In the present paper, dynamic characteristics and vibration control performance of a cylindrical shell structure are experimentally investigated and results are presented in the air and underwater conditions. End-capped cylindrical shell structure is manufactured and macro-fiber composite(MFC) actuators are attached on the inside-surface of the structure. Modal characteristics are studied in the air and under the water conditions and then equation of motion of the structure is derived from the test results. Structural vibration control performances of the proposed structure are evaluated via experiments with optimal control algorithm. Vibration control performances are presented both in the frequency and time domains.
Multipurpose development of the coast and ocean can be considered as multifunction construction combining the functions of coastal protection, waterfront amenity and creation or rehabilitation of habitats. Multfunction development of coastal and ocean spaces can be accomplished by applying the ecosystem control structure of artificial habitats which will cultivate fishing ground with ecological harmony to the coastal protection system. To evaluate the applicability of ecosystem control structures as as fundamental coastal protection structure, wave control function of the structure is studied by numerical and physical analyses. Dimensional analysis and hydraulic experiment point out the importance of width and crest depth of ecosystem control structure, construction water depth and wave steepness. Wave control efficiency is estimated by the attenuation coefficient $(K_H)$ according to wave steepness $(H_0/L_0)$, relative constructed water depth $(h_i/H_0)$, relative berm width $(B/L_0)$ and relative crest depth $(h_B/H_0)$ of eosystem control structure. Empirical fomulas are suggested based on the results of model test by applying the multiple model based on this experimental results and numerical wave shoaling-dissipation-breaking model appears to be valid for the analysis of wave transformation around ecosystem control structure in the coastal waters.

This paper proposes an optimum design method of structural and control systems, using a 2-D truss structure as an example. The structure is subjected to initial static loads and disturbances. For the structure, a FEM model is formed. Using modal transformation, the equation of motion is transformed into modal coordinates, in order to decrease D.O.F. of the FEM model. To suppress the effect of the disturbances, the structure is controlled by an output feedback $H_{\infty}$ controller. The design variables of the combined optimal design of the control-structure systems are the cross sectional areas of truss members. The structural objective function is the structural weight. The control objective function is the $H_{\infty}$ norm, the performance index of control. The second structural objective function is the energy of the response related to the initial state, which is derived from the time integration of the quadratic form of the state in the closed-loop system. In a numerical example, simulations have been perform. Through the consideration of structural weight and $H_{\infty}$ norm, an advantage of the combined optimum design of structural and control systems is shown. Moreover, since the performance index of control is almost nearly optimiz, we can acquire better design of structural strength.
Due to the fact that the set point regulation scheme by the variable structure control method concerns only the initial and final locations of a manipulator, many constraints may exist in the application of path tracking with obstracle avoidance. The variable structure parameter should be selected in the trajectory planning step by satisfying the constraints of the travel time and the path deviations This paper presents the selection algorithm of the variable structure parameters with the constraints of the system dynamics and the travel time and the path deviation. This study makes unify the trajectory planning and tracking control using the variable structure control method.

The seismic analysis of structures without applying the effects of soil can undermine functional objectives of structure so that it can affect all the desired purposes at the design and control stages of the structure. In this research, employing OpenSees and MATLAB software simultaneously and developing a definite three-dimensional finite element model of a high-rise concrete structure, designed using performance-based plastic design approach, the performance of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) and Active Mass Damper (AMD) is both examined and compared. Moreover some less noted aspects such as nonlinear interaction of soil and structure, uplift, nonlinear behavior of structure and structural torsion have received more attention. For this purpose, the analysis of time history on the structural model has been performed under 22 far-field accelerogram records. Examining a full range of all structural seismic responses, including lateral displacement, acceleration, inter-story drift, lost plastic energy, number of plastic hinges, story shear force and uplift. The results indicate that TMD performs better than AMD except for lateral displacement and inter-story drift to control other structural responses. Because on the one hand, nonlinear structural parameters and soil-structure interaction have been added and on the other hand, the restriction on the control force applied that leads up to saturation phenomenon in the active control system affect the performance of AMD. Moreover, the control force applied by structural control system has created undesirable acceleration and shear force in the structure.
A structure-control combined optimal design problem is discussed taking a 3-D truss structure as a design object. We use descriptor forms for a controlled object and a generalized plant because the structural parameters appear naturally in these forms. We consider not only minimum weight design problem for structure system, but also suppression problem of the effect of disturbances for control system as the purpose of the design. A numerical example shows the validity of combined optimal design of structure and control systems. We also consider the validity of sensor-actuator collocation for control system design in this paper.
In this paper, we consider the problem of designing a simple learning variable structure system for repeatable tracking control of robot manipulators. We combine a variable structure control law as the robust part for stabilization and a feedforward learning law as the intelligent part for nonlinearity compensation. We show that the tracking error asymptotically converges to zero. Finally, we give computer simulation results in order to show the effectiveness of our method.
A reduction of the response of irregular structures subjected to earthquake excitation by control devices equipped by suitable control algorithm is proposed in this paper. The control algorithm, which is used, is the pole placement one. A requirement of successful application of pole placement algorithm is a definition-selection of suitable poles (eigen-values) of controlled irregular structures. Based on these poles, the required action is calculated and applied to the irregular structure by means of control devices. The selection of poles of controlled irregular structure, is a critical issue for the success of the algorithm. The calculation of suitable poles of controlled irregular structure is proposed herein by the following procedure: a fictitious symmetrical structure is considered from the irregular structure, adding vertical elements, such as columns or shear walls, at any location where is necessary. Then, the eigen-values of symmetrical structure are calculated, and are forced to be the poles of irregular controlled structure. Based on these poles and additional damping, the new poles of the controlled irregular structure are calculated. By pole placement algorithm, the feedback matrix is obtained. Using this feedback matrix, control forces are calculated at any time during the earthquake, and are applied to the irregular structure by the control devices. This procedure results in making the controlled irregular structure to behave like a symmetrical one. This control strategy can be applied to one storey or to multi-storey irregular buildings. Furthermore, the numerical results were shown that with small amount of control force, a sufficient reduction of the response of irregular buildings is achieved.
This paper will describe the application for variable structure control theory to the first order dynamic system and verify it's robustness. The study on the first order dynamic system control which has been essential part for the control of servo motor (AC, DC) systems has been excluded in the study of variable structure control system(VSCS) because this first order system was not applicable to the previous variable structure control theory. So, for the robustness control of first order dynamic system with variable structure control theory, we propose modified switching function synthesis which guarantees the advantages of conventional VSCS and removes reaching phase which regards as shortcomings in VSCS. And we demonstrate the practical potential of implementation about this theory by simulation results of AC motor variable speed control.
