Objective : Cortisol, a product of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA axis), is one of our defensive mechanisms in response to stress. The level of cortisol in the saliva is a major biomarker of the stress response by HPA axis and shows diurnal variation. We measured salivary cortisol level and its diurnal variation to compare the pattern of changes by degree of burn and Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale (CAPS) score. Methods : We measured the salivary cortisol levels of 37 subjects hospitalized in the burn center at our facility from March to June 2012. Salivary cortisol levels were measured at 6 : 00 AM and at 7 : 00 PM. All subjects were tested for CAPS to evaluate the severity of posttraumatic stress disorder and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale to evaluate and to control the coexisting depression. Results : Factorial ANOVA test revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in terms of the effect of the interaction between the degree of burn and the patient's CAPS score. Unlike the mild burn group, in the severe burn group, the patients who had a low CAPS score didn't show a normal diurnal variation and the patients who had a high CAPS score showed the normal diurnal variation. After a few months follow up, we found a greater degree of psychiatric complications in severe burn patients that had a lower cortisol stress response. Conclusion : We suppose that the disappearance of the stress response changes in salivary cortisol seen in the severe burn group may be caused by an impaired stress response. Through followed observation of the subjects, this disruption of cortisol response may cause psychiatric problems afterwards.
Background : This study was carried out to examine the changes of job stress after adoption of order communication system(OCS) and its related factors. Methods : Two hundreds and twenty one employees in a university hospital were surveyed 4 months before and 1 year after the OCS had been adopted. Author used Korean version of Karasek's job content questionnaire(K-JCQ) to evaluate job stress. The questionnaire developed by Doll's was used to assess the satisfaction for the OCS. Result : With the adoption of OCS, the scores of skill discretion increased significantly from 29.9 to 30.8 that meant job stress was decreased. In use of OCS, direct user group showed significant increase of skill discretion, whereas the indirect user group showed significant increase in psychological job demand, and it was statistically significant when compared to direct user group(p<0.05). Among the changes in job stress, skill discretion score change was significantly different by age(p<0.05). This study revealed that there was statistically significant relationship between the change of skill discretion score and time computer use, level of satisfaction for content of provided information(p<0.05). And psychological job demand score change was significantly different by time of computer use(p<0.05). Conclusion : Adoption of OCS into hospital may increase job stress, but when it is adopted wisely and appropriately, it may enhance skill discretion of each individual, and decision authority while reducing psychological job demand.
This study was conducted to understand the degree and contents of stress which the mothers of high-risk infants can be experienced from the hospitalization of ICU for their new borns, and thus to offer the basic program to he nursing intervention program for these. Subjects were the 171 mother of hospitalized newborn in NICU of 1 University Hospital in Busan from June, 20, 2001 to September, 15, 2001, who agreed to take part in this study. The instruments used in this study were Parental Stressor Scale:NICU(PSS:NICU) developed by Miles et al. The questionnaire has 4 dimensions and 45 items ; sight and sounds of NICU(5 items), babies' appearance and behavior nursing intervention(19 items), parental role alteration and relationship with their baby(10 items), health team communication(11 items). The data was analysed as average, frequency, Standard Deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient by use of SPSS/PC+. The results of this study are as follows ; 1. The total perceived stress level score of mothers of high-risk infants was slightly high(3.44±0.71). The highest scored dimension was 'appearance and behavior of the baby'(4.06±0.80), and next were 'relationship with their baby and parental role change'(3.55±0.98), 'sight and sounds of NICU'(3.22±1.01), 'communication with health team'(2.93±0.91). 2. The total perceived stress level score was significantly correlated with birth weight (F=2.35, p<.05). 3. In sight and sounds of NICU, the perceived stress level score was significantly correlated with nursing in the incubator(t=2.28, p<.05) and birth weight(t=2.26, p<.05). In summary, information about physical environment of NICU, birth weight and nursing in the incubator must be included in nursing intervention program of mother's of high-risk infants in reducing the patents stress level. And, it is suggested that there need to find the coping mechanism of mother of high-risk infants.
