  • New insights are presented in simplified modeling and analysis of free vibrations of piezoelectric - based smart structures and systems. These consist, first, in extending the wide used piezoelectric-thermal analogy (TA) simplified modeling approach in currently static actuation to piezoelectric free-vibrations under short-circuit (SC) and approximate open-circuit (OC) electric conditions; second, the popular piezoelectric strain induced - potential (IP) simplified modeling concept is revisited. It is shown that the IP resulting frequencies are insensitive to the electric SC/OC conditions; in particular, SC frequencies are found to be the same as those resulting from the newly proposed OC TA. Two-dimensional plane strain (PStrain) and plane stress (PStress) free-vibrations problems are then analyzed for above used SC and approximate OC electric conditions. It is shown theoretically and validated numerically that, for both SC and OC electric conditions, PStress frequencies are lower than PStrain ones, and that 3D frequencies are bounded from below by the former and from above by the latter. The same holds for the modal electro-mechanical coupling coefficient that is retained as a comparator of presented models and analyses.

  • A novel indentation theory is proposed by examining the data from the incremental plasticity theory based finite element analyses. First the optimal data acquisition location is selected, where the strain gradient is the least and the effect of friction is negligible. This data acquisition point increases the strain range by a factor of five. Numerical regressions of obtained data exhibit that strain hardening exponent and yield strain are the two main parameters which govern the subindenter deformation characteristics. The new indentation theory successfully provides the stress-strain curve with an average error less than 5%.

  • The goal of this paper is to estimate proper hardfacing material and thickness of STD61 hot-working tool steel through three-dimensional heat transfer and thermal stress analyses. Stellite6, Stellite21 and 19-9DL superalloys are chosen as alternative hardfacing materials. The influence of hardfacing materials and thicknesses on temperature, thermal stress and thermal strain distributions of the hardfaced part are investigated using the results of the analyses. From the results of the investigation, it has been noted that a hardfacing material with a high conductivity and a thinner hardfaced layer are desired to create an effective hardfacing layer in terms of heat transfer characteristics. In addition, it has been revealed that the deviation of effective stress and principal strain in the vicinity of the joined region are minimized when the Stellite21 hardfaced layer with the thickness of 2 mm is created on the STD61. Based on the above results, a proper hardfacing material and thickness for STD61 tool steel have been estimated.

  • Objectives : A precedent research has documented that occupational stress is closely associated with increased the risk of fatigue and decreased in job satisfaction. This study was conducted in an effort to assess the relationship of occupational stress to self-perceived fatigue and job satisfaction by using job strain model. Methods : The number of respondents was 122 dental hygienist who work in dental clinic and period of the investigation was July 2009 through september 2009. A structured questionnaire was employed to evaluate the participants' sociodemographics, job-related factors, health-related behaviors, occupational stress, job satisfaction and self-perceived fatigue. Occupational stress and self-perceived fatigue were assessed using the Korean Occupational Stress Scale-Short form (KOSS-SF) and the Multidimensional Fatigue Scale (MFS), respectively. Results : In job strain model, the ratio of Q2(High Strain Job) group that more susceptible to disease by stress than other group was 16% and the proportion of high fatigue group(Q3, Q4 group) and low job satisfaction group(Q3, Q4 group) was 48%, 45% respectively. In logistic regression analyses, a High Strain Job group was associated with higher odds of react factor(fatigue, job satisfaction) and the odds was down by 3.3%~7.5% after adjustment for age, smoking, alcohol drinking, regular exercise. So the effective strategy for fatigue, job satisfaction reduction for dental hygienist requires additional program focusing on innovated work environment that provide a enough leisure time and exercise program considering the personality traits. Conclusions : The results of this study suggest that occupational stress is a determinant predictor of self perceived fatigue and job satisfaction. Thus, a stress management program for the reduction of occupational stress, and the promotion of dental hygienist impact assessment health and quality of life is strongly recommended.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the influence of impact conditions on the impact characteristics of the stainless sheet for the case of the fixed boundary conditions. In order to examine impact characteristics of the sheet, three-dimensional finite element analyses and impact tests have been performed. High speed tensile tests have been carried out to obtain strain-stress relationships including the effects of the strain rate. In order to improve an accuracy of the FE analysis, the hyper-elastic model and the damping factor have been introduced. The results of the FE analyses and the impact tests have been shown that the diameter of the impact head does not affect the absorption energy of the stainless sheet. In addition, it has been shown that the absorption rate of energy maintains almost $82.5\;\sim\;83.5\;%$ irrespective of the impact energy level and the diameter of the impact head. From the results of FE analyses, the variation of stress and strain energy in the stainless sheet has been quantitatively examined.

