  • The nonprogressive unilateral intracranial arteriopathy known as transient (focal) cerebral arteriopathy is not a well-recognized arteriopathy among practitioners of Korea and Japan, although it cannot be easily differentiated from early moyamoya disease. This review summarizes the nomenclature, pathophysiology, diagnostic evaluation, clinico-radiological features, and management of nonprogressive (reversible or stable) unilateral arteriopathy based on the relevant literature and our own experiences. Nonprogressive unilateral arteriopathy should be strongly suspected in children presenting with basal ganglia infarction and arterial beading. The early identification of patients likely to have nonprogressive or progressive arteriopathy would ensure proper management and guide further research for secondary stroke prevention.

  • Molecular imprinting constitutes a valuable method of preparing polymeric materials with specific binding properties. The most conspicuous merit of molecular imprinting is that structurally three-dimensional recognition sites can be introduced into a polymer matrix with ease and low cost when compared with the complicated process of biological system for antigen and antibody. We used a thermally reversible bond for the preparation of the monomer-template complex, which allowed us to remove the template easily by means of a simple thermal reaction and to simultaneously introduce various functional groups into the cavity. This method is especially propitious for developing artificial receptors for molecules lacking strongly interactive groups.

  • We study the structure of idempotents in polynomial rings, power series rings, concentrating in the case of rings without identity. In the procedure we introduce right Insertion-of-Idempotents-Property (simply, right IIP) and right Idempotent-Reversible (simply, right IR) as generalizations of Abelian rings. It is proved that these two ring properties pass to power series rings and polynomial rings. It is also shown that ${\pi}$-regular rings are strongly ${\pi}$-regular when they are right IIP or right IR. Next the noncommutative right IR rings, right IIP rings, and Abelian rings of minimal order are completely determined up to isomorphism. These results lead to methods to construct such kinds of noncommutative rings appropriate for the situations occurred naturally in studying standard ring theoretic properties.

  • N,N'-bis(ethyldihydrogen phosphate)-1,4,5,8-naphthalene bis(dicarboximide) (EPNI) and N,N'-bis(ethyldihydrogen phosphate)-3,4,9,10-perylene bis(dicarboximide) (EPPI) and their zirconium bisphosphate multilayers (Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI), that had been briefly reported by us, were further investigated in terms of their electrochemical properties. EPNI in aqueous solution showed typical two reversible reductions at ITO electrode but the reductions were strongly dependent on solution pH while EPPI showed only an irreversible reduction. The single and mixed multilayers of Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI were well constructed on ITO electrode by the alternate adsorptions of zirconium ion and the bisimides. While Zr-EPNI multilayer on ITO electrode showed single broad reversible reduction with $E_{1/2}=-0.68V$, Zr-EPPI gave two separated reductions at $E_{1/2}=-0.54$ and -0.81 V vs SCE, quite differently from the solution properties. The average layer densities of the multilayers were estimated as $1.5{\times}10^{-10}$ and $2.3{\times}10^{-10}mol/cm^2$ for Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI, respectively. Both the monolayers of Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI could not completely block the electron transfer between $Fe(CN){_6}^{3-}$ in solution and ITO electrode but 3-5 layers of Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI could block it completely and mediated the one-way electron transfer at the potential shifted to their reduction potentials. When the monolayer of zirconium 1,10-decanediylbisphosphonate (Zr-DBP) was used as a sublayer of Zr-EPNI and Zr-EPPI layers, the mediated electron transfer became prominent without any direct electron transfer.

  • Adenosine and its analogues are known to possess analgesic effects and to be involved in the opiate-induced antinociception as well. This study was designed to investigate the effects of three adenosine agonists, 5'- (N-cyclopropyl) -carboxamidoadenosine(CPCA), 5'-N-ethylcarboxamidoadeno-sine (NECA) and $N^6-cyclohexyladenosine$ (CHA) on the signal transmission in the spinal cord and also to elucidate mechanisms of their actions in the anesthetized cat. All the tested adenosine agonists(i.v,) exerted inhibitory effects on the responsiveness of the wide dynamic range (WDR) cells, the inhibitory action of CHA, an adenosine $A_1$ receptor agonist, $(80{\mu}g/Kg)$ being most weak. The intravenous CPCA, an adenosine $A_2$ receptor agonist, $(20{\mu}g\;/Kg)$ and NECA, nonspecific adenosine receptor agonist, $(20{\mu}g\;/Kg)$ inhibited the responses of WDR cells to pinch and C fiber stimulation more strongly than those to brush and A fiber stimulation. CPCA (i.v.) also suppressed the responses of WDR cells to thermal stimulus. And all the CPCA-induced inhibitions were caffeine-reversible. When CPCA was directly applied onto the spinal cord or intravenously administered into the spinal cat, on average, about three quarters of the CPCA-induced inhibitory effect was abolished. On the other hand, in the animal with spinal lesions in the ipsilateral dorsolateral area, the CPCA-induced inhibition was comparable to that observed in the spinal cats. In conclusion, this study shows that adenosine agonists strongly suppress the responses of WDR cells to pinch, C fiber stimulation and thermal stimuli mainly through the supraspinal adenosine $A_2-receptors$.

