The mear field structure of round turbulent jets with initially asymmetric velocity distributions is investigated experimentally. Experiments are carried out using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometry system to measure streamwise velocity in the jets. The measurements are undertaken across the jet at various streamwise stations in a range starting from the jet exit plane and up to a downstream location of twelve diameters. The experimental results include the distributions of mean and instantaneous velocities, vorticity field, turbulence intensity, and the Reynolds shear stresses. The asymmetry of the jet exit plane was obtained by using circular cross-section pipes with a bend upstream of the exit. There pipes used here include a straight pipe, and 90 and 160 degree-bend pipes. Therefore, at the upstream of the upstream of the pipe exit, secondary flow through the bend mean streamwise velocity distribution could be controlled by changing the curvature of pipes. The jets into the atmosphere have two levels of initial velocity skewness in addition to an axisymmetric jet from a straight pipe. In case of the curved pipe, a six diameter-long straight pipe section follows the bend upstream of the exit. The Reynolds number based on the exit bulk velocity is 13,400. The results indicate that the near field structure is considerably modified by the skewness of an initial mean velocity distribution. As the skewness increases, the decay rate of mean velocity at the centerline also increases.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of local ultrasonic forcing on a turbulent boundary layer. Stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) was used to probe the characteristics of the flow. A ultrasonic forcing system was made by adhering six ultrasonic transducers to the local flat plate. Cavitation which generates uncountable minute air-bubbles having fast wall normal velocity occurs when ultrasonic was projected into water. The SPIV results showed that the wall normal mean velocity is increased in a boundary layer dramatically and the streamwise mean velocity is reduced. The skin friction coefficient ($C_{f}$) decreases $60\%$ and gradually recovers at the downstream. The ultrasonic forcing reduces wall-region streamwise turbulent intensity, however, streamwise turbulent intensity is increased away from the wall. Wall-normal turbulent intensity is almost the same near the wall but it increases away from the wall, In tile vicinity of the wall, Reynold shear stress, sweep strength and production of turbulent kinetic energy were decreased. This suggests that the streamwise vortical structures are lifted by ultrasonic forcing and then skin friction is reduced.

This paper presents a direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows over a bump in an open channel to examine the turbulence characteristics near divergent waves emanating from the bump and to investigate the interaction of the turbulences with the divergent waves. To verify the reliability of the simulations, the mean velocity profile and root-mean-square of velocity fluctuations are compared with previous data. The anisotropic invariant maps show that the ratio of the streamwise to spanwise velocity fluctuations plays an important role in characterizing the anisotropic nature of the separated shear layer behind the bump in the vicinity of the free surface. The vortex identification discloses a large-scale streamwise vortical structure from the mean velocity field and a cluster of small coherent structures from the instantaneous velocity field, which are responsible for the anisotropic characteristics of the turbulence beneath the free surface.
In this study, the modification of turbulent boundary layer flow by local wall vibration is investigated. The wall is locally vibrated using a wall deformation actuator, which moves up and down at the frequencies of 100Hz and 50Hz. Simultaneous measurements of the streamwise velocities in the spanwise direction are performed at several wall-normal and streamwise locations using an in-house multi-channel hot wire anemometer and a spanwise hot-wire-probe rake. The mean velocity is reduced in most places due to the wall vibration and its reduced amount becomes small as flow goes downstream. Interestingly, the mean velocity is found to increase very near the wall and near the actuator. This is due to the motion induced by the streamwise vortices which are generated by the downward motion of the actuator. In case of the streamwise velocity fluctuations, their magnitude increases as compared to the unperturbed turbulent boundary layer, and the increased amount becomes small as the flow moves downstream. The modified flow field at the forcing frequency of 50Hz is not much different from that of 100Hz, except the reduced amount of modification.

An analytic approach is attempted to predict the amplification of turbulence in compressible flows experiencing one-dimensional and axisymmetric bulk dilatation. The variations of vortex radius and vorticity are calculated, and then the amplification of turbulence is obtained from them by tracking three representative vortices. For a one-dimensionally compressed flow, the present analysis slightly underestimates the amplification of velocity fluctuations and turbulent kinetic energy, relative to that of rapid distortion theory in the solenoidal limit. For an axisymmetrically distorted flow, the amplification of velocity fluctuations and turbulent kinetic energy depend not only on the density ratio but also on the ratio of streamwise mean velocities, which represents streamwise vortex contraction/stretching. In all flows considered, the amplification of turbulence is dictated by the mean density ratio. In the axisymmetric flow, streamwise vortex stretching/contraction, however, alters the amplification slightly.
The present study aims to investigate the interaction of a wire-type turbulence stimulator and the laminar boundary layer on a flat plate by flow field measurement. For the towing tank tests, a one-dimensional Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) attached on a two-axis traverse was used to measure the streamwise velocity component of the boundary layer flow in zero pressure gradient, disturbed by a turbulence stimulator. The wire diameter was 0.5 and 1.0 mm according to the recommended procedures and guidelines suggested by the International Towing Tank Conference. Turbulence development by the stimulator was identified by the skin friction coefficient, mean and Root Mean Square (RMS) of the streamwise velocity. The laminar boundary layer with the absence of the wire-type stimulator was similar to the Blasius solution and previous experimental results. By the stimulator, the mean and RMS of the streamwise velocity were increased near the wall, showing typical features of the fully developed turbulent boundary layer. The critical Reynolds number was reduced from 2.7×105 to 1.0×105 by the disturbances caused by the wire. As the wire diameter and the roughness Reynolds number (Rek) increased, the disturbances by the stimulator increased RMS of the streamwise velocity than turbulent boundary layer.

An experimental research was performed to study turbulent flow characteristic in a $90^{\circ}$ circular bend by using the PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) method, this study found the time-mean velocity distribution, time-mean turbulent intensity with turbulent flow for Re = 10,000, 15,000, 20,000, and 25,000 along the test bend. It was found that the highest streamwise velocity of turbulent flow occurs near y/D = 0.5 and the flow moved to y/D =0.15. The peak turbulence intensity shifted toward the concave wall from $\theta= 45 and as \theta$ increased. the intensity decayed along the test tube.
The near wake behind a sinusoidal cylinder at Re=5200 has been investigated using DPIV system. The velocity fields, streamlines and vorticity contours of the mean flow were compared at the nodal, saddle and middle planes with those of a right circular cylinder. For the sinusoidal cylinder, the vortex core moves downstream and the vortex formation region is expanded in streamwise direction while suppressed in transverse direction at the nodal plane. At the saddle and the middle plane the vortex spread in both streamwise and transverse directions, forming the maximum vortex region at the saddle plane.
