  • The ion exchange resins have been synthesized from chlormethyl styrene - 1,4 - divinylbenzene(DVB) with 1%, 2%, 4% and 8%-crosslinking and 1-aza-18-crown-6 macrocyclic ligand by copolymerization method. Content of chlorine in styrene-DVB copolymer was decreased as crosslink increased and it is because as crosslink increased 1%, 2%, 4% and 8% DVB content increased and crosslink density increased and cavity was reduced. Functional group of resin almost disappeared as C-C1 peak around $700cm^{-1}$ was substituted with 1-aza-18-C-6 macrocyclic ligand and new peak of C-N around $1020cm^{-1}$ appeared, so it was confirmed that styrene-DVB copolymer and ligand were compounded. As crosslink increased in the analysis of element contents, it resulted in the reduction of nitrogen content and it is because as crosslink increased, it led to the reduction of chlorine content in the process of substitution reaction and it affected macrocyclic ligand substituted. Thermo analysis curve of functional synthetic resin decomposed three part of 1-aza-18-C-6, styrene, and DVB. Form of functional synthetic resin showed distortion of its particles as macrocyclic ligand was introduced to styrene-DVB copolymer and hydrogen of ligand caused substitution with chlorine element of styrene molecule.

  • Influence of the styrene content on the retraction behaviors of SBR vulcanizates was studied. SBRs with different styrene contents of 15 and 21 wt% were used. The vulcanizate with low styrene content started to recover at lower temperature than that with high one. The recovery rate of the vulcanizate with low styrene content was slower than that with high one. The recovery difference between the two vulcanizates with different styrene contents was larger for the carbon black-filled vulcanizates than for the silica-filled ones. The experimental results were explained with the glass transition temperature and modulus.

  • To explore the effects of intramolecular interactions within the copolymer on the phase separation behavior of polymer blends, copolymers having two different types of intramolecular interactions, i.e., intramolecular repulsion and intramolecular attraction were prepared . In this study, poly(styrene-co-methylmethacrylate) (P(S-MMA)) having intramolecular repulsion caused by positive interaction between styrene and MMA and poly(styrene-co-ethyl-methacrylate) (P(S-EMA)) and poly(styrene-co-cyclohexylmethacrylate) (P(S-CHMA)) having intramolecular attraction caused by negative interaction between styrene and methacrylate were blended with tetramethyl poly-carbonate (TMPC). The phase behavior of blends was examined as a function of copolymer composition and blend composition. TMPC formed miscible blends with styrenic copolymers containing less than certain amount of methacrylate. The phase separation temperature of TMPC blends with copolymer such as P(S-MMA) and P(S-EMA), first increases with methacrylate content, goes through a maximum and then decreases just prior to the limiting content of methacrylate for miscibility, while that of TMPC blends with P(S-CHMA) always decreases. The calculated interaction energy for TMPC-P(S-EMA) pair is negative and monotonically increases with EMA content of the copolymer. Such behavior contradicted the general notion that systems with more favorable energetic interactions have higher LCST, The detailed inspection of the lattice-fluid theory related to the phase behavior was performed to explain such behavior.

  • We examined effects of crosslinking agents, i.e., ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGD) and butanediol dimethacrylate (BDD) containing ester groups on chloromethylation of crosslinked polystyrene resin matrices. It was proved that the ester group in methylmethacrylate (MMA) accelerates the chloromethylation of the divinylbenzene (DVB)-crosslinked styrene-MMA copolymer. As the MMA content increased in the styrene-MMA copolymers, the chloromethylation was enhanced. Complete chloromethylation was obtained at about 25% MMA content.

  • Styrene is broadly used as a polymer and a copolymer and is useful in manufacturing contact lenses due to its high refractive index. This study used styrene with the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) for copolymerization. Measurement of the physical characteristics of the copolymerized material showed that the refractive index is 1.4412 - 1.4628, water content 20 - 35%, visible transmittance 82.6 - 87% and the tensile strength 0.143 - 0.344 Kgf. Also, measurements showed that the refractive index and tensile strength increased while the water content decreased as the ratio of styrene increased. Based on the results of this study, the produced copolymer can be estimated to be suitable for use as a material for high performance functional contact lenses.

  • This research is carried out to analyze the effects of Styrene and PVP on the properties of silicone hydrogel lenses. Styrene group and PVP(Polyvinylpyrrolidone) are used as additives for a basic combination containing silicone monomer, TSMA(trimethylsilyl methacrylate) and DMA(n,n-dimethylacrylamide) added to the mix at ratios of 1~10 %. Silicone hydrogel lens is produced by cast-mold method. The polymerized lens sample is hydrated in a 0.9 % saline solution for 24 hours before its optical and physical characteristics are measured. Measurement of the physical characteristics of the produced material shows that the refractive index is 1.3682~1.4321, water content 77.11~45.73 %, visible light transmittance 95.14~88.20 %, and tensile strength 0.0652~0.3113 kgf. The results show a decrease of refractive index as the ratio of additives and water content decreases. The result of the stabilization test of polymerization show an increase of extractables along with increase of the ratio of additives, but the difference is not significant for all samples, so it can be judged that the stabilization of the polymer is maintained. Therefore, the additions of styrene and PVP should be taken into consideration for their effects on the physical properties of silicone hydrogel lens.

  • In order to investigate the physical properties of rubber blend compound, this experiment was carried out on the cure rate, loss tangent, reinforcement and abrasion properties of S-SBR (solution styrene-butadiene rubber) blends containing silane coupled silica and E-SBR (emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber) blends containing carbon black as a model compound. E-SBR blend showed the highest total bound rubber(TBR), while S-SBR blends showed constant TBR level regardless of rubber type. Rapid cure rate was achieved when the styrene and vinyl content of rubber microstructure decreased and TBR content of rubber compounds increased. The modulus as the index of rubber reinforcement showed the linear relation with TBR content. The large amount of PICO loss was observed when the styrene and vinyl content of rubber microstructure increased, while the small amount of PICO loss was observed when the ratio of bu-tadiene increased in the S-SBR blends with silane copuled silica. The high loss tangent at $0^{\circ}C$, the low loss tangent at $60^{\circ}C$, and the large difference of loss tangent were shown in the S-SBR blends with high styrene content compared to E-SBR blend.

  • Photografting reaction onto styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) as a function of monomer concentration, irradiation time and carbon black content has been studied using ultraviolet (UV). Acrylamide and benzophenone are used as monomer and photoinitiator, respectively. FT-IR ATR and static contact angle analysis using distilled water are used to measure the graft ratio of acrylamide onto SBR surface. Graft ratio of acrylamide increases with acrylamide concentration and irradiation time and contact angle tends to decrease with increasing graft ratio. It is observed that graft ratio increases with carbon black content.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of the emulsifier ratio on the properties of the polymer cement mortars based on styrene-butyl acrylate (S/BA) latexes, and to obtain necessary basic data to develop appropriate latexes for cement modifiers. The polymer dispersions for cement modifiers was synthesized using styrene and butyl acrylate. Polymer cement mortars based on S/BA latexes were prepared with various monomer and emulsifier ratios, and their water-cement ratio, air content, flexural and compressive strengths, water absorption and chloride ion penetration were tested. From the test results, the maximum flexural and compressive strengths of polymer cement mortars based on S/BA latexes were obtained at a bound styrene content of 60% and an emulsifier ratio of 6%. Also, the water absorption and chloride ion penetration depth are greatly affected by the polymer-cement ratio rather than the bound styrene and emulsifier content. Accordingly, it is judged that S/BA latexes can be used place of the conventional polymer dispersions of cement modifier.
