  • An excessive ground displacement occurs with excavating tunnel in a fault zone because the fault has properties of soft ground in generally. It may have had a bad influence to adjacent structure. So, rapid reduction of ground strength by groundwater inflow should be prevented. It must be established for an impervious and reinforcing effect of ground to ensure a tunnel stability. The ground settlement and reinforcing effects were estimated by numerical analyses on tunnel through 570 m sector in Yangsan fault zone of Keongbu high-speed railway. Settlements evaluated by numerical analysis is similar to those calculated by using equation of Loganathan & Poulo. It was shown that reliable estimate of ground settlement by applying a prediction equation is possible. Applicability of adopted tunnel reinforcement method in fault zone was investigated by results of pilot construction and numerical analysis. Results from this study indicate that the adopted reinforcement method make tunnel displacements and member stresses restrain in design criteria.

  • One of the most performed action in daily life is standing up from sitting position. As the population of the world is aging at the high rates, people may face problems with reduced muscle strength as well as psychological changes. This can lead elderly people having difficulties with standing up from chair. Now, with the aging trend worldwide, products are being developed that can support the lives of the elderly. This study examines the distribution of hip pressure in relation to the seating positions of the standing assistance seats under development to prevent standing up accidents in older adults. The currently developing standing assistant chair designed to tilt to a maximum angle of 25 degrees. At over $25^{\circ}$, design considers that older people are at risk of thrown back out of that force and that the forces exerted on their arms and legs can be a significant burden to older people. By considering danger of higher than $25^{\circ}$ for older people which is experimented in the basis of static capturing approach in previous papers, it is experimented people with age group of 20~60 on $0^{\circ}$ to $25^{\circ}$ tilting angle on the basis of dynamic capturing method in order to pick convenient angle of inclination. Moreover, tried to find the optimum angle by comparing the hip pressure distribution when seated at the edge of the seat and at the center of the seat with the pressure distribution sensor.

  • For reliable determination of mechanical characteristics of adhesively bonded joints used e.g. as input data for computer-aided design of complex components, the thick-adherend tensile-shear test according to ISO 11003-2 is the most important material testing method. Although the total displacement of the joint is measured across the polymer layer directly in the overlap zone in order to minimize the influence of the stepped adherends, the substrate deformation must be taken into account within the framework of the evaluation of the shear modulus and the maximum shear strain, at least when high-strength adhesives are applied. In the standard ISO 11003-2 version of 1993, it was prescribed to perform the substrate deformation correction by means of testing a one-piece reference specimen. The authors, however, pointed to the excessive demands on the measuring accuracy of the extensometers connected with this technique in industrial practice and alternatively proposed a numerical deformation analysis of a dummy specimen. This idea of a mathematical correction was included in the revised ISO 11003-2 version of 2001 but in the simplified form of an analytical method based on Hooke's law of elasticity for small strains. In the present work, it is shown that both calculation techniques yield considerably discordant results. As experimental assessment would require high-precision distance determination (e.g. laser extensometer), finite element analyses of the deformation behavior of the bonded joint are performed in order to estimate the accuracy of the obtained substrate deformation corrections. These simulations reveal that the numerical correction technique based on the finite element deformation modeling of the reference specimen leads to considerably more realistic results.

  • This paper is concerned with geotextiles bonded chemically with geogrid to form a geocomposite. Geotextiles, thermally bonded and non-woven, play an important role as a separator. Also, this study investigates the resistance to the application environment of geotextile composites. Here, numerous tests have been performed and it was revealed from experimental results that thermally bonded geotextile in geosynthetic composites showed superior characteristics to that manufactured from needle punched non-woven method in terms of tensile strength, tensile strain and high separation performance. It was noted from experiments that the geotextile prepared for separation purpose and manufactured in a thermal bonding method showed relatively low permittivity so that it could be used as a smooth separator. In addition, PVA geotextile/HDPE geomembrane composites were designed and manufactured to investigate the waste landfill related properties. Numerous experiments have been performed and experimental results were summarized to evaluate practical applicability of PVA geotextile/HDPE geomembrane composites. Among the properties of proposed geomembrane composites, evaluation has been focused on the investigation of mechanical properties, AOS (apparent opening size), permittivity and ultraviolet stability.

  • In this study, we suggest the new floating PV generation structure which is improved the structural and economical efficiency compared with the system developed in the previous research. Pultruded FRP has superior physical and chemical material properties compared with those of conventional structural materials. Especially, pultruded FRP has an excellent corrosion-resistance, light-weight, and it also has high specific strength and stiffness which are highly appreciated for the design and fabrication of floating PV generation structure under harsh environmental condition. In this study, structural analysis using the finite element method has been performed to investigate the safety of new floating PV generation structure and newly applied structural members.

