  • The purpose of this paper is to check the structural safety of the network equipments by performing the static and dynamic finite element analysis. The stress and displacement of structures under static loading condition are evaluated to check whether satisfying the design requirement conditions. Since the computed natural frequencies are similar to the results of experiment. the model could be used for the response spectrum analysis where experimental acceleration value at each frequency are used as seismic input excitation. It is shown that the analysis results are a little bit larger than that of the experimental values. Also sensitivity analysis and optimization for the natural frequency are performed and it is found that the first natural frequency is very sensitive to the stiffness of the equipment.

  • A superlastic material, aluminum - lithium alloy 8090, were examined with uniaxial tensile test to investigate its thermomechanical behavior. The tests were carried out at the strain-rates ranging from 2${\times}$10-4 to 1${\times}$10-2 and at the temperatures from 48 0$^{\circ}C$ to 540$^{\circ}C$. The experiments produced force-displacement curves which converted to stress-strain curves. From the curves, several important superplastic factor such as strain-rate sensitivity, optimum strain-rate and strength coefficient were obtained.

  • Magnetars are neutron stars powered by strong magnetic field (B > $10^{14}G$). Their spin period is in the range of 2 - 12s. The magnetic stress in the star may distort the crust (observed as outbursts), so magnetars (especially in outbursts) may emit gravitational waves. There are 29 magnetars known (potential gravitational waves sources), and increasing the number will increase the chance of detecting low-frequency gravitational waves. In addition, magnetars can be used for studying matter under extreme condition. In this study, we searched for more magnetars using extensive Chandra archival data and found 11 candidates. Due to the limited sensitivity of Chandra, form identification cannot be made, and more sensitivity X-ray data are needed.

  • A new smooth bore test barrel was developed to be used in sensitivity assessment test for explosives and fragment impact test. The bore diameter of the barrel is 20 mm, and the powder chamber is designed to be replaceable with the 12.7 mm, 20 mm and 30 mm type chamber. The test results showed the wide range of fragment velocity from 400 to 2000 m/s, included the fragment velocity requirement of the fragment impact test(alternate procedure #1) in MIL-STD-2105B. The stability of the bullet trajectory was checked by test shots and the structural safety of the system has been confirmed through the stress analysis and the interior ballistics analysis of the barrel.

  • One of the most important purposes in the design of machines and structures is to produce the most light products of the lowest price with satisfying function and performance. In this study, a scheme of design optimization for the weight down of vehicle body structure is presented. Design sensitivity of vehicle body structure is investigated and design optimization is performed to get weight down with the allowable stiffness of body in white. Stress, deformation and natural frequencies are the constraint of the optimization.

  • The goal of the research is to study and describe a new stressed state of High Temperature Superconducting (High-Tc) YBCO Films, to create of SQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) on the bases of these Films with maximal sensitivity. The experimental investigation of the stressed films grown by laser ablation method and its properties, the fabrication of the dc-SQUIDs with maximal sensitivity on the bases of the stressed YBCO films were carried out. The stressed film having the value of the critical current density $J_{c}=3{\cdot}10^{5}A/cm^{2}$ was the more stable than others.

  • This study contributes to evaluate multiphase topology optimization design of plate-like structures on elastic foundations by using classic plate theory. Multi-material optimal topology and shape are produced as an alternative to provide reasonable material assignments based on stress distributions. Multi-material topology optimization problem is solved through an alternative active-phase algorithm with Gauss-Seidel version as an optimization model of optimality criteria. Stiffness and adjoint sensitivity formulations linked to thin plate potential strain energy are derived in terms of multiphase design variables and Winkler-Pasternak parameters considering elastic foundation to apply to the current topology optimization. Numerical examples verify efficiency and diversity of the present topology optimization method of elastic thin plates depending on multiple materials and Winkler-Pasternak parameters with the same amount of volume fraction and total structural volume.

  • In this study, the structural optimal design was applied to the girder of over head crane. The optimization was carried out using ANSYS code fur the deadweight of girder, especially focused on the thickness of its upper, lower, reinforced and side plates. The weight could be reduced up to around 15% with constraints of its deformation, stress and buckling strength. The structural safety was also verified by the buckling analysis of its panel structure. It might be thought to be very useful to design the conventional structures fur the weight save through the structural optimization. The objective function and restricted function were estimated by the orthogonal array, and the sensitivity analysis of design variable fur that was operated.

  • The dynamic and sensing performances of nanomechanical resonators with their different boundary conditions are studied based on surface elasticity-based modeling and simulation. Specifically, the effect of surface stress is included in Euler-Bernoulli beam model for different boundary conditions. It is shown that the surface effect on the intrinsic elastic property of nanowire is independent of boundary conditions, while these boundary conditions affect the frequency behavior of nanowire resonator. The detection sensitivity of nanowire resonator is remarkably found to depend on the boundary conditions such that double-clamping boundary condition results in the higher mass sensitivity of the resonator in comparison with simple-support or cantilever boundary condition. Furthermore, we show that the frequency shift of nanowire resonator due to mass adsorption is determined by its length, whereas the frequency shift is almost independent of its thickness. This study enables a design principle providing an insight into how the dynamic and sensing performances of nanomechanical resonator is determined and tuned.

  • To investigate the validity of the finite element analysis program to assess structural integrity of a spent nuclear fuel transport cask subjected to extreme impact loads, structural integrity of the cask for the case of an aircraft engine collision is evaluated using three FE analysis programs: Autodyn, Speed and ABAQUS explicit version. As a result of all analyses, it is confirmed that no penetration occurred in the cask wall. Even though the different programs are used, it is identified that there are insignificant differences in the FE analysis variables such as von Mises effective stress and equivalent plastic strain among the programs.
