Methods: This research targeted four urban and four rural high schools in two cities. The study subjects were 1,114 students in urban area and 968 students in rural area, total 2,082 students. The survey was conducted from July 1, 2009 to July 31, 2009. For statistical analysis, chi-square test, t-test and ANOVA were used for investigating related factors with suicide ideation in urban and rural areas, respectively, with multiple logistic regression for multivariate analysis. Results: The results showed that 38.8% of respondents had suicide ideation within 1 year. The percentage of female students (44.8%) was significantly higher than that of male students (33.4%). However, there was no significant difference between urban (38.0%) and rural area (39.9%). The significant influencing factors on suicide ideation in multiple logistic regression were gender [female student OR(odds ratio)=1.80 (95% CI 1.31-2.47) compared with male student] and grade [second year OR=1.40 (95% CI 0.98-2.00), third year OR=2.15 (95% CI 1.49-3.12) compared with first year] in urban area. Those in rural area were gender [female student OR(odds ratio)=2.71 (95% CI 1.23-2.38) compared with male student], economic deterioration [yes OR=1.81 (95% CI 1.24-2.64) compared with no], and grade [second year OR=2.80 (95% CI 1.82-4.32), third year OR=3.84 (95% CI 2.52-5.87) compared with first year]. Conclusions: This study showed about 40% of high school students had suicide ideation within 1 year. A suicide prevention program may be implemented considering factors related with suicide ideation identified in this study.

Furthermore most of high school students in Korea have to study under the great duress. Some of them who can't overcome the academic stress finalize their life by suiciding. A study has found that it is one of the leading causes of stimulating the thought of committing suicide in Korean high school students. So it is necessary to reduce the high school student's suicide rate. Main content of this research is to implement a personalized music recommendation system. Music therapy can help the student deal with the stress, anxiety and depression problems. Proposed system works as a therapist. The music choice and duration of the music is adjusted based on the student's current emotion recognized automatically from EEG. If the happy emotion is not induced by the current music, the system would automatically switch to another one until he or she feel happy. Proposed system is personalized brain music treatment that is making a brain training application running on smart phone or pad. That overcomes the critical problems of time and space constraints of existing brain training program. By using this brain training program, student can manage the stress easily without the help of expert.

  • Purpose: The suicide rate of adolescents in Korea is increasing annually. Therefore, this research was done to identify the suicide attempt rate of middle and high school students and to identify factors that influence suicidal attempts. Methods: The Korea Youth Health Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2007) was used as data. Discriminant analysis and logistic regression were performed to analyze the data depending on gender to consider the gender difference in assessing the influence of each independent variable on suicidal attempts. Results: Discriminant analysis according on gender showed that 13 factors correlated with suicidal attempts for boys, and 20 factors for girls. The most highly correlated factors were smoking, depression and inhalation experience. For inhalation experience, boys had 2.7 times higher possibility of suicide attempts (95% CI 1.8-3.0) and girls, a 2.4 times higher possibility (95% CI 1.7-3.5). Conclusion: The results of the study indicate a need to classify adolescents for expectation of suicide risk and high danger for suicidal attempts through, and introduce suicide prevention programs for these adolescents. In particular, it is necessary to start intervention with students who smoke, have sexual and inhalation experiences and high levels of depression.

  • This study is a secondary data analysis study using the 1st Panel Survey of School Dropouts in Korea for investigating predictors of suicide attempts in out-of-school youths (OSYs). Data analysis were performed using the SPSS 26.0 statistical program. Suicide attempts were reported in 62 (8%) of the 776 participants included in the study. Logistic regression analysis revealed that suicide attempts before school dropout (OR=10.66), experience of violence victimization (OR=6.97), alcohol consumption (OR=3.73), depression (OR=2.62), parental attachment (OR=0.47), peer relationships (OR=0.63) before school dropout were significant predictors of suicide attempts. Prevention of suicide attempts by OSYs should be preceded by confirmation of their experience in suicide attempts before school dropout. In addition, it is required to establish a suicide prevention program considering psychological situations, interpersonal relationships, and violence experiences.
