  • A good understanding of the chemical composition and structural characteristics of a carbonaceous material is essential in conversion processes. Understanding how the composition and structural changes influence the burning behaviour of coal is important when assessing a coal's potential for utilization. To explore the potentials of a typical Nigerian coal, both conventional and advanced analytical techniques such as proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, calorific value, surface area analyser, SEM, FTIR, XRD and SAXS were employed. The results obtained from these characterizations agree favourable well with a typical South African coal that is of enormous contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the nation economy.

  • The structural behaviors of circular concrete filled steel tube (CFT) structures are investigated by nonlinear finite element method. An efficient three-dimensional (3D) degenerated beam element is adopted. Based on those previous studies, a modified stress-strain relationship for confined concrete which introduces the influence of eccentricity on confining stress is presented. Updated Lagrange formulation is used to consider the geometrical nonlinearity induced by large deformation effect. The nonlinear behaviors of CFT structures are investigated, and the accuracy of the proposed constitutive model for confined concrete is mainly concerned. The results demonstrate that the confining effect in CFT elements subjected to combining action of axial force and bending moment is far sophisticated than that in axial loaded columns, and an appropriate evaluation about this effect may be important for nonlinear numerical simulation of CFT structures.

  • In this study, the seismic performance of a residential building which was damaged in the 1992 Erzincan (Turkey) Earthquake (Ms = 6.8) is performed. Damages on columns due to short columns are estimated analytically implementing the shear hinges and results are compared with the observed damages on the building after the earthquake. In seismic performance evaluation, a deformation based approach is adopted, whereby the structural behavior under external and seismic loads is evaluated. Furthermore, the effects of short columns formed by band windows in basement floors are investigated analytically. The sizes of band windows are parametrically changed in order to understand the effects of short columns on overall building behavior.

  • Stainless steel wire mesh (SSWM) is an alternative material for strengthening of structural elements similar to fiber reinforced polymer (FRP). Finite element (FE) method based Numerical investigation for evaluation of axial strength of SSWM strengthened plain cement concrete (PCC) and reinforced cement concrete (RCC) columns is presented in this paper. PCC columns of 200 mm diameter with height 400 mm, 800 mm and 1200 mm and RCC columns of diameter 200 mm with height of 1200 mm with different number of SSWM wraps are considered for study. The effect of concrete grade, height of column and number of wraps on axial strength is studied using finite element based software ABAQUS. The results of numerical simulation are compared with experimental study and design guidelines specified by ACI 440.2R-08 and CNR-DT 200/2004. As per numerical analysis, an increase in axial capacity of 15.69% to 153.95% and 52.39% to 109.06% is observed for PCC and RCC columns respectively with different number of SSWM wraps.

  • This study intends to improve the structural details of the anchors in the conventional CFT column-to-foundation connection. To that goal, finite element analysis is conducted with various design variables (number and embedded length of deformed bars, number, aspect ratio, height ratio and thickness ratio of ribs) selected based upon the results of loading test and strength evaluation. The finite element analysis is performed using ABAQUS and the analytical results are validated by comparison with the load-displacement curves obtained through loading test applying axial and transverse loads. The behavioral characteristics of the numerical model according to the selected design variables are verified and the corresponding results are evaluated.

  • Fatigue is a principal failure mode for steel structures, and it is still less understood than any other modes of failure. Fatigue life estimation of metal bridges is a major issue for making cost effective decisions on the rehabilitation or replacement of existing infrastructure. The fatigue design procedures given by the standard codes are either empirical or based on nominal stress approach. Since the fatigue life estimation through field measurements is difficult and costly, more researches are needed to develop promising techniques in the fatigue analysis of bridges through Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This paper aims to develop a methodology for the Fatigue life estimation of railway steel bridge using FEA. The guidelines of IIW-1823-07 were used in the development of the methodology. The Finite Element (FE) package ANSYS and the programming software MATLAB were used to implement this methodology on an Indian Railway Standard (IRS) welded plate girder bridge. The results obtained were compared with results from published literature and found satisfactory.

  • The performance evaluation of existing structures is important to study the safety of those structures with changing the loads over the lifetime of structures. Therefore, this study aims at evaluating the Seong-Su bridge, Seoul, Korea, using structural health monitoring (SHM) system. The static and dynamic tests are used to assess the behavior of the bridge. The statistical and wavelet analyses are used to demonstrate the behavior of the bridge in the time and frequency domains. The previous SHM results are used to assess the bridge performance. The results of this study show that the bridge performance under static and dynamic loads is safe in time and frequency domains.

  • Obelisks are historical monuments. There are several obelisks dating from ancient Egyptian period, located around various parts of the world. The city of Istanbul is a home to the Obelisk of Theodosius at the Hippodrome. Due to the expectation of a large event in the near future, the evaluation of seismic response of the Obelisk gets importance. Therefore, in this study structural dynamic behavior of the Obelisk was investigated using discrete element approach. Nonlinear dynamic analyses were performed using real and synthetic time series. Real and synthetic ground motions analyzed from this study seems consistent with the earthquake hazard levels that would be expected at the site of the Obelisk in the occurrence of an event of moment magnitude above 7.0 near Istanbul. Results are evaluated in terms of variation of displacement, relative displacement of adjacent blocks, normal stress and shear stress in time.

  • In order to develop the compatible damping device in various vibration source, a hybrid wall-type damper combining slit and friction damper in parallel was developed. Cyclic loading tests and two-story RC reinforced frame tests were performed for structural performance verification. As a result of the 5-cyclic loading test according to KBC-2016 and low displacement cyclic fatigue test, The hybrid wall type damper increased its strength and the ductility was the same as that of the slit damper. In addition, As a result of the two-layer frame test, the reinforced frame had about twice the strength of the unreinforced frame, and the story drift ratio was satisfied to Life Safety Level.
