Structural analysis of a prestressed segmented girder using contact elements in ANSYS

  • Studying the structural behavior of prestressed segmented girders is quite important due to the large use this type of solution in viaducts and bridges. Thus, this work presents a nonlinear three-dimensional structural analysis of an externally prestressed segmented concrete girder through the Finite Element Method (FEM), using a customized ANSYS platform, version 14.5. Aiming the minimization of the computational effort by using the lowest number of finite elements, a new viscoelastoplastic material model has been implemented for the structural concrete with the UPF customization tool of ANSYS, adding new subroutines, written in FORTRAN programming language, to the main program. This model takes into consideration the cracking of concrete in its formulation, being based on fib Model Code 2010, which uses Ottosen rupture surface as the rupture criterion. By implementing this new material model, it was possible to use the three-dimensional 20-node quadratic element SOLID186 to model the concrete. Upon validation of the model, an externally prestressed segmented box concrete girder that was originally lab tested by Aparicio et al. (2002) has been computationally simulated. In the discretization of the structure, in addition to element SOLID186 for the concrete, unidimensional element LINK180 has been used to model the prestressing tendons, as well as contact elements CONTA174 and TARGE170 to simulate the dry joints along the segmented girder. Stresses in the concrete and in the prestressing tendons are assessed, as well as joint openings and load versus deflection diagrams. A comparison between numerical and experimental data is also presented, showing a good agreement.

Finite Element Method for Structural Concrete Based on the Compression Field Theory (압축응력장 이론을 적용한 콘크리트 유한요소법 개발)

  • A finite element formulation based on the CFT(Compression Field Theory) concept such as the effect of compression softening in cracked concrete, and macroscopic and rotating crack models etc. was presented for the nonlinear behaviour of structural concrete. In this category, tangential or secant material stiffnesses for cracked concrete were also defined and discussed in view of the iterative solution schemes for nonlinear equations. Considering the computational efficiency and the ability of modelling the post-ultimate behaviour as major concerns, the incremental displacement solution algorithm involving initial material stiffnesses and the relaxation procedure for fast convergence was adopted and formulated in a type of 8-noded quadrilateral isoparametric elements. The analysis program NASCOM(Nonlinear Analysis of structrual Concrete by FEM : Monotonic Loading) developed baed on the CFT constitutive relationships and the incremetal solution strategy described enables the predictions of strength and deformation capacities in a full range. crack patterns and their corresponding widths, and yield extents of reinforcement. As the verfication purpose of NASCOM, the prediction of Cervenka's panel test results including the load resistance and the deformation history was made. A limited number of predictions indicate a good correlation in a general sense.

Genetic Algorithm Based Optimal Structural Design Method for Cost and CO2 Emissions of Reinforced Concrete Frames (철근콘크리트 모멘트골조의 비용 및 이산화탄소 배출량을 고려한 유전자알고리즘 기반 구조최적화기법)

  • In this study, the genetic algorithm based optimal structural design method is proposed. The objective functions are to minimize the cost and $CO_2$ emissions, simultaneously. The cost and $CO_2$ emissions are calculated based on the cross-sectional dimensions, length, material strength, and reinforcement ratio of beam and column members. Thus, the cost and $CO_2$ emissions are evaluated by using the amounts of concrete and reinforcement used to construct a building. In this study, the cost and $CO_2$ emissions calculated at the phases of material transportation, construction, and building operation are excluded. The constraint conditions on the strength of beam and column members and the inter-story drift ratio are considered. The linear static analysis by using OpenSees is automatically conducted in the proposed method. The genetic algorithm is employed to solve the formulated problem. The proposed method is validated by applying it to the 4-story reinforced concrete moment frame example.

Effects of the Non-linear Stress-Strain Behavior of RAP Concrete on Structural Responses for Rigid Pavement Application (RAP 콘크리트의 비선형 응력-변형률 특성이 강성포장 구조해석에 미치는 영향)

  • PURPOSES : This study is primarily focused on evaluating the effects of the non-linear stress-strain behavior of RAP concrete on structural response characteristics as is applicable to concrete pavement. METHODS : A 3D FE model was developed by incorporating the actual stress-strain behavior of RAP concrete obtained via flexural strength testing as a material property model to evaluate the effects of the non-linear stress-strain behavior to failure on the maximum stresses in the concrete slab and potential performance prediction results. In addition, a typical linear elastic model was employed to analyze the structural responses for comparison purposes. The analytical results from the FE model incorporating the actual stress-strain behavior of RAP concrete were compared to the corresponding results from the linear elastic FE model. RESULTS : The results indicate that the linear elastic model tends to yield higher predicted maximum stresses in the concrete as compared to those obtained via the actual stress-strain model. Consequently, these higher predicted stresses lead to a difference in potential performance of the concrete pavement containing RAP. CONCLUSIONS : Analysis of the concrete pavement containing RAP demonstrated that an appropriate analytical model using the actual stress-strain characteristics should be employed to calculate the structural responses of RAP concrete pavement instead of simply assuming the concrete to be a linear elastic material.

  • A process heat exchanger (PHE) in a nuclear hydrogen system is a key component for transferring the considerable heat generated in a very high temperature reactor (VHTR) to a chemical reaction that yields a large quantity of hydrogen. A performance test on a small-scale PHE prototype made of Hastelloy-X is underway in a small-scale gas loop at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. Previous research on the high-temperature structural analysis of the small-scale PHE prototype had been performed using base material properties. In this study, a high-temperature structural analysis considering the mechanical properties in the weld zone was performed, and the obtained results were compared with those of the previous research.

