Characteristics of Surface Strand Orientation and Strand Mat Thickness Variation and Its Effect on the Bending Properties of Commercial OSB

  • The surface and edge structure of OSB is defined by surface strand orientation and strand mat thickness variation parallel to the length of the panel using video-microscope. The bending strength of OSB was correlated with surface strand orientation and decreased with increasing the orientation angle in the direction parallel to length of the panel. Average strand mat thickness variation parallel to the length of the panel did not influence the bending strength, but the bonding characteristics among the outermost strands affects the bending strength of OSB. Hankinson formula can be used to predicts the MOE according to strand orientation in the surface of OSB, and more precise strand alignment and reducing thickness variation should be important in the structural performance of OSB panels.

  • Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is an important engineered wood product used in housing construction which has a lower environmental impact or "carbon footprint." In this paper, reliability and statistical tools are applied to gain insights on the strand thickness of OSB panels. An OSB panel consists of several hundred wood strands that are resinated and pressed. The variability of OSB strand thickness for six manufacturers in the Eastern United States is examined as a whole, as well as individually. Little research exists on OSB strand thickness across mills even though strand thickness variability has been documented in laboratory experiments to greatly influence the dimensional stability of OSB panels. Our aims are to quantify and characterize strand thickness, plus apply reliability techniques, such as Kaplan-Meier curves, to characterize the probability of strand thickness. We further explore graphically and statistically the thickness of the strands.

Hybrid vibration-impedance monitoring in prestressed concrete structure with local strand breakage

  • In this paper, a hybrid vibration-impedance-based damage monitoring approach is experimentally evaluated for prestressed concrete (PSC) structures with local strand breakage. Firstly, the hybrid monitoring scheme is designed to alert damage occurrence from changes in vibration characteristics and to localize strand breakage from changes in impedance signatures. Secondly, a full-scale PSC anchorage is experimented to measure global vibration responses and local impedance responses under a sequence of simulated strand-breakage events. Finally, the measured data are analyzed using the hybrid monitoring framework. The change of structural condition (i.e., damage extent) induced by the local strand breakage is estimated by changes in a few natural frequencies obtained from a few accelerometers in the structure. The damaged strand is locally identified by tomography analysis of impedance features measured via an array of PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) sensors mounted on the anchorage. Experimental results demonstrate that the strand breakage in the PSC structure can be accurately assessed by using the combined vibration and impedance features.

낙엽송(落葉松) 간벌목(間伐木)을 원료(原料)로 한 Oriented Strand Board(OSB)의 목표밀도(目標密度)와 Strand Size가 OSB의 재질(材質)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effects of Target Density and Strand Size on Properties of Oriented Strand Board Composed of Thinned Wood of Larix leptolepis Gordon)

  • This study was to manufacture thinned wood of Larix leptolepis Gordon into Oriented Strand Board(OSB) with Urea-Formaldehyde Resin. The OSB was made of four kinds of strand in slenderness ratio 150 ; thickness $0.3{\pm}0.05mm$, $0.4{\pm}0.05mm$, $0.5{\pm}0.05mm$ and $0.6{\pm}0.05mm$, respectively length 45mm, 60mm, 75mm and 90mm. Target densities were 0.65gr/$cm^3$, 0.75gr/$cm^3$ and 0.85gr/$cm^3$. The stepwise 9 minutes-multi-pressing schedule in the maximum pressure 40kgf/$cm^2$, the minimum pressure 10kgf/$cm^2$ was applied for $400mm{\times}390mm{\times}12mm$ board at the temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ in a hot press. In MOR The OSB of thin strand thickness $0.3{\pm}0.05mm$(length 45mm) and density 0.85gr/$cm^3$ was the highest. The strand thickness had more effect on MOR than the strand length. In strand thickness $0.4{\pm}0.05mm$(length 60mm) and density 0.85gr/$cm^3$ was the highest MOE. The strand thickness and length had adverse effects on MOE each other. At internal bonding. The OSB of strand thickness $0.3{\pm}0.05mm$(length 45mm) and board density 0.75gr/$cm^3$ showed the highest value. OSB had higher IB value with thinner strand thickness. The thinner strand thickness showed the lower thickness swelling in turn $0.3{\pm}0.05mm$(length 45mm), $0.4{\pm}0.05mm$(length 60mm), $0.5{\pm}0.05mm$(length 75mm). $0.6{\pm}0.05mm$(length 90mm). Target densities 0.75gr/$cm^3$ 0.65gr/$cm^3$, 0.85gr/$cm^3$ showed in turn lower value. Finally, The OSB made of thinned wood of Larix leptolepis Gordon showed good results in laboratory experiment.

