  • In recent years, considerable attention has been paid to the research and development of high-strength steel plates, with particular emphasis on the enhancement of the seismic resistance of buildings and bridges. Many efforts have also been undertaken to improve the properties of high-strength bolts and weld materials. However, there are still different opinions on steel joints that combine high-strength bolts and fillet welds. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the design specifications and guidelines, especially for newly developed 1,400-MPa high-strength bolts, 570-MPa steel plates, and weld materials. This paper presents the results of literature reviews and experimental investigations. Test parameters include bolt strengths, weld orientations, and their combinations. The results show that advances in steel materials have increased the plastic deformation capacities of steel welds. That allows combination joints to gain their maximum strength before the welds have fracture failures. When in combination with longitudinal welds, high-strength bolts slip, come in contact with cover plates, and develop greater bearing strength before the joints reach their maximum strength. However, in the case of combinations with transverse welds, changes in crack angles cause the welds to provide additional strength. The combination joints can therefore develop strength greater than estimated by adding the strength of bolted joints in proportion to those of welded joints. Consequently, using the slip resistance as the available strength of high-strength bolts is recommended. That ensures a margin of safety in the strength design of combination joints.

  • The distribution of stress and strain in elastic stages is investigated by the experiments of two dimensional photoelastic coating and Moire fringe method. Center block type and cover plate type of fillet welds are used as specimens in the test. The results are as follows. 1) Center block type gets less uniform stress distribution than cover plate type. And its stress concentration factor, especially at root, is larger than that at toe. 2) When main plate and cover plate closely contact and it cause friction, stress concentration decreases more than that in case of slit. That is because stress can be transmitted on the contact surface. 3) When slit is made, the outside of fillet gets more stress than the inside of it. 4) While the plastic strain distribution of center block type reaches the maximum at root and differs very slightly from that under lower loading, the plastic strain distribution of cover plate type is inclined to get the maximum at the outside of fillet rather than at root. 5) When the plastic strain value of cover plate type is compared with that of center block type at toe and root, the relations between the former and the latter shows root<toe and root>toe. 6) Because stress distribution becomes changed according to loading, fracture angle cannot be estimated by the peaks of elastic stress distribution. 7) The strain distribution just before fracture can be found by Moire fringe method.

  • Formation of the weld defect, such as a blowhole and a pit in lap-jointed fillet arc welds has been a serious problem in arc welding of Zn-coated steel sheet. In this study, the relationship among welding conditions, welding materials and defect formation was investigated in order to minimize these defects in the CO₂ welds. In addition, the arc stability of the commercial welding wires was evaluated for revealing their effects on defect formation. Main conclusions obtained are as follows:1) There was no difference between shear tensile strength of the sound welds and that of the welds with blowholes whose diameters are less than 0.5mm. However, the welds with blowholes whose diameters are equal or larger than 0.5mm and pits exhibited tensile strength 10~20% and 30~40% lower than that of the sound welds respectively.2) The optimum welding condition to effectively prevent or reduce the weld defects formation are as follows:- The welding variables of 220A-23V-100cm/min and 120A-190V-30cm/min were recommended for minimizing the weld defects.- The gap between the two sheets at the lap-joint should be controlled to more than 0.2mm- Solid wire was less susceptible to the formation of the weld defects than the flux-cored wire.- The low welding current condition produced less weld defects than the hihg welding current condition.3) One of the reason why the amount of the defect was reduced at the low welding current was the gas discharging by the active agitation of the molten pool, due to an increasing in the number of the short circuit. • Welded connections have been designed on basis of allowable stresses, wherein the response to loading is assumed to be totally elastic. This is the vector analysis method, which resolves the stresses determined from the direct stress formula and the torsion formula into a vector combination to obtain a solution. It has been known that this method gives conservative answers and typically a very high factor of safety. An analytical method based on the Instantaneous Center of Rotation has been developed which predicts the ultimate strength of an eccentically loaded fillet welded connection. The method of Instantaneous Center of Rotation results in weld resistance capacities greater than the vector analysis method, by recognizing the variation in fillet weld strength with respect to the direction of the applied loading and actual load-deformation response of elemental fillet welds. The procedure of numerical analysis is iterative and complex. The relations between vector analysis method and the method of Instantaneous Center of Rotation on eccentrical distance subjected to variation of load direction are presented in this paper. Considering of the effects on configuration of weld groups, the method of Instantaneous Center of Rotation are provided a more exact results of the numerical analysis.

  • This study aims to assess fatigue property by the static overload and average load in the fillet welded joints which is on the ship structural steel having gusset welds. To this end, a small specimen was made, to which the same welding condition for the actual ship structure was applied, to perform fatigue tests. In this study, a method to simply assess changes in welding residual stress according to different static overload was suggested. By measuring actual strain at the weld toe, the weld stress concentration factor and property which is determined by recrystallization in the process of welding were estimated to investigate the relation between overload and fatigue strength.