  • It has been known that oyster mushrooms cultivated in facilities with thermal insulation have been strongly affected by inner environments. Forced air-circulation fans exert much direct influence on disturbing air inside the facility so the matter is of particular interest. This study is carried out to investigate the measured levels of air uniformity in a cultivation facility for oyster mushroom in the various cases that reversibly controlled air-circulation fans which drove the flow in the upward and reverse direction by turn and unidirectional fans by which the wind blew upwards only were operated from July 1 to 10. The actual survey for the selection of ongoing operation cases presented that farmers, even though there were some discrepancies, have made use of fans in a way that it paused for 5-30min after running for 5-15min by turn. The level of air uniformity in the case of adopting reversible fans revealed a slight difference of 1.4-1.8℃ (Temp.) and 7.8-8.7% (R.H.) under the condition of not using a cooler during the investigation period. By contrast, unidirectional fans showed a noticeable difference of 3.2-3.7℃ and 14.0-15.4%, which meant that air uniformity driven by reversible fans much more increased compared to that for unidirectional fans. Among the twenty operational applications considered for reversible fans, the circumstance that the wind blew upwards for 10-15min and ceased for 5-10min and blew again in the reverse direction for 10-15min in succession gave minor improvements at the level of air uniformity, but at present there was somewhat difficult to make decision on which cases were optimally best. It seems necessary that the effects of reversible fans on air uniformity as well as qualities of oyster mushrooms have to be appraised in the cultivation period and the flow visualization needs to be done to ascertain the performance of air mixture.

  • Previous studies have shown that BMI-1026 is a potent inhibitor of the cyclin-dependent kinases (cdk). In cell culture, the compound also arrests G2/M strongly and G1/S and S weakly. Two key kinases, cdk1 (p34cdc2 kinase) and mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase (erk1 and 2), perform crucial roles during oocyte maturation and, later, metaphase II (MII) arrest. In mammalian oocytes, both kinases are activated gradually around the time of germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) and maintain high activity in eggs arrested at metaphase II. In this study, we examined the effects of BMI-1026 on GVBD and MII arrest in mouse oocytes. BMI-1026 inhibited GVBD of immature oocytes and activated MII-arrested oocytes in a concentration-dependent manner, with more than 90% of oocytes exhibiting GVBD inhibition and MII activation at 100 nM This is approximately 500$\sim$1,000 times more potent than the activity reported for the cdk inhibitors roscovitine (${\sim}50{\mu}M$) and butyrolactone (${\sim}100{\mu}M$). Based on the results of previous in vitro kinase assays, we expected BMI-1026 to inhibit only cdk1 activation in oocytes and eggs, not MAP kinase. However, in our cell-based system, it inhibited the activity of both kinases. We also found that the effect of BMI-1026 is reversible. Our results suggest that BMI-1026 inhibits GVBD and activates MII-arrested oocytes efficiently and reversibly and that it also inhibits both cdk1/histone HI kinase and MAP kinase in mouse oocytes.

  • Toward the development of universal, sensitive, and convenient method of DNA (or RNA) detection, two kinds of electrochemically active DNA ligands. acridine - viologen and oligonucleotide - ferrocene conjugate, were prepared. Thermodynamic and electrochemical study revealed that these probes bound strongly to DNA, and showed a typical cyclic voltammograms, indicating a potential for use as a reversible electrochemical labelling agent for DNA. Especially, using the electrochemically active oligonucleotide, we have been able to demonstrate the detection of DNA at femtomole levels by HPLC equipped with ordinary electrochemical detector (ECD). These results lead to the conclusion that the redox-active probes are very useful for the microanalysis of nucleic acid due to the stabilily of the complexes, high detection sensitivity, and wide applicability to the target structures (single- and double strands) and sequences.

  • The electrochemical reduction of methylene blue (MB) in 1.0${\times}$10-2 M KNO3 aqueous solution was investigated by direct current (DC), differential pulse (DP) polarography, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and controlled potential coulometry (CPC). The electrode reduction of melthylene blue was processed CE reaction mechanism by two electrons transfer at the first reversible wave (- 0.18 volts vs. Ag/AgCl). MB was strongly adsorbed on the stationary mercury electrode and the reduction product of conptrolled potential electrolysis was rapidly auto-oxidized in air to the original methylene blue. Upon the basis of interpretation of cyclic voltammogram with pH change, possible CE electrode reaction mechanism was suggested.

  • Three different phosphonated trisbipyridine ruthenium complexes, [(4-CH3-4'-CH2PO(OH)2-2,2'-bipyridine)- (bpy)2Ru]·(PF6)2 (Ru-P1), [(4-CH3-4'-CH2PO(OH)2-2,2'-bipyridine)3Ru]·(PF6)2 (Ru-P2), and [(4,4'-CH2PO- (OH)2-2,2'-bipyridine)3Ru]·(PF6)2 (Ru-P3) were synthesized and their photochemical and electrochemical properties were studied. These ruthenium complexes were strongly adsorbed on the surface of the layered metal oxide semiconductor K4Nb6O17 that was partially acid-exchanged and sensitized up to pH 10, while the carboxylated ruthenium complex, (4,4'-COOH-2,2'-bipyridine)3Ru·Cl2 (Ru-C) that was previously studied was sensitized only below pH 4. The visible light water reduction at K4Nb6O17 that was internally platinized and sensitized by these phosphonated Ru-complexes was comparatively studied using a reversible electron donor iodide.
