This paper introduces a method to determine strut-tie models in reinforced concrete (RC) structures using the evolutionary structural optimization (ESO). Even though strut-tie models are broadly adapted in design of reinforced concrete members subjected to shear and torsion, conventional methods can hardly give correct models in RC members subjected to complex loadings and geometry conditions. In this paper, the basic idea of the ESO method is used to determine more rational strut-tie models. Since an optimum topology of structures, finally obtained by the ESO method, usually represents a truss-like structure, the ESO method can effectively be used in finding the best strut-tie model in RC structures. Several example structures are provided to demonstrate the capability of the proposed method in finding the best strut-tie model of each RC structure and to verify its efficiency in application to real design problems.

Beam-column joints of the skeleton structure can be classified as geometrical D-region, where the assumption of Bernoulli is not applicable. For the detailing of D-region in concrete structure, "Strut-and-Tie' Model is a very powerful tool, which has been widely used by practical engineers. This paper shows how the methodology of Strut-and-Tie Model can be applied for the various cases of beam-column joints. We can find this mechanical model does not give only an appropriate answer to the given problem but also a better insight to the structral behavior of beam-column joints.

This paper describes a deformation-based strut-and-tie model for the flexural members at post-yield state. Boundary deformation conditions by flexural post-yield response are chosen in terms of the flexural bar strains as the main factor influenced on the shear strength. The main purpose of the proposed model is to predict the shear capacities of the flexural members associated with the given flexural deformation conditions. To verify the proposed strut-and-tie model, the estimated shear strengths depending on the flexural deformation are compared with the experimental results. The experimental data are in good agreement with the values obtained by the proposed model.

This paper introduces the construction of Strut-Tie model based on the Evolutionary Structural Optimization(ESO) method. Differently from conventional ESO method which uses plane stress elements, the introduced approach adopts the use of truss elements with the fact that the optimum topology of structures by ESO method is open a truss-like structure. Several examples are provided to demonstrate the capability of the proposed method in finding the best Strut-Tie models. In advance, it is shown that the introduced method is supported through the correlation studies between two-dimensional plane stress analysis and Strut-Tie models, and can be used effectively in practice, especially in shear design of complex reinforced concrete members where no previous experience is available.
Previous experimental researches indicate that reinforced concrete beam-column joints play an important role in the mechanical properties of moment resisting frame structures, so as to require proper design. In order to get better understanding of the beam-column joint performance, a rational model needs to be developed. Based on the former considerations, two typical models for calculating the shear carrying capacity of the beam-column joint including the inelastic reinforced concrete joint model and the softened strut-and-tie model are selected to be introduced and analyzed. After examining the applicability of two typical models mentioned earlier to interior beam-column joints, several adjustments are made to get better predicting of the test results. For the softened strut-and-tie model, four adjustments including modifications of the depth of the diagonal strut, the inclination angle of diagonal compression strut, the smeared stress of mild steel bars embedded in concrete, as well as the softening coefficient are made. While two adjustments for the inelastic reinforced concrete joint model including modifications of the confinement effect due to the column axial load and the correction coefficient for high concrete are made. It has been proved by test data that predicted results by the improved softened strut-and-tie model or the modified inelastic reinforced concrete joint model are consistent with the test data and conservative. Based on the test results, it is also not difficult to find that the improved beam-column joint model can be used to predict the joint carrying capacity and cracks development with sufficient accuracy.

For the reliable design of the structural concrete by the strut-tie model approaches of current design codes, the effective strengths of concrete struts must be determined with sufficient accuracy. Many values and equations for the effective strengths have been suggested until now. As those are for the two-dimensional concrete struts, however, it is inappropriate to employ them in the strut-tie model designs of three-dimensional structural concretes. In this study, an approach, that determines the effective strengths of three-dimensional concrete struts consistently and accurately by reflecting the state of 3-dimensional stresses, the 3-dimensional failure criteria of concrete, the degree of cracks (or tensile strains of reinforcing bars crossing the struts), the strut's longitudinal length, the deviation angle between strut orientation and compressive principal stress flow, compressive strength of concrete, and the degree of concrete confinement by reinforcing bars, is proposed. To examine the validity of the proposed approach, the ultimate strength analyses of 115 reinforced concrete pile caps tested to failure by previous investigators were conducted by the ACI 318-11's strut-tie model approach with the existing and proposed effective strengths of concrete struts.

This paper presents a deformable strut-and-tie model of determining the shear strengths and ultimate deformations of the shear-dominant reinforced concrete members. The proposed model originates from the strut-and-tie model concept and satisfies equilibrium, compatibility, constitutive laws, and the geometric conditions of shear deformation. This study attempts to apply deformation patterns to strut-and-tie models. The yielding of flexural reinforcements determines yielding states and the ultimate states of reinforced concrete coupling beam are defined as the ultimate compressive strain of struts and the degradation of compressive strength due to principal tensile strain of struts. The validity and accuracy of the proposed model is then tested against available experimental data. The parameters reviewed include the ratios of truss action and arch action, the reinforcement ratios, and the shear span-depth ratio. It is expected that this model can be applied to displacement-based design methods.

This paper represents the investigation of the shear fatigue behavior and damage procedure of reinforced concrete beams subject to repeated loading using the strut-tie model. Damage Index is defined as the ratio of deflection at each cycle to the ultimate deflection of inelastic region. Two types of strut-tie model are designed according to the inclined angles of concrete-struts and the consideration of concrete-ties. In one model, aggregate interlock and resistance of uncracked concrete are regarded as the main sheat resisting mechanism and in the other, stirrup is. The results show that the strut-tie model combined with damage index can describe the shear fatigue behavior of RC beams subject to repeated loading effectively.

In this study, a statically simple indeterminate strut-tie model is proposed for the rational analysis and design of simply supported prestressed concrete beams by reflecting all characteristics of nonlinear structural behavior and load transfer mechanisms. In addition, a load distribution ratio that allows to transform the proposed indeterminate strut-tie model to a determinate model is also suggested to help structural designers conduct the structural analysis and design of simply supported prestressed concrete beams by using the strut-tie model method of current design codes. For verifying of the validity of the proposed model and load distribution ratio, the ultimate strengths of 47 simply supported prestressted concrete beams tested to failure were estimated and the results were compared with those by the strut-tie model methods of current design codes.