KSTAR 용 소선-소선 접합부의 직류저항 계산 (Calculation of DC resistance of strand-to-strand joints for KSTAR)

  • Since the strand-to-strand type joint far CICC (Cable-In-Conduit Conductor) is small in size and has low DC resistance, it is expected to be useful type fur a superconducting magnet system which had a compact structure like the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) coil system. The DC resistance is changed according to the distribution patterns of strands in cables connected together in the joint. A commercial code was used for the calculation of the DC resistance. With the decrease of outer diameter of the Joint, Which means the increase of strand volume fraction in the joint, the calculated DC resistance decrease rapidly and non-lineally. The variation of resistance depends mainly on the volume fraction of solder which has higher resistivity than copper. The resistance decrease inversely with the increase of the length of the joint. The resistance increase with increase of number of triplets in each stack contacted with that of another terminal cable. In case of the strand-to-strand joint that has 62mm of outer diameter, 52mm of inner diameter, 100mm of overlap length, and four triplets in each stack, the calculated DC resistance is less than 1 n-Ohm.

  • An experimental study was carried out to estimate development lengths of the prestressing strand in pretensioned beams. Recent studies had indicated that current desing provision were inadequate. Objective of this investigation is to determine the effect of strand diameter and concrete cover in pretensioned beams. Strand of the 1.52cm diameter is more useful and economic than that of the 12.7mm diameter, but current provision does not include 15.2mm diameter strand in experimental data. Because the property of strand has been developed, current provision need to be improved. Based on the experimental data, it was determined that bond failure would be prevented if no cracking occured in transfer zone of a pretensioned strand.

  • Rapid prototyping (RP) technologies are mainly performed by layered manufacturing (LM) process which manufactures 3D physical objects by depositing 2D sections in a direction. Thus, deformations are apt to occur in overhanging area of the RP processed part. Also, excessive adhesion between part and platform of the RP apparatus is generated. In order to prevent these problems, most of the RP technologies adopt support structure. Main element to support a part in the support structure is strand. In actual field, however, the number of strand is determined by the software operating reference guide or RP system operator's experience. In this paper, a methodology to determine the optimal strand spacing is presented through experiments and measurements for the SL part deformation by change of strand spacing and part weight in the support structure of the stereolithography.

Sensitization Effects of Hyperthermia on Bleomycininduced DNA Strand Breaks and Replication Inhibition in CHO-$K_1$ Cells in Vitro

  • Effects of hyperthermia on the induction of DNA single strand breaks and replication inhibition were studied in bleomycin-treated CHO-K$_1$ cells by alkaline elution and alkaline sucrose gradient sedimentation. Bleomycin-induced DNA single strand breaks of DNA were dose-and time-dependently increased, and these strand breaks of DNA were gradually rejoined as post-incubation time passed. Treatment with hyperthermia alone did not affect the induction of DNA single strand breaks. However, pre-exposure of cells to hyperthermia followed by bleomycin treatment greatly increased the single strand breaks, and also reduced the rejoining processes of bleomycin-induced DNA single strand breaks. Bleomycin selectively inhibited the replicon initiation. The combined treatment with hyperthermia and bleomycin markedly potentiated the nonspecific inhibition of replication.

  • In this paper, we characterize the mechanical properties of PCL strand which is made by oscillating nozzle for tissue engineering scaffold. In order to increase the mechanical properties of the PCL strand, we designed an oscillating nozzle system for the 3D plotting system. First, we check the effect of the nozzle speed (3 to 8 mm/sec), frequency (0 or 300 Hz) and the oscillating amplitude (0 or 100 V) on the diameter of the PCL strand. Second, we observe the effect of the frequency (0, 100, 200 and 300 Hz) and the oscillating amplitude (0, 50 and 100 V) on the mechanical property of PCL strand. The mechanical properties and surface morphology of PCL strand made by oscillating nozzle are compared with the PCL strand made by normal nozzle using Nano-UTM and SEM.

  • MicroRNA는 RNA로 전사된 유전자와의 상보결합을 통해 유전자 발현을 억제하는 조절인자이다. MicroRNA 생성과정에서 pre-microRNA의 3' 또는 5' 부근의 strand가 선택되어 mature 시퀀스가 되고 유전자 조절에 직접 작용하게 된다. 하지만 어떤 특징을 가진 strand가 선택 되는지에 대한 정확한 메커니즘은 아직 연구되어 있지 않다. 본 논문에서는 microRNA 시퀀스 정보를 바탕으로 하이퍼망을 구성하여 strand 선택 예측 모델을 구축하였다. 실험 결과 하이퍼망 학습을 통해 microRNA strand 선택에 중요한 영향을 미치는 시퀀스 특징을 찾을 수 있었고, strand 선택을 높은 정확도로 예측할 수 있음을 확인하였다.
