  • Objective: Broilers show clear preference towards red color light (RL). However setting of an optimum light intensity is difficult since dim intensities that favor growth reduce welfare. This experiment was conducted to test the most effective RL intensity regimen (Dim [5 lux; DI] vs high [320 lux; HI]) in combination applied at different growth stages that favors for both performance and welfare. Methods: Complete randomize design was adopted with 6 replicates. Treatments were; T1 = early DI (8-21 d)+latter HI (22-35 d); T2 = early DI (8-28 d)+latter HI (29-35 d), T3 = early HI (8-21 d)+latter DI (22-35 d), T4 = early HI (8-28 d)+latter DI (29-35 d) and T5 = control (white light; WT) (8-35 d) at medium intensity (20 lux). Body weight (BW), weight gain (WG), water/feed intake and ratio, feed conversion ratios (FCR) were assessed. Common behaviours (15) were recorded by scan sampling method. Lameness, foot pad dermatitis, breast blisters, hock burning damage were assessed as welfare parameters. Fear reactions were tested using Tonic Immobility Test. Ocular and carcass evaluations were done. Meat and tibiae were analyzed for fat and bone ash respectively. Results: On 35 d, the highest BW ($2,155.72{\pm}176g$), WG ($1,967.78{\pm}174g$) were recorded by T2 compared to WT ($BW_{WT}=1,878.22{\pm}155$, $WG_{WT}=1,691.83{\pm}160$). But, application of RL, either DI, or HI during early/latter stage had no significant effect on FCR. Under HI, birds showed much higher active behaviours. DI encourages eating. Though LI changed from DI to HI, same trend could be seen even under HI. The highest leg strength ($218.5{\pm}120s$) was recorded by T2. The lowest leg strength ($64.58{\pm}33s$) and the highest ocular weight ($2.48{\pm}1g$) were recorded by T1. Significantly (p<0.05) the highest skin weight ($162.17{\pm}6g$) but the lowest fat% in meat ($13.03%{\pm}5%$) was recorded by T2. Conclusion: Early exposure to DI-RL up to 28 days followed by exposure to HI-RL is the most favorable lighting regimen for optimizing production, better welfare of broilers and improving health benefits of meat.

  • This paper investigates the caharactheristics of the earth pressure magnigue and distribution in jointed rockmass for a safe and economic design and construction of earth retaining structures installed in rock stratum. For this purpose, this study will first investigate the limitations and problems of the existing earth pressure studies and then to overcome them th study will conduct the discontinuum numerical parametric studies based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM), which can consider the joint characteristics in rock stratum. The controlled parameters include rock type and joint conditions (joint shear strength and joint angle), and the magnitude and distribution characteristics of earth pressure have been investigated considering the interactions between the ground and the retaining structures. In addition, the comparison between the earth pressures induced in rock stratum and Peck's earth pressure for soil ground has been carried out. From the comparison, it is found that the earth pressure magnitude and distribution in jointed rockmass has been highly affected by rock type and joint condition and has shown different characteristics compared with the Peck's empirical earth pressure. This result would hereafter be utilized as an important information and a useful data for the assessment of earth pressure for designing a retaining structures installed in jointed rockmass.

  • In this study, the design analysis and the explosion welding were made into a clad sheet by the convergence method in order to solve the problem of heat transfer to the guide due to the heating of the 3D printer heating block. The shear strength of the clad plate material was tested and the results were analyzed by thermal analysis, thermal conductivity and thermal imaging. The following conclusions were obtained. 3D modeling of the heating block made of copper and titanium clad plate material The thermal analysis showed that the surface temperature of the filament guide area was lower than the heating block surface temperature. The average shear strength of copper and titanium clad plate material was measured and the average value of 195.6MPa was obtained. The thermal conductivity of the heating block made of copper and titanium clad plate material was measured three times and the average value was $62.52W/m{\cdot}K$. The surface temperature of the heating block made of copper and titanium clad plate material was measured by a thermal imaging camera at a maximum of $107.3^{\circ}C$ and $183.2^{\circ}C$ at the filament guide. The temperature distribution was $89^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the existing filament.

  • The design of new bioactive scaffolds offering physiologic environment for tissue formation is an important frontier in biomaterials research. In this study, we performed compressive strength, water-uptake ability, and SEM analysis for physical property assessment of 3-D silk/PLGA scaffold, and investigated the adhesion, proliferation, phenotype maintenance, and inflammatory responses of RAW 264.7 and NIH/3T3 for cell compatibility. Scaffolds were prepared by the solvent casting/salt leaching method and their compressive strength and water-uptake ability were excellent at 20 wt% silk content. Result of cell compatibility assay showed that inflammatory responses distinctly decreased, and initial adhesion and proliferation were maximized at 20 wt% silk content. In conclusion, we suggest that silk/PLGA scaffolds may be useful to tissue engineering applications.

  • Due to heavy rainfall and typhoons caused by climate change, it has become common to witness heavy rain that exceeds the design frequency of agricultural reservoirs. This has brought greater attention to the safety of irrigation facilities including agricultural reservoirs. Out of approximately 17,740 reservoirs available in Korea, 83.87% were built before 1970. To ensure the safety of these old reservoirs, their embankments are being repaired and reinforced using various techniques. Among these techniques, using the cement-bentonite cutoff wall makes it possible to construct diaphragm walls with slurry composed of cement and bentonite, while excavation. The advantages of this technique include that it is simple and fast, and ensures the uniformity of cutoff walls by enabling the immediate application of the replacement method to excavation areas; thus excellent performance is guaranteed. However, despite these advantages, the technique is not commonly used in Korea. Thus, this study investigated the changes in strength and permeability by varying the mix ratio of cement and bentonite. As a major experimental results, when the cement of 200 kg/m3 and the bentonite of 60 to 80 kg/m3 is most suitable for the repair and reinforcement of the reservoir embankments.