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine the possibility of weight reduction by changing the partition panel of vehicle from an existing aluminum material to carbon fiber reinforced plastics. Three weaving methods (plain, twill and satin) were used in the manufacture of composite materials, and they were produced and tested to derive their material properties. The analysis model of composite partition panel for torsional conditions was developed and the structural stability and system stiffness were evaluated according to Tsai-Hill failure criteria. With design variables for fiber orientation angles and stacking sequence, evolutional optimal algorithm was performed and as the results, the optimal composite partition panel was designed. In addition, the structural analysis results for strength and specific stiffness were compared with aluminum partition panels and composite partition panels to verify the possibility of weight reduction.

Concrete structural health monitoring using piezoceramic-based wireless sensor networks

  • Impact detection and health monitoring are very important tasks for civil infrastructures, such as bridges. Piezoceramic based transducers are widely researched for these tasks due to the piezoceramic material's inherent advantages of dual sensing and actuation ability, which enables the active sensing method for structural health monitoring with a network of piezoceramic transducers. Wireless sensor networks, which are easy for deployment, have great potential in health monitoring systems for large civil infrastructures to identify early-age damages. However, most commercial wireless sensor networks are general purpose and may not be optimized for a network of piezoceramic based transducers. Wireless networks of piezoceramic transducers for active sensing have special requirements, such as relatively high sampling rate (at a few-thousand Hz), incorporation of an amplifier for the piezoceramic element for actuation, and low energy consumption for actuation. In this paper, a wireless network is specially designed for piezoceramic transducers to implement impact detection and active sensing for structural health monitoring. A power efficient embedded system is designed to form the wireless sensor network that is capable of high sampling rate. A 32 bit RISC wireless microcontroller is chosen as the main processor. Detailed design of the hardware system and software system of the wireless sensor network is presented in this paper. To verify the functionality of the wireless sensor network, it is deployed on a two-story concrete frame with embedded piezoceramic transducers, and the active sensing property of piezoceramic material is used to detect the damage in the structure. Experimental results show that the wireless sensor network can effectively implement active sensing and impact detection with high sampling rate while maintaining low power consumption by performing offline data processing and minimizing wireless communication.

  • The most important factor in the structural design of ships and offshore structures operating in arctic region is ice load, which results from ice-structure interaction during the ice collision process. The mechanical properties of ice related to strength and failure, however, show very complicated aspect varying with temperature, volume fraction of brine, grain size, strain rate and etc. So it is nearly impossible to establish a perfect material model of ice satisfying all the mechanical characteristics completely. Therefore, in general, ice collision analysis was carried out by relatively simple material models considering only specific aspects of mechanical characteristics of ice and it would be the most significant cause of inevitable errors in the analysis. Especially, it is well-known that the most distinctive mechanical property of ice is high dependency on strain rate. Ice shows brittle attribute in higher strain rate while it becomes ductile in lower strain rate range. In this study, the simulation method of ice collision to ship hull using the nonlinear dynamic FE analysis was dealt with. To consider the strain rate effects of ice during ice-structural interaction, strain rate dependent constitutive model in which yield stress and hardening behaviors vary with strain rate was adopted. To reduce the huge amount of computing time, the modeling range of ice and ship structure were restricted to the confined region of interest. Under the various scenario of ice-ship hull collision, the structural behavior of hull panels and failure modes of ice were examined by nonlinear FE analysis technique.

A Numerical Study on the Structural Stability Optimization of the Core Components of a 17cc Automotive Compressor (17cc급 자동차용 압축기 핵심부품의 구조 안정성에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • Fuel economy has always been a major issue for the automotive industry due to environmental concerns. In particular, it is known that only 5-20% of the energy generated in a car that mainly uses an internal combustion engine is converted to increase fuel efficiency, many methods have been proposed. Among these methods, weight reduction is most commonly used because it is the simplest and cheapest. Weight is always the main reason for energy consumption, therefore, reducing weight is the best way to increase fuel efficiency while simultaneously saving on material costs. To reduce the weight of a compressor, material substitution is used. However, aluminum (a lighter metal substitute) is more fragile than steel, therefore, structural stability must be verified through testing. In this paper, we performed a 3D analysis to investigate whether aluminum can be used without compromising structural stability. Our investigation included static analysis and thermal analysis. As a result, we found that an aluminum swash plate can be safely applied on a shaft instead of steel; it reduces weight while maintaining stability that is equal to or better than steel.

A Calibration Method of the CSC Model for Considering Material Properties of Ultra-high Performance Concrete (초고성능 강섬유 보강 콘크리트 물성 반영을 위한 소성 기반 콘크리트 CSC 모델 보정기법)

  • The present study introduces a calibration method of the CSC model implemented in the LS-DYNA program for considering the material properties of ultra-high performance concrete(UHPC). Based on previous experimental studies, various parameters, which constitute three shear failure surfaces, pressure-volumetric strain curve, fracture energy, dynamic increase factor(DIF), and so on, are modified. Then, the proposed calibration method is verified by comparing the numerical result with the experimental data through the single element analysis. In addition, based on the established finite element models, the applicability of the calibrated CSC model is examined for UHPC structures subjected to impact and blast loadings.
