  • The novel type of cable under consideration is cooled by gaseous Helium at elevated pressure. Helium is known for having poor electric breakdown strength; therefore the dielectric capabilities of this type of cable must be tested under conditions similar to the envisaged operation. In order to study the dielectric performance we have designed and built a novel high pressure cryostat rated at 2.17 MPa which has been used for testing model cables of lengths of up to 1 m. The cryostat is an open system where the gas is not re-circulated. This allows maintaining a high purity of the gas. The target temperature range is between 40 K and 70 K. This substantially increases the critical current density of the HTS compared to 77 K, which is the typical temperature of cables cooled by liquid nitrogen. The cryostat presented allows for adjusting the temperature and keeping it constant for the time necessary to run a complete dielectric characterization test. We give a detailed description of the cryostat. Measurements of partial discharge inception voltages as well as the temperature distribution along the model cables as a function of time are presented.

  • This paper proposes degree of hydration based shrinkage prediction model of 40MPa HPC. This model shows degree of hydration which is defined as the ratio between the hydrated cement mass and the initial mass of cement is very closely related to shrinkage deformation. In this study, degree of hydration was determined by CEMHYD-3D program of NIST. Verification of the predicted degree of hydration is performed by comparison between test results of compressive strength and estimated one by CEMHYD-3D. Proposed model is determined by statistical nonlinear analysis using the program Origin of Origin Lab. Co. To get coefficients of the model, drying shrinkage tests of four specimen series were followed with basic material tests. Testes were performed in constant temperature /humidity chamber, with difference moisture curing ages to know initial curing time effect. Verification with another specimen, collected construction field of FCM bridge, was given in the same condition as pre-tested specimens. Finally, all test results were compared to propose degree of hydration based model and other code models; AASHTO, ACI, CEB-FIP, JSCE, etc.

  • Recently, a variety of special concrete structures have been designed in domestic and overseas construction markets and more advanced construction technology is required. Therefore, it is necessary to secure quantitative construction technology. For this purpose, it is essential to develop a standard reference material having a constant flow performance and quality to evaluate quantitative performance. On the other hand, the flowability of the concrete is greatly influenced by the flowability of the cement paste. Also, in consideration of design strength and workability, mix design is carried out at various mixing ratios according to the purpose of the site. Therefore, in this study, based on the derived components of standard reference materials for cement paste, we suggested mixing ratio of standard reference materials that can uniformly simulate the flow characteristics of cement paste according to W/C. As a result, it was found that the yield stress was determined by the ratio of water and glycerol but plastic viscosity was controled by limestone content. Finally, the ratio of standard reference materials to simulate the rheological range of cement paste by W/C was suggested.

  • The article describes the development of a novel dissipative bracing connection device (identified by the acronym DRBrC) for concentrically braced frames in steel and composite structures. The origins of the device trace back to the seminal work of Kelly, Skinner and Heine (1972), and, more directly related, to the PIN-INERD device, overcoming some of its limitations and greatly improving the replaceability characteristics. The connection device is composed of a rigid housing, connected to both the brace and the beam-column connection (or just the column), in which the axial force transfer is achieved by four-point bending of a dissipative pin. The experimental validation stages, presented in detail, consisted of a preliminary testing campaign, resulting in successive improvements of the original device design, followed by a systematic parametric testing campaign. That final campaign was devised to study the influence of the constituent materials (S235 and Stainless Steel, for the pin, and S355 and High Strength Steel, for the housing), of the geometry (four-point bending intermediate spans) and of the loading history (constant amplitude or increasing cyclic alternate). The main conclusions point to the most promising DRBrC device configurations, also presenting some suggestions in terms of the replaceability requirements.

  • From the development of residential flat plate system, continuously bended shear reinforcement is developed for the prevention of punching shear. To know the punching shear capacity of developed shear reinforcement in slab-column joint, structural test is performed. The testing parameters are shear reinforcement types, such as no reinforcement, bended shear reinforcement, and head stud reinforcement. To verify the lateral capacity, cyclic load is applied under the constant vertical load condition. The results of tests are compared to as global displacement, slab-column joint strength. From the test results, the resisting capacity of developed shear reinforcement system has a good performance in the story drift ratio.

