A growing need has developed in the United States to obtain more specific knowledge on the structural integrity of infrastructure due to aging service lives, heavier and more frequent loading conditions, and durability issues. This need has spurred extensive research in the area of structural health monitoring over the past few decades. Several structural health monitoring techniques have been developed that are capable of locating damage in structures using modal strain energy of mode shapes. Typically in the past, bending strain energy has been used in these methods since it is a dominant vibrational mode in many structures and is easily measured. Additionally, there may be cases, such as pipes, shafts, or certain bridges, where structures exhibit significant torsional behavior as well. In this research, torsional strain energy is used to locate damage. The damage index method is used on two numerical models; a cantilevered steel pipe and a simply-supported steel plate girder bridge. Torsion damage indices are compared to bending damage indices to assess their effectiveness at locating damage. The torsion strain energy method is capable of accurately locating damage and providing additional valuable information to both of the structures' behaviors.

Applying a general coupled lateral and torsional vibration finite element model of gear pair element, this paper intends to look into in detail the coupled lateral and torsional vibration characteristics of a turbo-chiller rotor bearing system, having a bull-pinion speed increasing gear. Investigations have been carried out systematically by comparing the uncoupled and coupled natural frequencies and their mode shapes upon varying the gear mesh stiffness with considerations on rotating speeds, and also by comparing the strain energies of lateral and torsional vibration modes. Results hale shown that some modes may hale the coupled lateral and torsional mode characteristics as the gear mesh stiffness Increases over a certain value, and moreover that their associated dominant modes may be different from their initial modes, j.e., a certain dominant mode may change from an initial torsional one to a lateral one or from an initial lateral one to a torsional one.
This paper presents the non-destructive evaluation of a high-speed railway bridge using train-induced strain responses. Based on the train-track-bridge interaction analysis, the strain responses of a high-speed railway bridge under moving trains with different operation status could be calculated. The train induced strain responses could be divided into two parts: the force vibration stage and the free vibration stage. The strain-displacement relationship is analysed and used for deriving critical displacements from theoretical stain measurements at a forced vibration stage. The derived displacements would be suitable for the condition assessment of the bridge through design specifications defined indexes and would show certain limits to the practical application. Thus, the damage identification of high-speed railways, such as the stiffness degradation location, needs to be done by comparing the measured strain response under moving trains in different states because the vehicle types of high-speed railway are relatively clear and definite. The monitored strain responses at the free vibration stage, after trains pass through the bridge, would be used for identifying the strain modes. The relationship between and the degradation degree and the strain mode shapes shows certain rules for the widely used simply supported beam bridges. The numerical simulation proves simple and effective for the proposed method to locate and quantify the stiffness degradation.
Modal analysis of cracked cantilever composite beams, made of graphite-fibre reinforced polyamide, is studied. By using the finite element and component mode synthesis methods, a numeric model applicable to investigate the vibration of cracked composite beams is developed. In this new approach, from the crack section, the composite beam separated into two parts coupled by a flexibility matrix taking into account the interaction forces. These forces are derived from the fracture mechanics theory as the inverse of the compliance matrix calculated with the proper stress intensity factors and strain energy release rate expressions. Numerical results are obtained for modal analysis of composite beams with a transverse non-propagating open crack, addressing the effects of the location and depth of the crack, and the volume fraction and orientation of the fibre on the natural frequencies and mode shapes. By means of modal data, the position and dimension of the defect can be found. The results of the study confirmed that presented method is suitable for the vibration analysis of cracked cantilever composite beams. Present technique can be easily extended to composite plates and shells.

In the present study, the axial vibration of the nanorods is investigated in the framework of the doublet mechanics theory. The equations of motion and boundary conditions of nanorods are derived by applying the Hamilton principle. A finite element method is developed to obtain the vibration frequencies of nanorods for different boundary conditions. A two-noded higher order rod finite element is used to solve the vibration problem. The natural frequencies of nanorods obtained with the present finite element analysis are validated by comparing the results of classical doublet mechanics and nonlocal strain gradient theories. The effects of rod length, mode number and boundary conditions on the axial vibration frequencies of nanorods are examined in detail. Mode shapes of the nanorods are presented for the different boundary conditions. It is shown that the doublet mechanics model can be used for the dynamic analysis of nanotubes, and the presented finite element formulation can be used for mechanical problems of rods with unavailable analytical solutions. These new results can also be used as references for the future studies.

Damage detection methods using vibration modes are investigated on ring structures and. modal behavior of the slightly asymmetric rings is examined. Mode shapes changes, MSER(modal strain energy ratio) and MCR(modal curvature ratio) are applied to identify the locations of faults or damages. Parameters are calculated and compared by finite element analysis on rings with designed local damages. Damages are modeled as reduced stiffness in the analysis. The results show MSER and MCR can be proper factors to detect local damages in ring structures.

The dynamic characteristics of a passenger radial tire were studied by the analytical method and the experiments. The purpose of this study is to obtain the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of a 2 ply steel belt radial tire fixed on the wheel in order to give datum of the dynamic design of tire. The governing equations are derived with the energy method. The composite toroidal finite elements with three degrees of freedom at each node are defined by specifying geometry, internal displacement functions, strain displacement and stress displacement relationships. In order to verify the capability of the present analysis, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the passenger radial tire are obtained experimentally by using the multi-channel F.F.T. analyser and compared the numerically obtained values. The results show that the analytically obtained values are in good agreement with the experiment and in addition they are in line with the Pott's experimental results.

There has been considerable interest over the last twenty years in the subject of the elastic properties of the cord-rubber laminate. This has been due to the rather intensive study of the composites materials characteristics brought about by the increased use of rigid composites materials characteristics brought about by the increased use of rigid composites in many structural applications. The object of this study is to obtain the natural frequencies and modes of the simply supported cord-rubber laminate plates prior to the study on the analysis of the dynamic properties of the pneumatic tire. To obtain these natural frequencies and modes, the 12 degrees of freedom orthotropic rectangular plate finite elements are developed. By using classical lamination theory, the stress-strain relations are represented. The governing equation for the finite element is derived by energy method. To find the natural frequencies and modes, he eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors are computed by the well known Jacobi power method. In order to verify the capability of this present finite element, the results of the specially orthotropic plate and the angle-ply laminate plate are compared with the analytical solution. The analytical and numberical results are in good agreement. The following problems of the simply supported plate are analyzed by the present finite element. a) the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the cord-rubber laminate plate for various aspect ratio. b) The natural frequencies and mode shapes of the orthotropic plate with the rectangular hole in its center.
A frequency domain response analysis is presented for building frames passively controlled by viscoelastic dampers, under harmonic ground excitation. Three different models are used to represent the linear dynamic force-deformation characteristics of viscoelastic dampers namely, Kelvin model, Linear hysteretic model and Maxwell model. The frequency domain solution is obtained by (i) an iterative pseudo-force method, which uses undamped mode shapes and frequencies of the system, (ii) an approximate modal strain energy method, which uses an equivalent modal damping of the system in each mode of vibration, and (iii) an exact method which uses complex frequency response function of the system. The responses obtained by three different methods are compared for different combinations of viscoelastic dampers giving rise to both classically and non-classically damped cases. In addition, the effect of the modelling of viscoelastic dampers on the response is investigated for a certain frequency range of interest. The results of the study are useful in appropriate modelling of viscoelastic dampers and in understanding the implication of using modal analysis procedure for building frames which are passively controlled by viscoelastic dampers against base excitation.
