  • Work on fracture mechanics has provided a technical basis for elimination of main coolant loop double ended guillotine breaks from the structural design basis of reactor coolant system. Without main coolant loop pipe breaks, the tributary pipe breaks must be considered as design bases until further fracture mechanics work could eliminate some of these breaks from design consideration. This paper determines the core support barrel shell responses for the 3 inch pressurizer spray line nozzle break which is expected to be the only inlet break remaining in the primary side after leak-before-break evaluation is extended to smaller size pipes in the near future. The responses are compared with those due to 14 inch safety injection nozzle break and main coolant loop pipe break. The results show that, when the leak-before-break concept is applied to the primary side piping systems with a diameter of 10 inches or over, the core support barrel shell responses due to pipe breaks in the primary side are negligible for the faulted condition design.

  • Traffic load and volume is one of the most important physical quantities for bridge safety evaluation and maintenance strategies formulation. This paper aims to conduct the statistical analysis of traffic volume information and the multimodal modeling of gross vehicle weight (GVW) based on the monitoring data obtained from the weigh-in-motion (WIM) system instrumented on the arch Jiubao Bridge located in Hangzhou, China. A genetic algorithm (GA)-based mixture parameter estimation approach is developed for derivation of the unknown mixture parameters in mixed distribution models. The statistical analysis of one-year WIM data is firstly performed according to the vehicle type, single axle weight, and GVW. The probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the GVW data of selected vehicle types are then formulated by use of three kinds of finite mixed distributions (normal, lognormal and Weibull). The mixture parameters are determined by use of the proposed GA-based method. The results indicate that the stochastic properties of the GVW data acquired from the field-instrumented WIM sensors are effectively characterized by the method of finite mixture distributions in conjunction with the proposed GA-based mixture parameter identification algorithm. Moreover, it is revealed that the Weibull mixture distribution is relatively superior in modeling of the WIM data on the basis of the calculated Akaike's information criterion (AIC) values.

  • Records of accidents for buried pipeline across the river were gathered and causes were analysed. The results are intended to be utilized as basic data for determining a reasonable criteria for the depth of buried city gas pipeline crossing the river. Accident of river-crossing buried pipeline was mainly caused by flood. Sometimes corrosion was detected at the failed location of the pipe. In order to determine reasonable and efficient depth of burial of the pipeline, hydraulic evaluation of the river and structural analysis of the pipeline are necessary. Published data for the buried natural gas pipeline incidents were also investigated and summarized. Main causes of buried natural gas pipeline incidents were external interference and corrosion. However, the two main causes of incidents showed significant difference in the proportion of the entire incident, depending on burial environment.

  • In order to verify that the recently proposed two-parameters site classification system and the corresponding site coefficients are suitable for the local geological conditions in Korea, a comparison was conducted with current Korean seismic code, Eurocode-8, NYC DOT seismic code. The design spectrum of the current Korean seismic code is significantly amplified in the long-period range, whereas the other response spectra, including the proposed two-parameters approach, are significantly amplified in the short-period range, which is a typical geological condition in Korea. In addition, based on the results of site response analyses in the specific $10km{\times}10km$ area of Gyeongju, spatial distributions of site coefficients from site-specific seismic response analyses were compared with the proposed site coefficients, as well as those specified in the current Korean seismic code. The site coefficients ($F_a$ and $F_v$) from the current Korean seismic codes show significantly high spatial error distributions compared with those specified by the two-parameters site classification system. Therefore, the proposed system is suitable for regions of shallow bedrock including the Korean peninsula.

  • Following the companion paper (I. Comparisons with Well-known Seismic Code and Site Response Characteristics), several acceleration data recorded during recent earthquake events in Korea were analyzed to verify the suitability of the proposed two-parameters site classification system and the corresponding site coefficients. For all of rock-soil site pairs less than 30 km distant, response spectrums and corresponding site coefficients, $F_a$ and $F_v$, were determined. Unfortunately, some of data have an eccentric error, where the spectral acceleration of rock site is more amplified than that of soil site. The $F_a$ and $F_v$ for all of pairs except the pairs of error were compared with those in the current code and the proposed system. The $F_a$ and $F_v$ from the recorded motions show definitely different trend from that of the current code. In addition, the site coefficients from recorded motions at four 765 kV substation sites, which are several hundred meters distant, have a remarkably similar trend and absolute values to those in proposed two-parameters site classification system. Based on earthquake motions recorded in domestic areas including data from the four 765 kV substation sites, the two-parameters site classification and site coefficients are superior to the results obtained from the current Korean seismic code.

