  • Dynamic analysis of concrete gravity dam-reservoir systems is an important topic in the study of fluid-structure interaction problems. It is well-known that the rigorous approach for solving this problem relies heavily on employing a two-dimensional semi-infinite fluid element. The hyper-element is formulated in frequency domain and its application in this field has led to many especial purpose programs which were demanding from programming point of view. In this study, a technique is proposed for dynamic analysis of dam-reservoir systems in the context of pure finite element programming which is referred to as the wavenumber approach. In this technique, the wavenumber condition is imposed on the truncation boundary or the upstream face of the near-field water domain. The method is initially described. Subsequently, the response of an idealized triangular dam-reservoir system is obtained by this approach, and the results are compared against the exact response. Based on this investigation, it is concluded that this approach can be envisaged as a great substitute for the rigorous type of analysis.

  • This paper investigates the effect of different flow models on the Pre-Swirl-Stator structural response from the perspective of a non-existing unified design procedure. Due to viscous effects near the propeller plane, the hydrodynamic solution is calculated by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Three different models are analysed: without the propeller, with the actuator disk and with the propeller. The main intention of this paper is to clarify the effects of the propeller model on the structural stresses in calm-water and waves which include the ship motion. CFD simulations are performed by means of OpenFOAM, while the structural response is calculated by means of the Finite Element Method (FEM) solver NASTRAN. Calm-water results have shown the inclusion of the propeller necessary from the design perspective, while the wave simulations have shown negligible propeller influence on the resulting stresses arising from the ship motions.

  • An Oscillating Water Column (OWC) is a relatively practical and convenient device that converts wave energy to a usable form, which is electricity. The OWC is kept inside a fixed truncated vertical cylinder, which is a hollow structure with one open end submerged in the water and with an air turbine at the top. This research adopts potential theory and Galerkin methods to solve the fluid motion inside the OWC. Using an air-water interaction model, OWC design for energy extraction from regular wave is also explored. The hydrodynamic coefficients of the scattering and radiation potentials are solved for using the Galerkin approximation. The numerical results for the free surface elevation have been verified by a series of experiments conducted in the University of New Orleans towing tank. The effect of varying geometric parameters on the response amplitude operator (RAO) of the OWC is studied and modification of the equation for evaluating the natural frequency of the OWC is made. Using the model of air-water interaction under certain wave parameters and OWC geometric parameters, a computer program is developed to calculate the energy output from the system.

  • The flow fields around the HARTII rotor were numerically investigated using a viscous flow solver on adaptive unstructured meshes. An overset mesh and a deforming mesh technique were used to handle the blade motion including blade deflection, which was obtain from the HARTII experimental data. A solution-adaptive mesh refinement technique was also used to capture the rotor wake effectively. Comparison of the sectional normal force and pitching moment at 87% radial station between the two cases, with and without the blade deflection, showed that the blade loading is significantly affected by blade torsion. It was found that as the mesh was refined, the strength of tip vortex is better preserved, and the magnitude of high frequency blade loading, caused by blade-vortex interaction (BVI), is further magnified. It was also found that a proper time step size, which corresponds to the cell size, should be used to predict unsteady solutions accurately. In general, the numerical results in terms of the unsteady blade loading and the rotor wake show good agreement with the experimental data.

  • Exploring the basic concepts for the design of CO2-philic molecules is important due to the possibility for “green” chemistry in supercritical CO2 as substitute solvent systems. The Lewis acid-base interactions and C?H…O weak hydrogen bonding were suggested as two key factors for the solubility of CO2-philic molecules. We have performed high level quantum mechanical calculations for the van der Waals complexes of CO2 with trimethylphosphate and trimethylphosphine oxide, which have long been used for metal extractants in supercritical CO2 fluid. Structures and energies were calculated using the MP2/6-31+G(d) and recently developed multilevel methods. These studies indicate that the Lewis acid-base interactions have larger impact on the stability of structure than the C?H…O weak hydrogen bonding. The weak hydrogen bonds in trimethylphosphine oxide have an important role to the large supercritical CO2 solubility when a metal is bound to the oxygen atom of the P=O group. Trimethylphosphate has many Lewis acid-base interaction sites so that it can be dissolved into supercritical CO2 easily even when it has metal ion on the oxygen atom of the P=O group, which is indispensable for a good extractant.

  • Exhaust system of steam turbines consists of an annular diffuser and a collector and connects the last stage turbine and the condenser. The system is used to transfer the turbine leaving kinetic energy to potential energy while guiding the flow from turbine exit plane to the downstream condenser. In the steam turbine exhaust system, distorted pressure profile is arisen by the nonaxisymmetric collector structure at the diffuser outlet, and this distorted pressure is propagated to the last stage LP turbine exit plane through the diffuser, then the last stage LP turbine experiences asymmetric back pressure. It is known that the pressure recovery performance of diffuser is strongly influenced by diffuser inflow condition. In this study, the effect of exhaust system due to the changing of inlet flow condition is observed by using CFD, and the interaction of last stage LP turbine and exhaust system is investigated by using actuator disk model as modeling of turbine blade row of exhaust hood inlet.

  • Liquid fluctuation called sloshing within liquid-storage tank gives rise to the significant effect on the dynamic stability of tank. This liquid sloshing can be effectively suppressed by installing baffles within the tank, and the suppression effect depends strongly on the design parameters of baffle like the baffle configuration. The present study is concerned with the parametric evaluation of the sloshing suppression effect for the CNG-storage tank, a next generation liquefied fuel for vehicles, to the major design parameters of baffle, such as the baffle configuration, the installation angle and height, the hole size of baffle. The coupled FEM-FVM analysis was employed to effectively reflect the interaction between the interior liquid flow and the tank elastic deformation.

  • This paper presents a dam-reservoir interaction model that includes, water compressibility, sloshing of surface water, and radiation damping at the far-end reservoir, to investigate the influence of concrete deterioration on seismic behavior along with seismic performance of gravity dams. Investigations on seismic performance of the dam body have been conducted using the linear time-history responses obtained under six real and 0.3 g normalized earthquake records with time durations from 10 sec to 80 sec. The deterioration of concrete is assumed to develop due to mechanical and chemical actions over the dam lifespan. Several computer programs have been developed in FORTRAN 90 and MATLAB programming languages to analyze the coupled problem considering two-dimensional (2D) plane-strain condition. According to the results obtained from this study, the dam structure shows critical responses at the later ages (75 years) that could cause disastrous consequences; the critical effects of some earthquake loads such as Chi-Chi with 36.5% damage and Loma with 56.2% damage at the later ages of the selected dam body cannot be negligible; and therefore, the deterioration of concrete along with its effects on the dam response should be considered in analysis and design.