  • Thermal cracks ard occured when thermal stress due to the hydration of cement exceeds the tensile strength of concrete. Since cracking causes poor durability of concrete, the effect of thermal cracking should be included for the desing and construction of massive concrete structures. In this study, an experiments are performed for the investigation of time dependent temperature and thermal stress of massive concrete structure at early ages. In order to measure temperatures and thermal stresses, concrete stress meter, embedded strain meter, non-stress meter, and thermocouples are used. Based on the analyses of measured thermal stress data, measured values by concrete stress meter are more reliable than those by embedded strain meter and non-stress meter, And measured values by concrete stress meter are compared with the calculated values by FEM program developed by DICT (DWTS2D). Calculated values by DWTS2D show good agreement with measured values.

  • Structural integrity assessment of defected pipe is important in fitness for service evaluation and proper engineering assessment is needed to determine whether pipelines are still fit for service. This paper present a failure prediction of gas pipes made of APIl X65 steel with gouge using stress-modified true fracture strain, which is regarded as a criterion of ductile fracture. For this purpose, API X65 pipes with gouge are simulated using elastic-plastic FE analyses with the proposed ductile failure criterion and the resulting burst pressures are compared with experimental data. Agreements are quite good, which gives confidence in the use of the proposed criteria to defect assessment fer gas pipelines. Then, further extensive finite element analyses are performed to obtain the burst pressure solution of pipes with gouge as a function of defect depth, length and pipeline geometry.

  • In a companion paper. (Oh, 2002), the constitutive model, called GUX model, was implemented as a user subroutine in ABAQUS code, where the GUX model could describe the behavior of overall strain range. An accuracy analysis verified that the implicit stress integration maintained the accuracy of solutions successfully. Since the GUX model is an anistropic hardening elasto-plastic constitutive model based on total stress concept, geotechnical problems under fully drained or undrained condition can be analyzed after acquisition of stress-strain relationships from drained or undrained triaxial tests. This study includes the analyses of the stability of embankments on soft clays and weathered soils and the example of axially loaded soil-pile system. In the large deformation analyses, geometric nonlinearity was considered and the result of analyses with GUX model was compared with that of Mises model for the overall strain range behavior.

  • Accidental events such as collisions, groundings, and hydrocarbon explosions in marine structures can cause catastrophic damage. Thus, it is extremely important to predict the extent of such damage, which determines the total amount of oil spills and the residual hull girder strength. Punching fracture tests were conducted by Choung (2009b), where various sizes of indenters and circular unstiffened steel plates with different thicknesses were used to quasi-statically realize damage extents. A three-dimensional fracture strain surface was developed based on a reference (Choung et al., 2015b), where the average stress triaxiality and average normalized Lode angle were used as the parameters governing the fracture of ductile steels. In this study, new numerical analyses were performed using very fine axisymmetric elements in combination with an Abaqus user-subroutine to implement the three-dimensional fracture strain surface. Conventional numerical analyses were also conducted for the tests to identify the best fit fracture strain values by changing the fracture strains. Based on the phenomenon of the average normalized Lode angle starting out positive and then becoming slightly negative, it was inferred that the shear stress primarily dominates in determining the fractures locations, with a partial contribution from the compressive stress. It should be stated that the three-dimensional fracture surface effectively predicted at least the shear stress-dominant fracture behavior of a mild steel.
