The settlements of footings in send are often estimated based on the results of in-situ tests, particularly the standard penetration test (SPT) and the cone penetration test (CPT). In this paper, we analyze the load-settlement response of vertically loaded footings placed in sands using both the finite element method with a non-linear stress-strain model and the conventional elastic approach. Calculations are made for both normally consolidated and heavily overconsolidated sands with various relative densities. For each case, the cone penetration resistance qc is calculated using CONPOINT, a widely tested program that allows computation of qc based on cavity expansion analysis. Based on these analyses, we propose a procedure for the estimation of footing settlement in sands based on CPT results.
It is more appropriate to treat that the semi-solid mixture as a single phase material that obeys incompressibility in the global sense and to analyze the liquid flow only locally than the approach based on compressible yield criteria. In the present study, a numerical algorithm of updating the solid volume fraction based on mixture theory has been developed. Finite element analysis of simple upsetting was carried out using the proposed algorithm to investigate the degree of macro-segregation according to friction conditions and compressive strain rates under the isothermal condition. The simulation results were compared to experimental results available in reference to test the validity of the currently proposed algorithm. Since the comparison results show a good agreement it is construed that the proposed algorithm can contribute to the development of numerical analysis of determining the solid volume fraction semi-solid processing.

A strut-and-tie based method intended for determining the load-carrying capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) corbels is presented in this paper. In addition to the normal strut-and-tie force equilibrium requirements, the proposed model is based on secant stiffness formulation, incorporating strain compatibility and constitutive laws of cracked RC. The proposed method evaluates the load-carrying capacity as limited by the failure modes associated with nodal crushing, yielding of the longitudinal principal reinforcement, as well as crushing or splitting of the diagonal strut. Load-carrying capacity predictions obtained from the proposed analysis method are in a better agreement with corbel test results of a comprehensive database, comprising 455 test results, compiled from the available literature, than other existing models for corbels. This method is illustrated to provide more accurate estimates of behaviour and capacity than the shear-friction based approach implemented by the ACI 318-11, the strut-and-tie provisions in different codes (American, Australian, Canadian, Eurocode and New Zealand).
This paper presents an innovative stress-function variational approach in formulating the interfacial shear and normal stresses in an externally bonded concrete joint using carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) plies. The joint is subjected to surface traction loadings applied at both ends of the concrete substrate layer. By introducing two interfacial shear and normal stress functions on the CFRP-concrete interface, based on Euler-Bernoulli beam idea and static stress equations of equilibrium, the entire stress fields of the joint were determined. The complementary strain energy was minimized in order to solve the governing equation of the joint. This yields an ordinary differential equation from which the interfacial normal and shear stresses were proposed explicitly, satisfying all the multiple traction boundary conditions. Lamination theory for composite materials was also employed to obtain the interfacial stresses. The proposed approach was validated by the analytic models in the literature as well as through a comprehensive computational code generated by the authors. Furthermore, a numerical verification was carried out via the finite element software ABAQUS. In the end, a scaling analysis was conducted to analyze the interfacial stress field dependence of the joint upon effective issues using the devised code.

The rotating components such as turbine rotors in service are generally subjected to multiaxial cyclic loading conditions. The prediction of fatigue lift for turbine rotor components under complex multiaxial loading conditions is very important to prevent the fatigue failures in service. In this paper, axial and torsional low cycle fatigue tests were preformed for 3.5NiCrMo steels serviced low pressure turbine rotor of nuclear power plant. Several methods to predict biaxial fatigue life such as Tresca, von Mises and Brown & Miller's critical plane approach were evaluated to correlate the experimental results for serviced NiCrMoV steel. The fracture mode and fatigue characteristics of NiCrMoV steel were discussed based on the results of fatigue tests performed under the axial and torsional test conditions. In particular, the Brown and Miller's critical plane approach was found to best correlate the experimental data with predictions being within a factor of 2.