Objectives: The objective of the present study was to assess the factors that influence the health of workers, especially nurses, and to propose methods for health management. Methods: A total of 246 nurses were surveyed to ascertain the health status score, Sasang constitution diagnosis, health-related life and job factors, psychosocial stress, and job stress. Depending on their health status score, the subjects were categorized into unhealthy, intermediate, or healthy groups, and each factor was compared with the stress score of the groups. Further, each Sasang constitution factor was also compared with the stress scores. Results: Analysis based on the health status scores indicated that the patients in the intermediate group were older and had longer tenure than those in the unhealthy or healthy groups. The healthy group had higher number of married individuals, and they were subjectively assessed as healthy. Patients in this group were more satisfied with their work than those in the unhealthy group. Analysis of the Sasang constitution showed that a lower percentage of individuals with a Soeumin constitution were married, and most considered themselves to be unhealthy during the subjective health assessment. Conclusions: The findings of this survey revealed that in order to maintain health, efforts should be made to improve the work environment, achieve health confidence, and practice health behavior while considering one's own body, mental state, and constitution.
본 연구는 간호대학생의 내외통제성 정서조절곤란 및 임상실습스트레스와의 관계를 분석하고자 시도되었다. 연구대상자는 일개 대학 간호학과에 재학 중이며 본 연구의 목적을 이해하고 협조를 수락한 220명을 대상으로 하였으며, 연구설계는 횡단적 조사연구이다. 수집된 자료는 빈도, 백분율, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient 와 stepwise regression analysis를 사용하여 분석하였다. 그러므로 임상실습스트레스는 내 외통제소재과 정서조절곤란에 정적인 상관관계를 보였으며, 그 영향요인은 정서조절곤란, 실습만족도, 학년, 종교, 내 외통제소재으로 나타났으며, 그 설명력은 17%였다. 그 결과 간호대학생들의 임상실습스트레스를 줄이기 위해서는 정서를 적절하게 조절하고 내적 통제 전략을 통해 임상실습스트레스를 경감할 수 있는 효율적인 교육방안의 모색 및 임상 적응능력 향상 프로그램 개발이 필요하다.
Purpose: This study aimed to examine premenstrual symptoms (PMS) of shift nurses and identify the association between PMS, sleep, and occupational stress. Methods: This study was conducted with a secondary data analysis that used data from the Shift Work Nurse's Health and Turnover study. The participants were 258 nurses who were working in shifts including night shifts. PMS, sleep patterns (sleep time and sleep time variability), sleep quality, and the occupational stress of each participant were measured using the Moos Menstrual Distress Questionnaire, a sleep diary, an actigraph, the Insomnia Severity Index, and the Korean Occupational Stress Scale, respectively. Data were analyzed using SPSS 23 and STATA 15.1 to obtain descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, multiple linear regression with generalized estimating equations (GEE) and Baron and Kenny's mediating analysis. Results: The average PMS score, average sleep time, average sleep time variability, average sleep quality score, and average occupational stress score of the participants was 53.95 ± 40.45, 7.52 ± 0.89 hours, 32.84 ± 8.43%, 12.34 ± 5.95, and 49.89 ± 8.98, respectively. A multiple linear regression analysis with GEE indicated that sleep time variability (B = 0.86, p = .001), and sleep quality (B = 2.36, p < .001) had negative effects on nurses' PMS. We also found that sleep quality had a complete mediating effect in the relationship between occupational stress and PMS. Conclusion: These findings indicate that both sleep time variability and sleep quality are important factors associated with PMS among shift work nurses. To improve shift nurses' PMS status, strategies are urgently needed to decrease sleep time variability and increase sleep quality.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between sleep quality and mental health among adolescents and identify the factors relating to mental health. Methods: The subjects consisted of 285 middle school students. The data were collected from May $2^{nd}$ to $27^{th}$, 2016. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression with SPSS ver. 21. Results: The mean score for quality of sleep in adolescents was $4.20{\pm}2.64$, and the mean score for mental health was $13.67{\pm}12.93$. Poor sleepers showed higher scores for mental health than good sleepers. Mental health was found to have a positive correlation with both stress and quality of sleep. Stress and sleep quality were found to be significant factors influencing mental health and explained 59% of the variance in mental health. Conclusion: These findings indicate that effective intervention programs enhancing sleep quality should be provided for adolescents in order to prevent poor mental health.
