In domestic road construction sites, the compaction control based on strength are widely performed through the direct method with high accuracy, such as Plate Loading Test or Field CBR test. It is impossible to manage all construction sites using the direct method because the direct method requires heavy reaction loads and long measurement time. Therefore, it is necessary to apply the indirect method that could control the relative density of construction sites on the whole. Indirect methods, such as Cone Penetration Test and Fall Cone Test, require extra time for data analyzing and fixed area for test device. In this paper, the field applicability of Soil Impact Hammer (SIH) was investigated comparing with the results of field measurement tests and laboratory compaction tests. SIH developed by Japan Construction Administration and Asanuma Ltd., is a kind of indirect methods for compaction checking. According to the results of SIH performed in domestic road construction site, the subgrade reaction modulus obtained from SIH are similar to that from Plate loading tests in the range of 10 to 40. In comparison with laboratory compaction test, similar compaction line are shown in the dry side of optimum moisture contents.

The test fit has commonly used for the evaluation of the railbed condition, and indirect methods by using the compressional wave are also studied. the direct evaluation method by penetration test has not been studied. For the measurement of in-situ cone tip resistance of the railbed with minimizing the disturbance of the upper railbed. the cone penetrometer with the helical type outer rod(CPH) was developed. The outer rod, which has helical screw, is penetrated through the gravel layer and provides the reaction force for cone penetration testing. the cone tip resistances are measured by the mini cone penetrometer, where diameter is 15mm. For the developing the mini cone, strain gauge installation, circuit configuration, penetration rates and calibration process are considered. For the easy penetration of the screw rod in the field, the reaction force stepping plate and guide column are arranged. The screw rod are penetrated through the gravel layer. And the mini cone was pushed into the subgrade railbed at the penetration rate of 1mm/sec. The penetration test shows that the cone tip resistance increases along the depth. In addition, the subgrade condition is evaluated. This study demonstrates that the CPH may be effectively used for the evaluation of subgrade method any damage of the gravel layer.

The failure of civil engineering systems is a consequence of decision making under uncertain conditions. Generally, buried flexible pipes are designed for their transversal behavior to prevent from the important failure mode of buckling. However, the interaction effects between soil and pipe are neglected and the uncertainties in their properties are usually not considered in pipe design. In this regard, the present research paper evaluates the effects of these uncertainties on the uncertainty of the critical buckling hoop force of flexible pipes shallowly buried using the subgrade reaction theory (Winkler model) and First-Order Second-Moment (FOSM) method. The results show that the structural uncertainties of the studied pipes and those of the soil properties have a significant effect on the uncertainty of the critical buckling hoop force, and therefore taking into account these latter in the design of the shallowly flexible pipes for their buckling behavior is required.

The joint in the concrete pavement provides a control against transverse or longitudinal cracking at slab, which may be caused by temperature or moisture variation during or after hydration. Without control of cracking, random crack may cause more serious distresses and result in structural or functional failure of pavement system. Sometimes, joint itself, purposed to control crack, may cause a distresses in joint due to its inherent weakness in structural integrity. Thus, the load transfer capacity in joint is very important for serviceability and durability. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop an evaluation system at joints of jointed concrete pavement using finite element analysis was performed using ILLI-SLAB program with a selected variables which might affect fairly to on the performance of transverse joints. The most significant variables were selected from precise analysis. It was concluded that the variables which most significantly affect to pavement deflections are the modulus of subgrade reaction(K) and the modulus of dowel/concrete interaction(G), and limiting criteria on the performance of joints at JCP at 300pci, 500,000 lb/in. respectively.

PURPOSES: The existing method evaluating the existence of the hollows in concrete pavement does not consider the stiffness of pavement. In addition, the method uses unreasonable logic judging the hollow existence by the deflection caused by zero loading. In this study, the deflection of slab corner due to heavy weight deflectometer (HWD) was measured in concrete pavement sections where underground structures are located causing the hollows around them. METHODS: The modulus of subgrade reaction obtained by comparing the actual deflection of slab to the result of finite element analysis was calibrated into the composite modulus of subgrade reaction. The radius of relative stiffness was calculated, and the relationship between the ratio of HWD load to the radius of relative stiffness and the slab deflection was expressed as the curve of secondary degree. RESULTS: The trends of the model coefficients showing width and maximum value of the curve of secondary degree were analyzed by categorizing the pavement sections into three groups : hollows exist, additional investigation is necessary, and hollows do not exist. CONCLUSIONS: The results analyzed by the method developed in this study was compared to the results analyzed by existing method. The model developed in this study will be verified by analyzing the data obtained in other sections with different pavement structure and materials.
The field plate load test has a good potential for determining modulus since it measures both plate pressure and settlement. Conventionally the modulus has been assumed to be a constant secant value defined from the settlement of the plate at a given load intensity. A constant modulus (modulus of subgrade reaction, k), however, may not be a representative value of subgrade soil under working load. Field strain(o. stress)-dependent modulus characteristics of subgrade soils, at relatively low to intermediate strains, are important in the pavement design. In this study, the field strain dependent moduli of subgrade soils were obtained using cyclic plate load test. Testing procedure and data reduction method are proposed. The field crosshole and laboratory resonant column tests were also performed to determine field nonlinear modulus at $0.001\%\;to\;0.1\%$ strains, and the modulus values and nonlinear trends are compared to those obtained by cyclic plate load tests. Both modulus values match relatively well when the different state of stress between two tests was considered, and the applicability of field cyclic plate load test for determining nonlinear modulus values of subgrade soils is verified.

This paper presents full scale model tests on the various types of model piles carried out to estimate the behavior of laterally loaded steel-concrete composite piles. Subgrade-reaction spring system was developed to simulate the reaction of ground in laboratory condition. In addition, lateral behavior of piles under working load condition was estimated using composite loading system, which is available for independent loading in vertical and horizontal direction. Steel-concrete composite piles showed higher efficiency in lateral resistance rather than drilled shaft made of reinforced concrete. The lateral resistance of composite pile was larger than the summation of steel pile and concrete pile due to the composite effect by steel casing. The effect of shear key or strength of concrete on the behavior of composite pile was examined. The substitution of reinforcing bar by steel casing was also investigated.
This paper presents a back-calculation technique leer the prediction of the behavior of earth wall inserted in multi-layered soil deposit. The soil properties are back-calculated from the measured displacement at each construction stage and the behavior of earth wall far the next construction stage is predicted using back-calculated soil properties. For multi-layered soil deposit, the back-calculation would be very difficult due to the increase in the number of variables. In this study, to solve this difficulty, the back-calculation was performed successively from the lowest layer to the upper layers. An efficient elasto-plastic beam-column analysis was used for forward analysis to minimize the computation time of iterative back-calculation procedure. The coefficients of subgrade reaction and lateral earth pressure necessary for the formation of p-y curve were selected as back calculation variables, and to minimize the effect of abnormal behavior of the wall which might be caused by any unexpected action during construction, the difference between measured displacement increment and computed displacement increment at each construction stages is used as the objective function of optimization. The constrained sequential linear programming was used for the optimization technique to found values of variables minimizing the objective function. The proposed method in this study was verified using numerically generated data and measured field data.