  • The switching system in a maglev train is an indispensable element for distributing train routes, and it should be designed to ensure safe operation. Unlike conventional wheels on rails, the switching track in EMS-type maglev is supported by a group of 3 to 4 steel girders. When the vehicle changes its route, the segmented track allows the girders to change from a straight position to a curved one with a small radius of curvature. Hence, the structural characteristics of the segmented switching system may affect the levitation stability of the maglev vehicle. This study experimentally evaluates the dynamic interaction between maglev vehicles and a segmented switching system. The results may be helpful for improving the switching system. The measured levitation and lateral air gaps were evaluated at a vehicle speed of 25 km/h, and the ride quality of the Maglev vehicle was determined to be "comfortable" according to the UIC 513 standard.

  • In this work, the thermal properties of epoxy coating system on the liner plate in the containment structure of nuclear power plants had been examined by irradiation and design basis accident (DBA) conditions. The effect of immersion in hot water on adhesion strength of the coating system had been also studied. The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and thermal stability of ET-5290/carbon steel A 32 epoxy coating systems were measured by DSC and TGA analyses, respectively. Contact angle measurements were used to determine the effect of immersion on the surface energetics of epoxy coating system, with a viewpoint of surface free energy. Adhesion tests were also executed to evaluate the adhesion strength at interfaces between carbon steel plate and epoxy resins. As a result, it was found that the irradiation led to an improvement of internal crosslinked structure in cured epoxy systems, resulting in significantly increasing the thermal stability, as well as the $T_g$. Also, the immersion in hot water made a role in the post-curing of epoxy resins and increased the mechanical interlocking of the network system, resulting in increasing the adhesion strength of the epoxy coating system.

  • In this study, an innovative steel stair system is presented which enables rapid erection and high quality control in both residential and office building construction. This system features two lightweight steel stringers of box shape, bolted connections easy to absorb construction tolerance, and stair steps movable transversely (or sliding steps) such that the work space needed for concrete stairway wall could be easily provided. In this type of stairway system, other than providing robust connecting details, ensuring vibration performance is especially important since this system may be vibration-sensitive due to lightweight nature and/or probable low damping. To tackle these issues, a series of full-scale mock-up tests were conducted by using box-shape stringer members with or without concrete-fill. The connection system was shown to be sufficiently stiff and strong, or it remained elastic even under the 160% of service load level. Among the seven stringer alternatives, five exhibited satisfactory vibration performance according to the related North American and European acceptance criteria.

  • As computer performance improves, research using deep learning are being actively carried out in various fields. Recently, deep learning technology has been applying to the safety evaluation for structures. In particular, the internal blades of a turbine structure requires experienced experts and considerable time to detect surface damages because of the difficulty of separation of the blades from the structure and the dark environmental condition. This study proposes a Faster R-CNN deep learning model that can detect surface damages on the internal blades, which is one of the primary elements of the turbine structure. The deep learning model was trained using image data with dent and punch damages. The image data was also expanded using image filtering and image data generator techniques. As a result, the deep learning model showed 96.1% accuracy, 95.3% recall, and 96% precision. The value of the recall means that the proposed deep learning model could not detect the blade damages for 4.7%. The performance of the proposed damage detection system can be further improved by collecting and extending damage images in various environments, and finally it can be applicable for turbine engine maintenance.

  • Development of structures such as slope and tunnel, waste disposal, oil and LPG storages, and underground power house and so on, is increasing with the year. The method for appropriate estimation of rock state such as fresh or damaged rocks is also requested with increasing structural development. On these purposes, seismic logging system, which is a simple and easy way for handling as well as small and light, has been developed. Seismic logging method is one of logging tests, which is able to evaluate the state of rock mass with various shapes and is possible to obtain the relatively accuracy data at situ state. In addition, seismic logging method is at to apply to estimate structural behavior, before and after support installed. According to the results obtained from this study, firstly, it is clear that the extent of damage in rock slope due to blasting is able to be evaluated with quantity using seismic logging method, moreover to decide the damage zone in rock slope reasonably. Secondly, it is expected that installing depth of support is able to be decided more effectively and economically, using the results of seismic logging data. Finally, seismic logging method is also able to be applied safety supervision of structures, before and after support installed.