Crack opening governs many transfer properties that play a pivotal role in durability analyses. Instead of trying to combine continuum and discrete models in computational analyses, it would be attractive to derive from the continuum approach an estimate of crack opening, without considering the explicit description of a discontinuous displacement field in the computational model. This is the prime objective of this contribution. The derivation is based on the comparison between two continuous variables: the distribution if the effective non local strain that controls damage and an analytical distribution of the effective non local variable that derives from a strong discontinuity analysis. Close to complete failure, these distributions should be very close to each other. Their comparison provides two quantities: the displacement jump across the crack [U] and the distance between the two profiles. This distance is an error indicator defining how close the damage distribution is from that corresponding to a crack surrounded by a fracture process zone. It may subsequently serve in continuous/discrete models in order to define the threshold below which the continuum approach is close enough to the discrete one in order to switch descriptions. The estimation of the crack opening is illustrated on a one-dimensional example and the error between the profiles issued from discontinuous and FE analyses is found to be of a few percents close to complete failure.
The effect of element interaction and material nonlinearity on the ultimate capacity of stainless steel plated cross-sections is investigated in this paper. The focus of the research lies in cross-sections failing by local buckling; member instabilities, distortional buckling and interactions thereof with local buckling are not considered. The cross-sections investigated include rectangular hollow sections (RHS), I sections and parallel flange channels (PFC). Based on previous finite element investigations of structural stainless steel stub columns, parametric studies were conducted and the ultimate capacity of the aforementioned cross-sections with a range of element slendernesses and aspect ratios has been obtained. Various design methods, including the effective width approach, the direct strength method (DSM), the continuous strength method (CSM) and a design method based on regression analysis, which accounts for element interaction, were assessed on the basis of the numerical results, and the relative merits and weaknesses of each design approach have been highlighted. Element interaction has been shown to be significant for slender cross-sections, whilst the behaviour of stocky cross-sections is more strongly influenced by the material strain-hardening characteristics. A modification to the continuous strength method has been proposed to allow for the effect of element interaction, which leads to more reliable ultimate capacity predictions. Comparisons with available test data have also been made to demonstrate the enhanced accuracy of the proposed method and its suitability for the treatment of local buckling in stainless steel cross-sections.
This paper presents a new approach to predict the racking load-displacement response of plasterboard clad walls found in Australian light-framed residential structures under monotonic racking load. The method is based on a closed-form mathematical model, described herein as the 'Modularised' Closed-Form Mathematical model or MCFM model. The model considers the non-linear behaviour of the connections between the plasterboard cladding and frame. Furthermore, the model is flexible as it enables incorporation of different nailing patterns for the cladding. Another feature of this model is that the shape of stud deformation is not assumed to be a specific function, but it is computed based on the strain energy approach to take account of the actual load deformation characteristics of particular walls. Verification of the model against the results obtained from a detailed Finite Element (FE) model is also reported. Very good agreement between the closed form solution and that of the FE model was achieved.

This paper is dedicated to nonlinear static and free vibration analysis of Uniform Distributed Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composite (UD-CNTRC) structures under in-plane loading. The authors have suggested an efficient six-node triangular element. Mixed Interpolation of Tensorial Components (MITC) approach is employed to alleviate the membrane locking phenomena. Moreover, the behavior of the well-known LST element is considerably improved by applying an additional linear interpolation on the strain fields. Based on the rule of mixture, the properties of CNTRC are obtained. In this study, only the uniform distributed CNTs are employed through the thickness direction of element. To achieve the natural frequencies and shape modes, the eigenvalue problem is also solved. Using Total Lagrangian Principles, large amplitude free vibration is considered based on the first normalized mode shape of structure. Different well-known plane problem benchmarks and some proposed ones are studied to validate the accuracy and capability of authors' formulations. In addition, the effects of length to the height ratio of beam, CNT's characteristics, support conditions and normalized amplitude parameter on the linear and nonlinear vibration parameters are investigated.

The focus of the present study is to investigate both local and global behaviour of a precast concrete sandwich panel. The selected prototype consists of two reinforced concrete layers coupled by a system of cold-drawn steel profiles and one intermediate layer of insulating material. High-definition nonlinear finite element (FE) models, based on 3D brick and 2D interface elements, are used to assess the capacity of this technology under shear, tension and compression. Geometrical nonlinearities are accounted via large displacement-large strain formulation, whilst material nonlinearities are included, in the series of simulations, by means of Von Mises yielding criterion for steel elements and a classical total strain crack model for concrete; a bond-slip constitutive law is additionally adopted to reproduce steel profile-concrete layer interaction. First, constitutive models are calibrated on the basis of preliminary pull and pull-out tests for steel and concrete, respectively. Geometrically and materially nonlinear FE simulations are performed, in compliance with experimental tests, to validate the proposed modeling approach and characterize shear, compressive and tensile response of this system, in terms of global capacity curves and local stress/strain distributions. Based on these experimental and numerical data, the structural performance is then quantified under various loading conditions, aimed to reproduce the behaviour of this solution during production, transport, construction and service conditions.
