  • Electrical wire explosion in liquid media is a promising method for producing metallic nanopowders. It is possible to obtain high-purity metallic nanoparticles and uniform-sized nanopowder with excellent dispersion stability using this electrical wire explosion method. In this study, Ni-Fe alloy nanopowders with core-shell structures are fabricated via the electrical explosion of Ni-Fe alloy wires 0.1 mm in diameter and 20 mm in length in de-ionized water. The size and shape of the powders are investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and laser particle size analysis. Phase analysis and grain size determination are conducted by X-ray diffraction. The result indicate that a core-shell structured Ni-Fe nanopowder is synthesized with an average particle size of approximately 28 nm, and nanosized Ni core particles are encapsulated by an Fe nanolayer.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effect of clinical clerkship-associated achievements, such as performance of procedures at the student clinic, observation, and attitude towards a clerkship, on the objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) scores of dental students graduating in restorative dentistry. Materials and Methods: The OSCEs consisted of two stations designed to assess students' clinical skills regarding cavity preparation for a class II gold inlay and a class IV composite restoration. The clerkship achievements, consisting of the number of student clinical procedures performed, observation-related OSCE, and scores of their attitudes towards a conservative dentistry clerkship, were assessed. Correlation and multiple regression analyses were conducted. Results: The correlation coefficient between the OSCE scores for cavity preparation for a class II gold restoration and clerkship attitude scores was 0.241 (p < 0.05). Regarding a class IV composite restoration, OSCE scores showed statistically significant correlations with the observation (r = 0.344, p < 0.01) and attitude (r = 0.303, p < 0.01) scores. In a multiple regression analysis, attitudes towards a clerkship (p = 0.033) was associated with the cavity preparation for a class II gold inlay OSCE scores, while the number of procedure observations (p = 0.002) was associated with the class IV composite restoration OSCE scores. Conclusions: The number of clinical procedures performed by students, which is an important requirement for graduation, showed no correlation with either of the OSCEs scores.

  • In this study, medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) metabolized in the liver for quick energy and CLA exhibited biological activity were used for synthesis of structured lipids (SLs). SLs were synthesized by acidolysis of soybean oil, capric acid (C10:0) and CLA with Chirazyme L-2 lipase as biocatalysts. The effect of enzyme load (2, 4, 6, 8, 10% w/w substrates) was investigated. Production of SL (scale-up) was performed with a 1:2:2 molar ratio (oi1/C10:0/CLA) for 24 h at 55$^{\circ}C$ in a stirred batch reactor (420 rpm). The reaction was catalyzed by Chirazyme L-2 lipase (24.48g, 4% w/w substrates). The scale-up result showed that capric acid and total CLA were incorporated 4.9%, 4.1% (mole%), respectively, in soybean oil. Then, physio-chemical property and flavor characteristic of produced SL-soybean oil were analyzed. Therefore, SL-soybean oil containing C10:0 and CLA was successfully synthesized and may be beneficial in desirable food and nutritional applications.

  • One of the methods to simplify the design process for a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is to reduce the number of variables representing the rule antecedent. This in turn decreases the number of control rules, membership functions, and scaling factors. For this purpose, we designed a single-input FLC that uses a sole fuzzy input variable. However, it is still deficient in the capability of adapting some varying operating conditions although it provides a simple method for the design of FLC's. We here design two simple-structured adaptive fuzzy logic controllers (SAFLC's) using the concept of the single-input FLC. Linguistic fuzzy control rules are directly incorporated into the controller by a fuzzy basis function. Thus some parameters of the membership functions characterizing the linguistic terms of the fuzzy control rules can be adjusted by an adaptive law. In our controllers, center values of fuzzy sets are directly adjusted by an adaptive law. Two SAFLC's are designed. One of them uses a Hurwitz error dynamics and the other a switching function of the sliding mode control (SMC). We also prove that 1) their closed-loop systems are globally stable in the sense that all signals involved are bounded and 2) their tracking errors converge to zero asymptotically. We perform computer simulations using a nonlinear plant.

  • In this study, pool boiling performance of a structured enhanced tube for a flooded refrigerant evaporator was experimentally investigated. Tests were performed for three different refrigerants(R-11, R-123, R-l34a). Compared with the heat transfer coefficients of the smooth tube, the heat transfer coefficients of the enhanced tube were 6.6 times larger for R-11, 6.0 times larger for R-123 and 3.5 times larger for R-l34a, which are comparable with the performance of foreign products. The heat transfer coefficients of R-l34a was higher than those of R-11 or R-123, both for the enhanced tube and for the smooth tube. At 4.4$^\circ$C saturation temperature, however, the heat transfer coefficients of R-l34a was approximately the same as those of R-11. The effect of the saturation pressure on the boiling performance was similar to that of the smooth tube-the heat transfer coefficient increased as the saturation pressure increased.

  • This study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of a visual servoing-based paired structured light (SL) robot for estimating structural displacement under various external loads. The former paired SL robot, which was proposed in the previous study, was composed of two screens facing with each other, each with one or two lasers and a camera. It was found that the paired SL robot could estimate the translational and rotational displacement each in 3-DOF with high accuracy and low cost. However, the measurable range is fairly limited due to the limited screen size. In this paper, therefore, a visual servoing-based 2-DOF manipulator which controls the pose of lasers is introduced. By controlling the positions of the projected laser points to be on the screen, the proposed robot can estimate the displacement regardless of the screen size. We performed various simulations and experimental tests to verify the performance of the newly proposed robot. The results show that the proposed system overcomes the range limitation of the former system and it can be utilized to accurately estimate the structural displacement.

  • Purpose: To describe the knowledge and attitudes of nursing college students and non-nursing college students toward HIV/AIDS for use in the development of an effective HIV/AIDS education program. Method: The data were collected from 165 nursing college students and 92 non-nursing college students using a structured questionnaire, and then analyzed by $X^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Compared to previous research, the score of some items of the knowledge and attitudes toward HIV/AIDS improved. However, the score of several items of the knowledge and attitudes toward HIV/AIDS needs further improvement. In both groups of college student, total attitudes toward HIV/AIDS were correlated with total knowledge of HIV/AIDS. Conclusion: Although some knowledge and attitudes toward HIV/AIDS improved comparing to previous research, a more specifically structured education program is needed. The development of a the program to increase the attitudes toward HIV/AIDS patients is critical.

  • In this paper, we propose some parallel structures of the word-based nonlinear combining functions in word-based stream cipher, high-speed versions of general (bit-based) nonlinear combining functions. Especially, we propose the high-speed structures of popular four kinds in word-based nonlinear combiners using by PS-WFSR (Parallel-Shifting or Parallel-Structured Word-based FSR): m-parallel word-based nonlinear combiner without memory, m-parallel word-based nonlinear combiner with memories, m-parallel word-based nonlinear filter function, and m-parallel word-based clock-controlled function. In addition, we propose an implementation example of the m-parallel word-based DRAGON stream cipher, and determine its cryptographic security and performance.

  • Shader instructions and Compiler are designed for supporting 3D graphic shader 3.0 API. Variable-length instructions are proposed to reduce the size of hardware of graphic processor in SIMD structure by shortening the length of instructions. The designed shader compiler supports variable and two phased structured instructions, and can be programmable at ESSL level. Conformance Test proposed by Khronos group is accomplished to verify the design result of instructions and complier. The test result shows overall average 37% performance improvement at the 16 functions of basic GL shader.