  • Objective of this study was to investigate adsorption characteristics of $PO_4-P$ to biochar produced from oak tree in respective to reduce eutrophication from runoff water in the cropland. For adsorption experiment, input amount of biochar was varied from 4 to 20 g/L with 30 mg/L $PO_4-P$ solution. Adsorption amounts and removal rates of $PO_4-P$ was increased at 3 times in 4~14 g/L, and increased at 28.6% in 4~16 g/L, respectively. The maximum adsorption amount ($q_m$) and binding strength constant(b) were calculated as 0.10 mg/g and 0.06 L/mg, respectively. The sorption of $PO_4-P$ to biochar was fitted well by Langmuir model because it was observed that dimensionless constant($R_L$) was 0.37. It was indicated that biochar is favorably adsorbed $PO_4-P$ because this value lie within 0 < $R_L$ < 1. Therefore, biochar produced from oak tree could be used as adsorbent for reduce eutrophication from runoff water in the cropland.

  • In this study, possible use of indigenous natural loess (Hwangtoh) as a new binding material via geopolymerization process is examined. Hwangtoh pastes with four different mix proportions of varying alkali liquid concentrations (6 M, 8 M) and the constituents of the binder as well as the alkali liquid at a constant liquid-to-binder ratio of 0.55 were prepared. Analysis of the natural loess (Hwangtoh) paste was carried out as follows : 1) Measurement of compressive strength and weight of cubic specimens versus curing time; 2) Analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) about reaction product; 3) Porosity analysis of hardened Hwangtoh paste. The result showed that it is possible to prepare Hwangtoh paste with 29.1 MPa at the age of 7 day by using alkali solution (made as 1 : 4.5 the mass ratio of liquefied $Na_2SiO_3$ and NaOH solution and applying the curing temperature of $60^{\circ}C$). Compressive strength development with respect to the degree of moisture evaporation from the paste seems to be independent of curing temperature. Therefore, it seems that higher early strength of the paste specimens cured at higher temperature can be attributed to both higher rate of reaction and moisture evaporation.

  • Mica capacitor is being adopted for high voltage firing unit of guided weapon system because of its superior impact enduring property relative to ceramic capacitor. Reliability of localized mica high voltage capacitors was verified through environmental test like terminal strength test, humidity test, thermal shock test and accelerated life test for application to high voltage firing unit. Failure mode of mica capacitor is a decrease of insulation resistance and its final dielectric breakdown. Main constants of accelerated life model were derived experimentally and voltage constant and activation energy were 5.28 and 0.805 eV respectively. Lifetime of mica capacitor at normal use condition was calculated to be 38.5 years by acceleration factor, 496, and lifetime at accelerated condition and this long lifetime confirmed that mica high voltage capacitor could be applied for firing unit.

  • This study aimed to develop reference materials (RMs) that are chemically stable and can simulate the flow characteristics of cement paste. To this end, the candidate components of RMs were selected considering the currently required properties of RMs. Limestone, slag, silica, and kaolin were selected as substitutes for cement, while glycerol and corn syrup were selected as matrix fluids. Moreover, distilled water was used for mixing. To select the combinations of materials that meet all the required properties of RMs, flow characteristics were first analyzed. The results revealed that silica and kaolin exhibited bilateral nonlinearity. When an analysis was conducted over time, slag exhibited chemical reactions, including strength development. Moreover, fungi were observed in all mixtures with corn syrup. On the other hand, the combination of limestone, glycerol, and water exhibited a performance that met all the required properties of RMs. Thus, limestone, glycerol, and water were selected as the components of the RMs. When the influence of each component of the RMs on flow characteristics was analyzed, it was found that limestone affects the yield value, while the ratio of water and glycerol affects the plastic viscosity. Based on this, it was possible to select the mixing ratios for the RMs that can simulate the flow characteristics of cement paste under each mixing ratio. This relationship was established as an equation, which was verified under various mixing ratios. Finally, when the flow characteristics were analyzed under various temperature conditions, cement paste and the RMs exhibited similar tendencies in terms of flow characteristics. This indicated that the combinations of the selected materials could be used as RMs that can simulate the flow characteristics of cement paste with constant quality under various mixing ratio conditions and construction environment conditions.

  • The global increase in population and subsequent scarcity of terrestrial living spaces necessitates exploration of alternative habitats. Research into the development of underwater living areas provides promising avenues for the expansion of human living spaces and the use of marine environments. This study focuses on the failure envelope of suction caisson foundations subjected to combined loads in a marine setting, utilizing finite element analysis. The foundation is assumed to be embedded in clay characterized by a linear increase in undrained shear strength with depth, employing the von Mises constitutive model for the clay. The resulting failure envelope is represented as a tilted ellipse which expands as the undrained shear strength increases, maintaining a constant ratio between the major and minor axes. A comparative analysis of two suction caisson foundations with varying length-to-diameter ratios revealed that this ratio influences the dimensions of the failure envelope, with a tendency for the major-to-minor axis ratio to increase as the length-to-diameter ratio increases. These findings are critical for the design of suction caisson foundations in offshore environments.
