This study examines the accuracy of large-eddy simulation (LES) to simulate the flow around a large irregular sloping complex terrain. Typically, real built up environments are surrounded by complex terrain geometries with many features. The complex terrain surrounding The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology campus was modelled and the flow over an uphill slope was simulated. The simulated results, including mean velocity profiles and turbulence intensities, were compared with the flow characteristics measured in a wind tunnel model test. Given the size of the domain and the corresponding constraints on the resolution of the simulation, the mean velocity components within the boundary layer flow, especially in the stream-wise direction were found to be reasonably well replicated by the LES. The turbulence intensity values were found to differ from the wind tunnel results in the building recirculation zones, mostly due to the constraints placed on spatial and temporal resolutions. Based on the validated mean velocity profile results, the flow-structure interactions around these buildings and the surrounding terrain were examined.
We obtained a total of 36 GPS coordinates of the seven bat species of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Myotis ikonnikovi, M. nattereri, M. petax, Murina ussuriensis, Plecotus auritus, and Pipistrellus abramus. Characteristics of forests (forest type, age class, DBH class and crown density), terrain (aspect, slope and distance from mountain stream) and disturbance factors (distance from human residential areas and distance from cultivated areas) that bats have used as their habitats were revealed from the GIS analysis based on GPS coordinates of the 36 positions that bats were found. The bats-preferred forest type is broad-leaf forests (43%) with the trees of the 2th (31%) and 5th (31%) age class, the trees of sapling (36%) and large DBH class (31%), and sparse crown density (67%). Bats prefer the slop direction of the east (39%), the gradient below $15^{\circ}$ (61%), the ranges within 200 m from the mountain streams (92%), the ranges within 200 m near roads (89%), the ranges of 200-400 m from human residential areas (28%), and the ranges within 200 m from cultivated areas (36%).
Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damange, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle inside feed-water heater installed downstream of the turbine extraction stream line. At that point, the extract steam from the turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows to reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of feedwater heaters may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. In this paper, to compare wall thinning range according to change entrance nozzle diameter and position with reference numerical analysis model's wall thinning range, various numerical analysis models applied. In case of changing diameter, four different diameter is applied. And a side of nozzle position, two different position-vertical type and parallel type-is applied. And then this paper describes operation of numerical analysis which is composed similar condition with real feed water heater. In conclusion, this study shows effective design for shall wall thinning by changing nozzle diameter and position.
The groundwater system of the Cheonggyecheon watershed is very complicated because it is influenced by many factors such as pumping out, groundwater leakages into subway stations, civil use of groundwater, and leaking water from water supply and sewage lines. So the characterization and evaluation of the groundwater flow and contaminant transport in the Cheonggyecheon water system is quite a difficult task. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence on the‘groundwater’ below the Cheonggyecheon watershed by the‘maintenance water’on the Cheonggyecheon stream after the restoration. We have so far collected groundwater quality data, hydrogeologic aquifer parameters, and the amount of leakages into subway stations and its influence on the groundwater system. Results show that groundwater level was influenced by the direction and depth of subway tunnel. This study will continue to monitor groundwater quality, a water level fluctuation relation between rainfall and groundwater recharge for further investigation of the groundwater flow system in the Cheonggyecheon watershed.
Phase averaged velocity fields in the near wake region behind a square cylinder have been (successfully) obtained using randomly sampled PIV data sets. The Reynolds number based on the flow velocity and the vertex height was 3,900. To identify the phase information, we examined the magnitude of circulation and the center of peak vorticity. The center of vorticity was estimated from lowpass filtered vorticity contours (LES decomposition) adopting a sub-pixel searching algirithm. Due to the sinusoidal nature of firculation which is closely related to the instantaneous vorticity, the location of peak voticity fits well with a sine curve of the circulation magnitude. Conditionally-averaged velocity fields represent the barman vortex shedding phenomenon very well within 5 degrees phase uncertainty. The oscillating nature of the separated shear layer and the separation bubble at the top surface are clearly observed. With the hot-wire measurements of Strouhal frequency, we found thats the convection velocity changes its magnitude very rapidly from 25 to 75 percent of the free stream velocity along the streamwise direction when the flow passes by the recirculation region.
In some portions of nuclear piping systems, stratification phenomena may occur due to the density difference between hot and cold stream. When the temperature difference is large, the stratified flow under diverse operating conditions can produce high thermal stress, which leads to unanticipated piping integrity issues. The objectives of this research are to examine controvertible numerical factors such as model size, grid resolution, turbulent parameters, governing equation, inflow direction and pipe wall. Parametric three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics analyses were carried out to quantify effects of these parameters on the accuracy of temperature profiles in a typical nuclear piping with complex geometries. Then, as a key finding, it was recommended to use optimized mesh of real piping with the conjugated heat transfer condition for accurate thermal stratification analyses.
To determine nocturnal inversion characteristics at the leeward side of high-rise building, air temperature data were observed at 10 minute interval from February 22, 2010 to April 15, 2010. The observed data were compared, analyzed and examined to illustrate air temperature differences between the roof (XAR) and surface (XAG) of X apartment. The wind speed, wind direction and precipitation data were also observed at XAR and YJL (Yangjae Stream) sites at the same time. After the analysis, the maximum nocturnal inversion was observed by $4.0^{\circ}C$ at 3:40, 3:50, 4:10 on February 24th 2010, at that time the weather condition was clear and weak wind. Air temperature inversions at the leeward side of high-rise building were observed on whole day in wintertime and air temperature inversion intensity was also higher than other nearby area (SMG).
Three major physiological functions of nose can be described as air-conditioning, filtering and smelling. Detailed knowledge of airflow characteristics in nasal cavities is essential to understanding of the physiological and pathological aspects of nasal breathing. In our laboratory, a series of experimental investigations have been conducted on the airflows in normal and abnormal nasal cavity models by means of PIV under both constant and periodic flow conditions. In this work, more specifically experimental and numerical results on the surgically modified inferior turbinate model were presented. With the high resolution CT data and a careful treatment of the model surface under the ENT doctor's advice yielded quite sophisticated cavity models for the PIV experiment. Physiological nature of the airflow was discussed in terms of velocity distribution and vortical structure for constant inspirational flow. Since the inferior and middle turbinate are key determinants of nasal airflow, the turbinectomy obviously altered the main stream direction. This phenomenon may cause local changes in physiological function and the flow resistance.
Water quality in the Daecheong reservoir has been deteriorated by algal bloom every year. Algal bloom is propagated from eutrophicated tributary into the main body of the reservoir during the wet season. Nutrients from diffuse sources trigger the propagation of the algal bloom. This study is aimed to analyze relationship between the water current by the simulation and algae transport from the main body in the Daecheong reservoir including tributary where algal bloom has occurred seriously every year. Water quality model CE-QUAL-W2 was applied to analyze water movement in draught season (2001) and flooding season (2003). The result of simulation corresponded with the observed water elevation level, 63~80 m and showed stratification of the Daecheong reservoir. In the draught season, as velocity and direction off low in the reservoir was estimated to affect algae transport including nutrient supply from small tributary, algal blooms occurred in the stagnate zone of middle stream of the reservoir. On the other hand, in the flooding season, it was resulted in nutrient transport from upstream of main reservoir and nutrients were delivered up to downstream by fast water velocity. In result, algal blooms occurred in stagnate zone of reservoir downstream as the current of downstream was retarded according to dam outflow control.