  • The study of surface ground reinforcing method is supposed to be considered preferentially is not satisfied and also doesn't contemplate plastic flow because of repetitive drive of construction equipment. Also, Terzaghi's bearing-capacity equation and Yamanouchi's suggestion have been used to design the surface reinforcement, but most engineers depend on their experience and cases constructed before because of dispersed variables and inappropriate bearing-capacity factors. Hence, plate load test and repetitive plate load test were performed in the field which is reinforced with geotextile, Geogrid whose tensile strength are 200kN/m, 100kN/m and bamboo($0.4m{\times}0.4m$). The object of this study is to evaluate bearing capacity and behaviour of surface ground and to compare each reinforcement form test results. From the results bearing capacity ratio increased by a maximum of 1.5 times with bamboo reinforcement method comparing to others.

  • To analyze several defects and residual stress in sintering of layer structure materials, multiayer materials with TZP/SUS and ZT/SUS, and bilayer materials with porcelain/alumina and porcelain/Y-TZP were fabricated by sintering method. Multilayer materials prepared by pressureless sintering show the sintering defect such as warping, splitting, cracking originated from the difference of sintering shrinkage between each layer, which could be controlled by the adjustment of number and thickness in interlayer. In tape casting, a certain pressure given during sintering relaxed the sintering defects, specially warping. The residual stress in bilayer was examined with Vickers indentation method. A small tensile stress in porcelain/alumina and a large compressive stress in porcelain/Y-TZP were generated on the porcelain interface due to the thermal expansion mismatch, which affected the strength of bilayer materials. As a consequence, the sintering defects of multilayer materials and the residual stresses of bilayer materials were dominantly influenced on material design and starting material constants.

  • In this paper, an adaptive digital automatic gain control(AGC) algorithm with two stages is proposed. AGC technique is crucial for mobile communication equipment because path loss in wireless channel and gain fluctuation in receiver front-end continuously change the received signal strength. Furthermore, adaptive criteria should be applied to the design of AGC algorithm in order to support many waveforms with one SDR communication device. With these reasons, a two-stage structure is proposed to satisfy both flexibility and adaptiveness. Compared with conventional method, it also requires shorter convergence time. Numerical results show that the gain value of variable gain amplifier(VGA) is converged within proper time and proposed scheme controls the input level of analog to digital converter(ADC) to be stable during long range of time.

  • A new prediction model is derived for the uplift capacity of suction caissons using a hybrid method coupling genetic programming (GP) and simulated annealing (SA), called GP/SA. The predictor variables included in the analysis are the aspect ratio of caisson, shear strength of clayey soil, load point of application, load inclination angle, soil permeability, and loading rate. The proposed model is developed based on well established and widely dispersed experimental results gathered from the literature. To verify the applicability of the proposed model, it is employed to estimate the uplift capacity of parts of the test results that are not included in the modeling process. Traditional GP and multiple regression analyses are performed to benchmark the derived model. The external validation of the GP/SA and GP models was further verified using several statistical criteria recommended by researchers. Contributions of the parameters affecting the uplift capacity are evaluated through a sensitivity analysis. A subsequent parametric analysis is carried out and the obtained trends are confirmed with some previous studies. Based on the results, the GP/SA-based solution is effectively capable of estimating the horizontal, vertical and inclined uplift capacity of suction caissons. Furthermore, the GP/SA model provides a better prediction performance than the GP, regression and different models found in the literature. The proposed simplified formulation can reliably be employed for the pre-design of suction caissons. It may be also used as a quick check on solutions developed by more time consuming and in-depth deterministic analyses.

  • Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) consist of a work platform, extending structure, and chassis, and are used to move persons to working positions. MEWPs are useful but are composed of pieces of equipment, and accidents do occur owing to equipment defects. Among these defects, accidents caused by the fracture of bolts fixed to the extension structure and swing system are increasing. This paper presents a failure analysis of the fixing bolts of MEWP. Standard procedure for failure analysis was employed in this investigation. Visual inspection, chemical analysis, tensile strength measurement, microstructural characterization, fractography analysis by Optical Microscope(OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), and finite element analysis (FEA) were used to analyze the failure of the fixing bolts. Using this failure analysis approach, we found the root cause of failure and proposed a means for solving this type of failure in the future. First, the chemical composition of the fixing bolt is obtained by a spectroscopy chemical analysis method, which determined that the chemical composition matched the required standard. The tensile test showed that the tensile and yield strengths were within the required capacity. The stress analysis was carried out at five different boom angles, and it was determined that the fixing bolt of MEWP can withstand the loads at all the boom angles. The outcomes of the fatigue analysis revealed that the fixing bolt fails before reaching the design requirements. The results of the fatigue analysis showed primarily that the failure of the fixing bolt was due to fatigue. A visual inspection of the fractured section of the fixing bolt also confirmed the fatigue failure. We propose a method to prevent failure of the fixing bolt of the MEWP from four different standpoints: the manufacturer, safety certification authority, safety inspection agency, and owner.
