  • In this study, a new stopping criterion, called "backward controlled stopping criterion" (BCSC), was proposed to be used in Genetic Algorithms. In the study, the available stopping citeria; adaptive stopping citerion, evolution time, fitness threshold, fitness convergence, population convergence, gene convergence, and developed stopping criterion were applied to the following four comparison problems; high strength concrete mix design, pre-stressed precast concrete beam, travelling salesman and reinforced concrete deep beam problems. When completed the analysis, the developed stopping criterion was found to be more accomplished than available criteria, and was able to research a much larger area in the space design supplying higher fitness values.

  • In this paper, some of the issue about a group sequential method are considered in the Bayesian context. The continuous time optimal stopping boundary can be used to approximate the optimal stopping boundary for group sequential designs. The exact stopping boundary for group sequential design is obtained by using the backward induction method and is compared with the continuous optimal stopping boundary and the corrected continuous stopping boundary.

  • The importance of the reliability of software is growing more and more as more complicated digital computer systems are used for real-time control applications. To provide more reliable software, the testing period should be long enough, but not unnecessarily too long. In this study, we suggest a simple but effective stopping rule which can provide just proper amount of testing time. We take unique features of software into consideration and adopt non-homogeneous Poisson process model and Bayesian approach. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the validity of our stopping rule.

  • Many applications involving induction motors that are controlled using variable frequency drives require the ability to stop quickly. These applications include emergency stops, quick stopping of fans, centrifuges, presses, etc. The technique that is widely accepted in the industry for achieving quick stopping makes use of brake resistors in series with a power semiconductor switch. The switch-resistor combination (brake-unit) is applied across the dc bus. The fastest decelerating time achievable depends on the size of the resistors and the switch employed. In this paper, the authors propose a novel method of achieving quick stopping times without the use of any brake-unit. Experimental test results with and without this method on a large inertia motor-load combination show that the proposed stopping method is able to reduce the stopping time significantly compared to normal decelerated stop without the need for a braking unit.

  • This paper is concerned with forecasting the existing number of errors in the computer software and optimizing the stopping time of the software test based upon the forecasted number of errors. The most commonly used models have assessed software reliability under the assumption that the software failure late is proportional to the current fault content of the software but invariant to time since software faults are independents of others and equally likely to cause a failure during testing. In practice, it has been observed that in many situations, the failure rate decrease. Hence, this paper proposes a mathematical model to describe testing situations where the failure rate of software limearly decreases proportional to testing time. The least square method is used to estimate parameters of the mathematical model. A cost model to optimize the software testing time is also proposed. In this cost mode two cost factors are considered. The first cost is to test execution cost directly proportional to test time and the second cost is the failure cost incurred after delivery of the software to user. The failure cost is assumed to be proportional to the number of errors remained in the software at the test stopping time. The optimal stopping time is determined to minimize the total cost, which is the sum of test execution cast and the failure cost. A numerical example is solved to illustrate the proposed procedure.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sealing properties of endodontic cavity filling materials according to the time intervals after filling. Access cavities were prepared in extracted human premolar or molar teeth and filled with caviton, zinc oxide eugenol cement, zinc oxide eugenol cement with a base of gutta percha stopping and gutta percha stopping. After filling at the intervals of immediate, 2 days and 2 weeks the teeth were immersed for 2 weeks in 1% methylene blue solutions. Longitudinal sections were obtained from approximately center of teeth and the depth of dye penetration into the access cavities were observed by 10${\times}$macrolens. The following results were obtained. I. All the materials experimented showed varying depth of dye penetration. 2. Of the material tested, caviton showed the best marginal sealing qualities regardless of the time intervals after filling and the sealing properties of the gutta percha stopping was the worst. 3. Both in zinc oxide eugenol cement and zinc oxide eugenol cement with a base of gutta percha stopping, the fillings allowed to mature for 2 days in normal saline solution showed the best sealing properties and those with no maturing time revealed the worst sealing qualities. 4. The sealing qualities of zinc oxide eugenol cement with a base of gutta percha stopping revealed slightly lower depth of dye penetration than that of zinc oxide eugenol cements.
