  • The selective chemical degradation or etching of PET based on an organic amine attack on the ester group. The techniques involves the chemical removal of loss ordered amorphous regions or crystalline regions, which are essentially unaffected by the degradative etchant. Thus, most of previous studies have limited to consideration which has been given to structural changes taking place. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate surface characterization, dyeing properties of PET film hydrazinolyzed with hydrazine hydrate in methanol. PET film was treated with 30% hydrazine hydrate in methanol at $30^\circ{C}$ for various time intervals. The total surface tension of treated PET increased, the dispersion force decreased and the hydrogen bonding force increased. The equilibrium dye adsorption, dyeing rate and apparent diffusion coefficient of acid dyes increased, and the apparent activation energies of diffusion decreased.

  • Plastic hardener and softener based ultrasound phantoms were made in various constitutions and their acoustic properties were measured. Speed of sound is approximately $1.4\;mm/{\mu}sec$ in all the phantoms, which is about 7% less than that of in soft tissue. Attenuation coefficient is strongly dependent on the ratio between hardener and softener. In order to achieve the tissue level attenuation (0.5 dB/cm/MHz), 60% of hardener or less is required. The synthesized phantoms can be preserved for more than 6 months without structural degradation.

  • Damage detection based on measured vibration data has received intensive studies recently. Frequently, the damage to a structure may be reflected by a change of some system parameters, such as a degradation of the stiffness. In this paper, we apply a method to nondestructively locate and estimate the severity of damage in corrosion pipeline for which a few natural frequencies or mode shapes are available. The method is based on the strain modal sensitivity ratio (SMSR) and the orthogonality conditions sensitivities (OCS) applied to vibration features identified during the monitoring of the pipeline. The advantage of these methods is that it only requires measuring few modal parameters. The SMSR-based and OCS-based damage detection methods are illustrated using computer-simulated and laboratory testing data. The results show that the current method provides a precise indication of both the location and the extent of corrosion pipeline.

  • New diagnostic techniques have been tried on the applications of chemical, physical and micro-structural methods because there was a limit to diagnose degradation in Korean Underground Residential Distribution (URD) power cables with the conventional electrical methods. In this study, non-electrical properties were carried out as such. Characterization of interface layer was analyzed by X-ray, characterization of insulator by water tree, degree of crosslinking, shrinkage as well as ${\mu}$ -FTIR, characterization of semiconductive layer by volume resistivity. Electrical properties were also performed by leakage current.

  • $\lambda$/4 phase-shifted DFB lasers with nonideal grating structure have been studied by using an effective-index transfer matrix method where material dispersion, vwaveguide dispersion and waveguide-structuredependent loss are taken into consideration. Nonideal grating structure in the center phase-shift region does not incur serous degradation of laser characteristics. Phase-shift error from the ideal shift of $\pi$ causes a decrease in the threshold gain difference and lasing wavelength shift and should be less than $\pi$/4 when residual facet reflectivity is 0.7%. also, positional error of the phase-shift should be less than 9% of the cavity length in order for the threshold gain difference to be decreased less than 10%.

  • Ceramics based on CaTiO₃-NdAlO₃ solid solutions were synthesized in order to study their dielectric microwave properties. Microstructural analysis was performed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) using different analytical methods such as energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS). It was observed that the heating conditions during sintering and cooling strongly affect the microstructural development of CaTiO₃-NdAlO₃-based ceramics. Various types and concentrations of structural defects were identified, for example, dislocations, twins and/or antiphase boundaries. all such defects resulted in a degradation of the dielectric microwave properties, in particular the quality factor Q. Dielectric properties of CaTiO₃-NdAlO₃-based ceramics can be improved by an appropriate thermal treatment of ceramics which results in a decrease in the concentrations of the identified microstructural defects.

  • The solar evaporation method is one of the most important and popular salt manufecturing method in Korea. The rate of evaporation of sea water depends on a complex climate factors. Of these factors, the most important is solar radiation and in particular the extent to which it is absorbed in the brine. By the addition of suitable dyestuff, a further increase in absorption is obtained and can result in all the radiation entering the brine being made available as heat. "Solivap Green", one of several dyestuffs which have been suggested for accelerating solar evaporation, was tested in this experiment. The results of the experiment. 1. Increase the evaporation rate of brine up to 20-25%. 2. Elevate the temperature of brine 2-$4^{\circ}C$. higher than that of brine adding no dyestuff. 3. Optimum dyestuff concentration is 25-30 mg/L and allowable maximum concentration can not exceeded 1000 mg/$m^2$ (50 mg/L). 4. Addition of dyestuff does not cause the degradation of salt produced. 5. A conversion table which indicates the concentrations for various depths of brine was prepared for engineering purpose. 6. Absorption spectrum of the dyestuff was studies, but toxicological and structural studies for the dyestuff have not been done in this experiment.

  • The PCS system, which consists of precast concrete column and steel beam, has been under development. Experimental test has been carried out to investigate the structural performance of the system under earthquake. Two types of test specimens of beam-column joints are designed in order to compare the performances. One is the system with reinforced concrete slab and the other is without slab. It is found that the system with slab could satisfy all of the requirements from ACI Criteria such as strength, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity except initial stiffness. It is also investigated that the stiffness of the joint is belong to rigid joint type according to Bjorhovde criterion. And it is observed that the partial-composite system between beam and slab is more effective than full-composite system in the respect of the energy dissipation capacity of the system.

  • Normally, the degradation of concrete member exposed to fire is largely dependent on the fire scale and fire condition. With all ensuring the fire resistance structure as a method of setting the required cover thickness to fire, the RC is significantly affected from the standpoint of its structural stability that the compressive strength and elastic modulus is reduced by fire. Thus, this study is concerned with experimentally investigating fire resistance of high strength-light weight concrete. From the test result, high strength-light weight concrete is happened explosive spalling. The decrease of cross section caused by explosive spalling made sharp increasing gradient of inner temperature.

  • In many previous studies, a prestressed concrete column has a larger flexural strength, shear strength and restoring force than a RC column. Recently, a precast prestressed concrete column is rising up a very rational column structure in that a economic aspect. In a precast prestressed concrete column, it makes in a factory. So, it needs a small construction site and acquires a higher durability than a cast in place concrete column. Seven precast concrete columns were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load to investigate the performance. It is designed with a hollow section and consisted of 4 segments. The main variables of the test were a amount of prestressed, a type of joints and a boding type of strands. The test results show that the performance of a precast prestressed concrete column; failure mode, maximum load, energy dissipation and stiffness degradation.
