  • This article describes the development on a new style active hybrid bearing system including both merits of an aerostatic bearing system and a magnetic bearing system. The developed active hybrid bearing system has several advantages: exact rotation, robust controller against the variation of a disturbance, improvement of stiffness and a damper of the system at a high-speed operation, and constraints of the heat generated by a bias current. In order to measure a rotating error due to the change of a cutting force and the variation of a system parameter, a CCS (Cylindrical Capacity displacement Sensor) was used.

  • Korean trains pass many mountain areas, so the volume of structures like bridge and tunnel has large part of railway lines. Train speed-up naturally needs a straight line in railway, then structures are increasing, and this influences passenger's comfort and the safety of operation, and it needs more track maintenance. The stiffness of bridge and tunnel is higher than the soil in the roadbed in spite of dynamic difference in vibration and displacement. Differences in stiffness have more dynamic effects and increase the deformation and destruction in the track and roadbed. This study will measure periodically to structure's approaches which have very fast track irregularity and analyze dynamic differences and track irregularity near structure's approaches, so realize the cause of track irregularity of structure's approaches and use basic data for reasonably strengthening method of structure's approaches.

  • Aortic AIx(augmentation index) has been used to measure aortic stiffness and evaluate ventricular load quantitatively. Algorithm for the detection of augmentation point gradually increases the differential order to detect inflection point rather than detects the distinctive point that appears after a specific time. Developed algorithm for AIx is proved to provide more accurate results than the ones developed by previous studies with the deviation from $-11.5{\pm}14.34$ points to $-3.75{\pm}1.26$ points. Results could provide the basis for the measurement of aortic stiffness using easily-measurable radial artery pulse waves, and could be extended to develop a system for early diagnosis of various vascular diseases.

Buckling analysis of piles in weak single-layered soil with consideration of geometric nonlinearities

  • This paper presents a numerical model for buckling analysis of slender piles, such as micropiles. The model incorporates geometric nonlinearities to provide enhanced accuracy and a more comprehensive representation of pile buckling behavior. Specifically, the pile is represented using geometrically nonlinear beams with the von Karman deformation measure. The lateral support provided by the surrounding soil is modeled using the spring approach, with the spring stiffness determined according to the undrained shear strength of the soil. The numerical model is tested across a wide range of pile slenderness ratios and undrained shear strengths of the surrounding soil. The numerical results are validated against analytical solutions. Furthermore, the influence of various pile bottom end boundary conditions on the critical buckling force is investigated. The implications of the obtained results are thoroughly discussed.

Soil resistance estimation using smart instrumented dynamic penetrometers

  • In-situ penetration tests using dynamic penetrometers are widely used for estimating soil resistance. Additionally, these dynamic penetrometers have been instrumented to improve tests accuracy. This paper introduces smart instrumented dynamic penetrometers and discusses experimental studies for various cases. An energy monitoring module was developed to enhance the dynamic penetration tests. The standard penetration test (SPT) and instrumented dynamic cone penetrometer (IDCP) tests were conducted using the energy monitoring module. Dynamic responses obtained by the energy monitoring module were used to calculate the transferred energies into the rod head and tip to correct the evaluation of ground strength. In addition, a crosshole-type dynamic penetrometer (CDP) was developed to measure the penetration index and shear wave velocity simultaneously to estimate the strength and stiffness of ground. The results of this study indicate that smart instrumented dynamic penetrometers may be effectively used to characterize the strength and stiffness of ground.

  • This paper investigates the radial performance of self-acting spiral-grooved air bearing, used to support small high-speed rotating bodies. Repeatable runout, nonrepeatable runout, stiffness and supporting load are selected as the performance. The clearance between rotor and stator, the stator groove depth, and the rotating speed are chosen as three main parameters affecting the performances. Force application and displacement measurement are done in a noncontact manner, in order not to disturb operation: electromagnetic force is applied to the rotor and gap sensors are used to measure the displacement of the rotor. Experimental results show that repeatable runout decreases as speed, groove depth and clearance decrease. Nonrepeatable runout decreases as clearance decreases, and it has a minimum value at $5.5{\mu}m$ of grove depth and a maximum value at speed of 18.000rpm. Stiffness increases as speed increases and clearance decreases, and has a maximum value around $5.5{\mu}m$ of groove depth. The relationship between force and displacement is linear for small displacement, but becomes nonlinear for large displacement. Supporting load is linearly proportional to the stiffness, and it is a maximum value around $4.75{\mu}m$ of clearance.

