  • In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology called as the NDB(New Down and Board) soil nailing system is introduced. To improve the trafficability, workability, and economical efficiency, SMC(Sheet Molding Compound) board is adopted instead of using the concrete block facing. The SMC board has a distinct advantage of showing a fine view by directly coating with any kind of environmental photos. Composite material properties of the SMC board and cement grout are distinguished features of the NDB soil nailing system. In the present study, both laboratory tests(bending and punching failure tests) and field pull-out tests are carried out to analyze the behavior characteristics of the NDB soil nailing system, including the stress and strain distribution.

  • Turnout is a mechanical installation enabling railway trains to be guided from one track to another at a railway junction. A movable nose crossing frog is a device used at a railway turnout to eliminate the gap at the common crossing (High manganese, block, assembly crossing)which can cause impact damage, noise and vibration. Our government has a plan speed up of conventional line to 250km/h semi-high speed. We had already developed flexible turnout with fixed crossing(High manganese) and SFC fastening system can cover in the semi-high speed line In this study is about development of the movable nose crossing turnout available Semi-high speed line on concrete track. This paper describes about geometry, attack angle, bending stress at the nose, switching force, safety of continuous welded long rails. This movable nose crossing turnout is expected greatly increases passing speed of turnout in national railway.

  • Seismic design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures requires a certain minimum level of flexural ductility. For example, Eurocode EN1998-1 directly specifies a minimum flexural ductility for RC beams, while Chinese code GB50011 limits the equivalent rectangular stress block depth ratio at peak resisting moment to achieve a certain nominal minimum flexural ductility indirectly. Although confinement is effective in improving the ductility of RC beams, most design codes do not provide any guidelines due to the lack of a suitable theory. In this study, the confinement for desirable flexural ductility performance of both normal- and high-strength concrete beams is evaluated based on a rigorous full-range moment-curvature analysis. An effective strategy is proposed for flexural ductility design of RC beams taking into account confinement. The key parameters considered include the maximum difference of tension and compression reinforcement ratios, and maximum neutral axis depth ratio at peak resisting moment. Empirical formulae and tables are then developed to provide guidelines accordingly.

  • The side chain liquid crystal triblock copolymers (TBCs), which underwent phase transitions below their decomposition temperature, were prepared by copolymerization of poly(n-butyl acrylate) and a comonomer containing the mesogenic azobenzene group. The physical properties of TBCs in the distinctive transition temperature ranges were investigated in terms of the liquid crystal (LC) content in the copolymers. The phase transition temperatures traced optically, thermally and rheologically were well coincided one another and clearly exhibited the phase transition of smectic-nematic-isotropic with increasing temperature. In the smectic phase, increasing temperature made the liquid crystal system more elastic, but viscosity (${\eta}'$) remained almost constant. In the nematic phase, increasing temperature abruptly decreased ${\eta}'$ and G', ultimately leading to isotropic phase. Both smectic and nematic phases exhibited Bingham viscosity behavior but the former gave much greater yield stress at the same LC content.

  • A pilot plant of underground cold storage for food has been excavated as a R&D program. For the stability assessment of underground cold storage opeinengs in shallow jointed rocks, three kinds of stability problems were analyzed by numerical methods. For the analysis of unstability by rock block movements, DEM was used considering the statistical distribution of rock joints. Concerning thermally induced cracking, FDM was used with thermomechanical stress analysis. Finally, in order to evaluate the joint failure during the thawing process, BE algorithm was applied. Numerical examples applied for the pilot plant show that the possibility of unstable failure of opeings exists but can be avoided with proper rock reinforcements provided.

  • The determination of compressive zone at the critical section of concrete walls under in-plane flexure is important in both assessing the ductility and designing the seismic retrofit. Recognizing this, the once-predominated code approach to determine the compressive zone was advanced by considering concrete rectangular stress block parameters varying with the extreme fiber strain in compression. It is shown that the major factors influencing the magnitude of compressive zone are axial load ratio, concrete strength, longitudinal steel ratio, yield strength and the level of strain at extreme compression fiber of wall sections. The present paper closes with the discussion for the research agenda requiring further study to investigate the behavior of reinforced concrete walls.

  • In this study, an experimental research of grinding characteristics using super-abrasives for surface carburized and heat treated SCM415 materials, which were usually used to make a linear motion guide block and were comparatively hard-to-machine materials, was carried out. In order to conduct a high efficiency and a accuracy grinding of such materials, grinding processes using CBN (Cubic boron nitride) and 38P grinding wheels have been attempted on a surface grinding machine. The grindability according to each grinding conditions was evaluated by means of a grinding force, a surface roughness and a residual stress. The experimental methods and results were presented in this paper. And also, from a proposed truing method the CBN wheels that combined a copper and a break truer gave a full scope to the wheel's performance.

  • In this paper, flexure behavior of steel fiber reinforcement ultra high performance cementations composites (SFR-UHPCC) has been analyzed by equivalent stress block. Pulling-out tensile force of steel fiber with concrete matrix was induced. An appropriate flexure evaluation formula, i.e. semi-analytical formula, was established based on rectangular cross section beam for comparing with shear capacity and ultimate load of SFR-UHPCC beam. Finally, the semi-analytical formula has been simplified for the convenience of design work. Experimental results and theoretical shear strength are shown to compare with the formula proposed by this paper. The theory formula has a good prediction of failure type of SFR-UHPCC.

  • Concrete in a CFT(Concrete Filled Tube) column has enhanced strength and ductility because it is triaxially confined by a steel tube. But CFT columns are designed based on linear analyses by stress block method without the confining effect or the nonlinearity of the concrete. These make the significantly difference between the analysis results and the experimental results. Thus in this study, a nonlinear CFT column model was developed considering the confining effect on the concrete in a CFT column. This developed model was verified by experimental results from other researchers and compared with the results of various specifications. With the developed model, parametric studies were performed and the developed column model showed reasonable and accurate results.