  • The standard prestressed concrete I-girder bridge (PSC I-girder bridge) is one of the most prevalent types for small and medium bridges in Korea. When determining the member forces in a section to assess the safety of girder in this type of bridge, the general practice is to use the simplified practical equations or the live load distribution factors proposed in design standards rather than the precise analysis through the finite element method or so. Meanwhile, the live load distribution factors currently used in Korean design practice are just a reflection of overseas research results or design standards without alterations. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an equation of the live load distribution factors fit for the design conditions of Korea, considering the standardized section of standard PSC I-girder bridges and the design strength of concrete. In this study, to develop an equation of the live load distribution factors, a parametric analysis and sensitivity analysis were carried out on the parameters such as width of bridge, span length, girder spacing, width of traffic lane, etc. As a result, the major variables to determine the size of distribution factors were girder spacing, overhang length and span length in case of external girders. For internal adjacent girders, the determinant factors were girder spacing, overhang length, span length and width of bridge. For internal girders, the factors were girder spacing, width of bridge and span length. Then, an equation of live load distribution factors was developed through the multiple linear regression analysis on the results of parametric analysis. When the actual practice engineers design a bridge with the equation of live load distribution factors developed here, they will determine the design of member forces ensuring the appropriate safety rate more easily. Moreover, in the preliminary design, this model is expected to save much time for the repetitive design to improve the structural efficiency of PSC I-girder bridges.

  • A new form of I-type PSC bridge girder, which has hole in the web, is proposed in this paper. Three different concepts were combined and implemented in the design. First of all, a girder was precast at a manufacturing plant as divided pieces and assembled at the construction site using post-tensioning method, and the construction period at the site will be reduced dramatically. In this way, the quality of concrete can be assured at the manufacturing factory and concrete curing can be well controlled, and the spliced girder segments can be moved to the construction site without a transportation problem. Secondly, a numerous number of holes was made in the web of the girder. This reduces the self-weight of the girder. But more important thing related to the holes is that about half of the total anchorages can be moved from the girder ends into individual holes. The magnitude of negative moment developed at girder ends will be reduced. Also, since the longitudinal compressive stresses are reduced at ends, thick end diaphragm is not necessary. Thirdly, Prestressing force was introduced into the member through multiple stages. This concept of multi-stage prestressing method overcomes the prestressing force limit restrained by the allowable stresses at each loading stage, and maximizes the magnitude of applicable prestressing force. It makes the girder longer and shallower. Two 50 meter long full scale girders were fabricated and tested. One of them was non-spliced, or monolithic girder, made as one piece from the beginning, and the other one was assembled using post-tensioning method from five pieces of segments. It was found from the result that monolithic and spliced girder show similar load-deflection relationships and crack patterns. Girders satisfied specific girder design specification in flexural strength, deflection, and live load deflection control limit. Both spliced and monolithic holed web post-tensioned girders can be used to achieve span lengths of more than 50m with the girder height of 2 m.

  • RC flat plate, which has no large flexural stiffness by boundary beams, may be governed by serviceability as well as strength condition. A construction sequence and its impact on distributions of construction loads among slabs tied by shores are decisive factors on immediate and long term performances of flat plate. The over-loading and tensile cracking in early-aged slabs significantly increase the deflection of flat plate system. In this study, for slab deflections, the practical analysis scheme using a linear analysis program is formulated with considering construction sequence and concrete cracking effects. The concept of the effective moment of inertia in calculating deflections of one-way bending member, that is presented in structural design codes, is extended to the finite element analysis of the two-way slab system of flat plates. Effects of over-loads during construction on deflections of flat plate system are analyzed by applying the proposed practical analysis scheme into the critical construction load conditions calculated from the simplified method.

  • For two input ESD protection schemes utilizing the NMOS protection device or the lvtr_thyristor protection device, which is suitable for high-frequency CMOS ICs, we attempt an in-depth comparison study on the HBM ESD protection level in terms of lattice heating inside the protection devices and the peak voltage applied to the gate oxides in the input buffer through DC, mixed-mode transient, and AC analyses utilizing the 2-dimensional device simulator. For this purpose, we suggest a method for the equivalent circuit modeling of the input HBM test environment for the CMOS chip equipped with the input ESD protection circuit. And by executing mixed-mode simulations including up to four protection devices and analyzing the results for five different test modes, we attempt a detailed analysis on the problems which can be occurred in a real HBM test. In this procedure, we explain about the strength and weakness of the two protection schemes as an input protection circuit for high-frequency ICs, and suggest guidelines relating to the design of the protection devices.

  • In this study, the strain energy density, stress and deformation behaviors have been analyzed as functions of a thickness and a force area of protective helmets with and without an extruder on the top of the shell structure using the finite element method. The strain energy density in which is related to the absorption capacity of an impact energy transfer is one of a key element of the helmet safety. The FEM analyzed results show that when the impulsive force of 4,540N is applied on the top surface of the helmets, the maximum stress is linearly reduced for an increased area of impact forces. But, the maximum strain energy density has been reduced for the increased force area. The reduced strain energy density may increase the impulsive forces transferred to the head and neck of helmet wearers, which may decrease the impact energy absorption safety of the helmets. In thus, it is safer design of the helmet in which has an extruded structure on the summit surface, but the modified helmet may decrease the impact energy absorption capacity.
