperature rising. However, a thermal flow in active thermography is differently generated by structure and condition of surface and subsurface. This paper presents the nondestructive testing using the properties and includes the results by heat injection and cooling to the apparatus. The buried discontinuity of subsurface could be detected by these techniques.

유한요소법을 이용한 미끄럼 접촉시 내부 복수 수평균열 전파해석 (Finite Element Analysis of Subsurface Multiple Horizontal Cracks Propagation in a Half-space Due to Sliding Contact)

  • Finite element analysis is performed on the subsurface crack propagation in brittle materials due to sliding contact. The sliding contact is simulated by a rigid asperity moving across the surface of an elastic half-surface containing single and multiple cracks. The single crack, coplanar cracks and parallel cracks are modeled to investigate the interaction effects on the crack growth in contact fatigue. The crack location is fixed and the friction coefficients between asperity and half-space are varied to analyze the effect of surface friction on stress intensity factor for horizontal cracks. The crack propagation direction is predicted based on the maximum range of shear and tensile stress intensity factors. With a coplanar crack, the stress intensity factor was increased. However, with a parallel crack, the stress intensity factor was decreased. These results indicate that the interaction of a coplanar crack increases fatigue crack propagation, whereas that of a parallel crack decreases it.

  • Gear is an essential component of an automotive. Crowning is used for tooth modification of a gear. The basic concept of gear tooth crowning is to reduce the stress concentration in edge of contact area and appropriate profile modifications can help gears to resist scoring, pitting, and tooth breakage. In this study, a method to determinate spur gear tooth crowning amount to make smooth surface stress and subsurface stress distribution is proposed. This method is based on the contact analysis.

Localization of Subsurface Targets Based on Symmetric Sub-array MIMO Radar

  • For the issue of subsurface target localization by reverse projection, a new approach of target localization with different distances based on symmetric sub-array multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is proposed in this paper. By utilizing the particularity of structure of the two symmetric sub-arrays, the received signals are jointly reconstructed to eliminate the distance information from the steering vectors. The distance-independent direction of arrival (DOA) estimates are acquired, and the localizations of subsurface targets with different distances are realized by reverse projection. According to the localization mechanism and application characteristics of the proposed algorithm, the grid zooming method based on spatial segmentation is used to optimize the locaiton efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed localization method and optimization scheme.

지중환경에서 미세플라스틱의 이동성에 대한 고찰 (Mobility of Microplastics in Subsurface Environments: Current Knowledge and Perspectives)

  • Plastics have become essential materials in human life for several decades. Meanwhile, the inadvertent spread of plastic debris from the use of many plastic products has raised global environmental concerns. The risk of microplastics in subsurface environment has received little attention because soil is considered to confine microplastics within the matrix. However, the concentration of microplastics in soil unavoidably increased as a result of an increase in plastic production and use. Based on lab experiments, several researches claimed that microplastics possibly penentrate soil layers. Recently, a few researches reported the occurrence of microplastics in groundwater. This study reviewed the recent reports of microplastic occurrences in soil and groundwater, and the modeling studies for simulating transport of microplastics. Additionally, the difficulties and limits in microplastics researches in soil and groundwater are discussed. Finally, several perspectives on microplastic studies in subsurface environment are suggested.

Deep learning classifier for the number of layers in the subsurface structure

  • In this paper, we propose a deep learning classifier for estimating the number of layers in the Earth's structure. When installing a grounding system, knowledge of the subsurface in the area is absolutely necessary. The subsurface structure can be modeled by the earth parameters. Knowing the exact number of layers can significantly reduce the amount of computation to estimate these parameters. The classifier consists of a feedforward neural network. Apparent resistivity curves were used to train the deep learning classifier. The apparent resistivity at 20 equally spaced log points in each curve are used as the features for the input of the deep learning classifier. Apparent resistivity curve data sets are collected either by theoretical calculations or by Wenner's measurement method. Deep learning classifiers are coded by Keras, an open source neural network library written in Python. This model has been shown to converge with close to 100% accuracy.

시추공영상분석을 이용한 지하 불연속면 분포의 가시화 실용연구 (Practical visualization of discontinuity distribution in subsurface using borehole image analysis)

  • 시추공 영상조사는 지하 구조를 직접 확인함으로서 좀더 정확한 자료를 얻기 위하여 실시되고 있으나, 시추공 좁은 공간내에 국한된 정보이기 때문에 원하는 공간범위의 지하 구조물에 직접적으로 적용하기 어려운 실정이다. 이에 시추공 영상 자료를 처리하고, 방향에 따른 위경사를 고려하여, 2차원의 지하 불연속면을 원하는 단면의 방향에따라 가시화하는 프로그램을 개발하고, 지하 불연속면의 분포를 넓은 공간에 확장하여 현장에 적용함으로서 시추공 영상분석을 보완하였다. 이와 관련된 프로그림이 별도로 판매되어 일부에서 사용되고 있으나, 내용이 알려지지 않았고 일반인이 사용하는데에 제한이 있었으므로 이번 기회에 희망자들이 쉽게 사용할 수 있게 될 것이다. 지하 구조물이 계획된 지역의 지하단면을 작성하기 위하여 포트란과 비쥬얼배직 프로그래밍 언어를 사용하여 Window GUI(Graphic User Interface) 환경으로 프로그램을 제작하였고 이 프로그램을 이용하여 전라북도 장수군 계남면 장계리 지역 터널계획 구간의 불연속면 분포도를 작성하였다. 시추공내에 국한된 불연속면을 가시화 프로그램을 이용하여 공간적으로 확장함으로서 부근 전체의 지하구조를 파악하며, 다른 지점에서의 불연속면의 분포 형태를 추측할 수 있었다. 또한 터널에 영향을 미치는 불연속면의 절리간극의 크기 범위와 불연속면들의 출현 심도 및 영향 범위 등을 계획된 터널의 방향에 따라 가시화하여 설계와 시공에 쉽게 이용하게 하였다.
