A theoretical analysis is performed to describe the qualitative behavior of transient buoyant flows in a vertical channel. Consideration is given to the case of a fluid with a pre-existing stratification. The fluid motion is generated by giving impulsive anti-symmetric step-changes in temperature at the vertical left ad right sidewalls. The qualitative character of the flow is shown to be classified in the Rayleigh number (Ra)-Prandtl number ($sigma$) diagram. The transitory approach to the steady state can be monotonic or oscillatory, depending on ($sigma$-1)$^2$$pi$$^4$ 4$sigma$$R_a$. The prominent characteristics of time-dependent flow are discussed for large $R_a$. The profiles of temperature and velocity in the transient phase are depicted, which disclose distinctive time scales of motion. The transient process is shown to be sensitive to the Prandtl number. The detailed evolutions of flow and temperature fields are illustrated for large $R_a$.
The flow regimes of continuously stratified flow over a double mountain and the effects of a double mountain on wave breaking, upstream blocking, and severe downslope windstorms are investigated using a mesoscale numerical model (ARPS). According to the occurrence or non-occurrence of wave breaking and upstream blocking, three different flow regimes are identified over a double mountain. Higher critical Froude numbers are required for wave breaking and upstream blocking initiation for a double mountain than for an isolated mountain. This means that the nonlinearity and blocking effect for a double mountain is larger than that for an isolated mountain. As the separation distance between two mountains decreases, the degree of flow nonlinearity increases, while the blocking effect decreases. A rapid increase of the surface horizontal velocity downwind of each mountain near the critical mountain height for wave breaking initiation indicates that severe downslope windstorms are enhanced by wave breaking. For the flow with wave breaking, the numerically calculated surface drag is much larger than theoretically calculated one because the region with the maximum negative perturbation pressure moves from the top to the downwind slope of each mountain as the internal jump propagating downwind occurs.

Experimental investigation have been made to study the double-diffusive nature of convection of an initially stratified salt-water solution heated from below in a cylindrical cavity. The objective is to examine the process of mixed-layer formation, the flow phenomena, the heat transfer characteristics, and temperature and concentration distribution according to the changes in the effective Rayleigh number based on the reference height which represents the relation of temperature and concentration gradient. The types of initially formed flow pattern are categorized in three regimes depending on the effective Rayleigh number ; stagnant flow regime, single mixed-layer flow regime and successively formed multiple mixed-layer flow regime. The temperature and concentration profiles are both uniform in each layer due to convective mixing in the layered flow regime, but both linear in stagnant flow regime and single mixed-layer flow regime. At the interface between adjacent layers, the temperature changes smoothly but the concentration changes rapidly. The layers expand by diffusion of concentration through the interface along with its random fluctuation.
An immersed boundary method for simulation of density-stratified flows is developed and applied to computation of viscous flows over two-dimensional obstacles in a bounded domain under stable density stratification. Density sources/sinks are introduced on the body surface. Two obstacle shapes are used, a vertical barrier and a smooth cosine-shaped hill; weak stratification, defined by $K=ND/{\pi}U{\leq}1$, where U, N, and D are the upstream velocity, buoyancy frequency, and domain height, respectively, is considered. The results are consistent with other authors' calculations, and shed light on computation of density-stratified flows in complex geometries.

The Interfacial friction factor for the countercurrent stratified air-wafer flow has been experimentally investigated in nearly horizontal and inclined pipes. The presence of the hydraulic jump may significantly affect both the flow pattern and the interfacial friction factor. The measured values of f$_{i}$ in nearly horizontal and two inclined pipes are of the same order of magnitude but the dependencies of the air and water velocities are slightly different.t.

A method to mitigate the thermal stratification flow of a horizontal pipe line is proposed by heating external bottom of the pipe with electrical heat tracing. Unsteady two dimensional model has been used to numerically investigate an effect of the external Denting to the thermally stratified flow. The dimensionless governing equations are solved by using the control volume formulation and SIMPLE algorithm. Temperature distribution, streamline profile and Nusselt numbers of fluids and pipe walls with time are analyzed in case of externally heating condition. no numerical result of this study shows that the maximum dimensionless temperature difference between the hot and the cold sections of pipe inner wall is 0.424 at dimensionless time 1,500 ann the thermal stratification phenomena is disappeared at about dimensionless time 9,000. This result means that external heat tracing can mitigate the thermal stratification phenomena by lessening $\Delta$$T_{ma}$ about 0.1 and shortening the dimensionless time about 132 in comparison with no external heat tracing.rnal heat tracing.

Piping Systems are usually designed for thermal expansion loads based on uniform temperatures at each cross section. However, in lines with low flow rates such as surge lines and spray lines, large transverse temperature gradients have been observed, resulting in too types of additional thermal stresses : (1) local thermal gradient stresses which are independent of routing and supports and (2) gross bending stresses due to induced pipe curvature which are routing and support system dependent. This paper presents a simplified method for analyzing a PER surge line for stratified flow.

Finite-difference analysis was conducted to study the natural convection of a stably stratified salt-water solution in an annulus due to lateral heating. The main purpose of this study is to examine in detail the multi-layered flow structure. Calculation was thus made for R $a_{\eta}$=2*10$^{5}$ and 6.5*10$^{5}$ . Formation of layered flow structure, merging process of layers, the corresponding temperature and concentration distributions, Nusselt number variations with time are examined. Numerical results show that in each layer, the temperature profile looks 'S`-shaped and the concentration profile is uniform due to the convective mixing. The formation of the roll and the layer is governed by natural convection due to the temperature gradient and the merging process of the layer by diffusion of the concentration.ation.
The purpose of this work is to obtain the experimental data for the forced How dryout heat flux in a heat generating stratified debris bed which simulates the degraded nuclear reactor core after severe accident. The present observations were mainly focused on the effect of coolant mass flux on the dryout heat flux in the stratified debris bed which consists of several layers with selected particle sizes under constant bed depth and temperature of inlet coolant flow conditions. The following results were obtained from this experimental work: (1) The dryout heat flux in the stratified debris bed increases with increase of upward forcing mass flux of coolant. The similar trend of increase rate of dryout heat flux in the stratified bed was observed in the uniform particle size bed. (2) For the comparison of theoretical values and experimental data, the use of surface area mean diameter as a particle diameter was suitable for the calculation of dryout heat flux.