A correlation method for high-frequency response of a cargo during dry transport in high seas

  • Cargo, such as a Tension Leg Platform (TLP), Semi-submersible platform (Semi), Spar or a circular Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO), are frequently dry-transported on a Heavy Lift Vessel (HLV) from the point of construction to the point of installation. The voyage can span months and the overhanging portions of the hull can be subject to frequent wave slamming events in rough weather. Tie-downs or sea-fastening are usually provided to ensure the safety of the cargo during the voyage and to keep the extreme responses of the cargo, primarily for the installed equipment and facilities, within the design limits. The proper design of the tie-down is dependent on the accurate prediction of the wave slamming loads the cargo will experience during the voyage. This is a difficult task and model testing is a widely accepted and adopted method to obtain reliable sea-fastening loads and extreme accelerations. However, it is crucial to realize the difference in the inherent stiffness of the instrument that is used to measure the tri-axial sea fastening loads and the prototype design of the tie-downs. It is practically not possible to scale the tri-axial load measuring instrument stiffness to reflect the real tie-down stiffness during tests. A correlation method is required to systematically and consistently account for the stiffness differences and correct the measured results. Direct application of the measured load tends to be conservative and lead to over-design that can reflect on the overall cost and schedule of the project. The objective here is to employ the established correlation method to provide proper high-frequency responses to topsides and hull design teams. In addition, guidance for optimizing tie-down design to avoid damage to the installed equipment, facilities and structural members can be provided.

진동주파수 해석을 통한 지반강성 평가방법 (Soil Stiffness Evaluation using Vibration Frequency)

  • 본 연구에서는 지반 반발력을 측정하는 상용 컴팩토미터와 일반가속도계에서 얻은 진동가속도를 분석하여 도출한 다양한 다짐도 평가 값 (CMV-A, CCV1, CCV2, PWRI)들을 비교 분석하였다. 본 모형시험지반의 자연함수비는 최적함수비 보다 약 20%가량 커 기존 다짐도 평가방법인 들밀도시험으로 구한 건 조단위중량이 다짐횟수의 증가에 상관없이 일정하게 나타나 잘 다져지지 않는 것으로 나타났으며, 지오게이지와 동평판재하시험으로 구한 강성계수 $E_G$, $E_{LFWD}$ 도 동일한 경향을 나타냈다. 진동가속도에 대한 주파수 분석으로 구한 다양한 다짐도 평가 값과 컴팩토미터에서 얻은 CMV-C 값 모두 들밀도시험, 지오게이지, 동평판재하시험 그리고 동적콘관입시험 결과와 동일하게 다짐횟수 증가에 크게 상관없는 것으로 나타났다. 추후 다양한 지반조건에 대한 시험 결과를 축적, 분석하여 기존 다짐도 평가방법과의 정량적 상관관계 규명이 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

Bending characteristics of Prestressed High Strength Concrete (PHC) spun pile measured using distributed optical fibre strain sensor

  • Pre-stressed concrete circular spun piles are widely used in various infrastructure projects around the world and offer an economical deep foundation system with consistent and superior quality compared to cast in-situ and other concrete piles. Conventional methods for measuring the lateral response of piles have been limited to conventional instrumentation, such as electrical based gauges and pressure transducers. The problem with existing technology is that the sensors are not able to assist in recording the lateral stiffness changes of the pile which varies along the length depending on the distribution of the flexural moments and appearance of tensile cracks. This paper describes a full-scale bending test of a 1-m diameter spun pile of 30 m long and instrumented using advanced fibre optic distributed sensor, known as Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA). Optical fibre sensors were embedded inside the concrete during the manufacturing stage and attached on the concrete surface in order to measure the pile's full-length flexural behaviour under the prescribed serviceability and ultimate limit state. The relationship between moments-deflections and bending moments-curvatures are examined with respect to the lateral forces. Tensile cracks were measured and compared with the peak strains observed from BOTDA data which corroborated very well. By analysing the moment-curvature response of the pile, the structure can be represented by two bending stiffness parameters, namely the pre-yield (EI) and post-yield (EIcr), where the cracks reduce the stiffness property by 89%. The pile deflection profile can be attained from optical fibre data through closed-form solutions, which generally matched with the displacements recorded by Linear Voltage Displacement Transducers (LVDTs).

보존적 물리치료가 퇴행성 슬관절염 환자의 균형 능력에 미치는 영향 (Effect on Balance Ability of Knee Osteoarthritis by modality)

  • Purpose : The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on Balance Ability of Knee Osteoarthritis(OA) by modality. Methods : The subjects were consisted of 30 women patients with knee OA. All subjects were randomly assigned to modality group. Each group had a treatment for 45 minutes per day and three times a week during 8 weeks period. Was used to measure recovery or worse of patient's condition, muscle assessment questionnaire(MAQ) was used to measure patient's muscular strength, Endurance, coordination/balance, KWOMAC was used to pain, stiffness, and physical function, and BPM was used to measure velocity, anterior-posterior. Results : This study results in following conclusions. 1. MAQ score was significantly decreased in modality group(p<.05). 2. KWOMAC score was significantly decreased in modality group(p<.05). 3. BPM were score was significantly decreased in modality group(p<.05). Conclusions : From this result the modality treatment retrogression characteristic will be effective in treatment of patient.