Purpose - Although various studies have been conducted on the stress of service employees, there are still lack of studies regarding job stress and job satisfaction of call center workers. Especially there are quite few studies on the job stress according to employment type. This study focused on job stress and job satisfaction for call center employees and the correlation between the two factors and aimed to provide basic materials for seeking for the plans to reduce job stress and improve job satisfaction. Research design, data, and methodology - Frequency, percentage, and mean value were calculated through descriptive statistics in order to find out demographic characteristics, level of job stress, and job satisfaction. Differences in job stress according to employment type were calculated by using one-way ANOVA. Correlation between job stress and job satisfaction were identified through empirical analysis with Pearson's correlation coefficient. 150 materials were used for final analysis. The collected materials were analyzed to get statistics by using SPSS 20. Results - First, as for the job stress of call center workers, overall mean value was 2.54 in 4-point scales. Among the six sub-factors, job demands had the highest score, which was 2.67. Second, as for the job stress according to employment type, others showed higher score than mean value followed by contract job and full-time job in that order, in terms of job insecurity and organizational system. In terms of inappropriate remuneration, contract job showed higher score than mean value followed by others and full-time job. Third, as for the satisfaction with job, the mean value was 2.37 in 4-point scale and "very much satisfied" was only 3.3%. Lastly, in terms of job stress and job satisfaction, all sub-factors except for job demands showed significant correlation. The more job stress increased, the more job satisfaction decreased. Conclusions - First, as a result of analyzing job stress according to the employment type of call center workers, job stress increased more when the employment type was not full-time. Therefore, it was assumed that self-rescue efforts should be followed for effective employment management of call center business where contract employment takes most part as well as efforts to transfer them to full-time job. Second, decrease in job satisfaction of call center workers may affect the performance of an organization as well as service quality of the company providing the service. Therefore, various supports are required to decrease job stress and increase job satisfaction for call center workers through the expansion of rest area or break time. Third, I could recognize that there were lack of academic research on call center business in the whole service industry. Therefore, further research should be conducted more actively in the future. In particular, this study has special significance in the aspect that there were few studies on the job stress of call center workers according to employment type.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between depression, perceived stress, fatigue and anger in clinical nurses. Method: A descriptive survey was conducted using a convenient sample. Data was collected by questionnaires from four hundred clinical nurses who worked at a university hospital. Radloff's CES-D for depression, Cohen, Kamarck & Mermelstein's Perceived Stress Scale, VAS for Fatigue, and Spielberger's STAXI for anger were used. The data was analyzed using the pearson correlation coefficient, students' t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 12.0. Result: The depression of clinical nurses showed a significantly positive correlation to perceived stress(r=.360, p=.000), mental fatigue(r=.471, p=.000), physical fatigue(r=.350, p=.000), trait anger(r=.370, p=.000), anger-in expression(r=.231, p=.000), and anger-control expression(r=.120, p=.016). There was a negative correlation between depression and age(r=-.146, p=.003). The mean score of depression of nurses, 26, was a very high score and 40.8% of clinical nurses were included in a depression group. The main significant predictors influencing depression of clinical nurses were mental fatigue, trail anger, perceived stress, anger-in expression, and state anger, which explained about 32.7%. Conclusion: These results indicate that clinical nurses with a high degree of perceived stress, mental fatigue and anger-in expression are likely to be depressed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze dental technicians' job stress and Job satisfaction level and to examine its correlation. Methods: A self-administered survey was conducted from September 2 to October 2, 2019, on 230 selected dental technicians. The collected data were statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained, and t-test, one-way ANOVA, correlation analysis and regression analysis were carried out. Results: When the job stress was analyzed, there were significant differences according to their field of work, working hours(p<.05). Their average score in the items about a job stress was 3.57. As a result of analyzing the job satisfaction of the dental technicians, there were significant differences according to their working hours, plan for task continuity in dental technician(p<.05). The average score in job satisfaction items was 3.11. Conclusion: As a result of research, that as for the correlation between a job stress and job satisfaction, a higher the job stress led to lower the job satisfaction, as every variable had a significant reverse correlation with each other. In addition, physical environment, heavy workload, conflict during the work performance, personal matters were identified as the factor that exerted the influence on both of job satisfaction.
