  • In order to enhance multi-channel audio signals, Dolby Pro Logic is widely used especially for the Hi-Fi audio system, since it can provide highly stereophonic effects and a nice separation of multi-channel sound. This paper describes an implementation of Dolby Pro Logic decoder with ARM-7 core. The code is modified for the fixed point operation and optimized. For the verification of the code, the operation time and the precision are estimated thoroughly. As a result, it is verified that Dolby Pro Logic decoder can be implemented with ARM-7 core operating at 54 MHz.

  • In the AV system, stereophonic system has been studied to produce a realistic sound effect. The width of stereo AV system speakers is narrow, to have the spatial impression of sound effect, widening the sound image is necessary. The direction of sound image depends on the phase delay and the sound pressure level difference between two channels. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between the phase delay and the direction of the sound image relating to the frequency of sound source. Also we experimented to directionally localize the sound image of the pure tone with shifting phases and controling sound pressure love between two channels when the sound is reproduced by two speakers to make a spatial impression of sound effect.

  • This paper describes techniques used to analyze the sweet spot of sound field reproduced by ear-level linear arrays of loudspeakers by geometrical approach method. Previous researches have introduced various sweet spot definitions in their own way. In general, sweet spot is defined as an area whose stereophonic sound effect is valid. Its size is affected by the geometrical arrangement of the system. In this paper, a case when plane waves are generated by linear arrays of loudspeakers in the horizontal plane is considered. So the sweet spot is defined as an area in which the listener can perceive the desired azimuth angle. Because there are many loudspeakers, impulse responses at listener's ears are in the form of pulse-train and the time-duration of the pulse-train affects the localization performance of the listener. So we calculated the maximum time duration of pulse-train by geometrical approach method and identified with the results of impulse response simulation. This paper also includes parameter analysis with respect to aperture size, so it suggests a tool for sound engineers to expect the sweet spot size and listener's sound perception.

  • There are two methods in 3-D sound reproduction: a surround system, like 3.1 channel method and a binaural system using 2-channel method. The binaural system utilizes the sound localization principle of a human using two ears. Generally, a crosstalk between each channel of 2-channel loudspeaker system should be canceled to produce a natural 3-D sound. To solve this problem, it is necessary to trace a head movement. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to correctly trace the head movement of a listener. The Proposed algorithm is based on the detection of face and eye. The face detection uses the intensity of an image and the position of eyes is detected by a mathematical morphology. When the head of the listener moves, length of borderline between face area and eyes may change. We use this information to the tracking of head movement. A computer simulation results show That head movement is effectively estimated within +10 margin of error using the proposed algorithm.

  • Driving aircraft requires extremely complicated and detailed information processing. Pilots perform their tasks by selecting the information relevant to them. In this processing, spatial information presented simultaneously through crossmodal link is advantageous over the one provided in singular sensory mode. In this paper, probability to apply providing visual spatial information along with auditory information to enemy tracking system in aircraft navigation is empirically investigated. The result shows that auditory spatial information, which is virtually created through HRTF is advantageous to visual spatial information alone in attention processing. The findings suggest auditory spatial information along with visual one can be presented through crossmodal link by utilizing stereophonic sound such as HRTF. which is available in the existing simple stereo system.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of the simplification for high frequency region in Head-Related Transfer Function(HRTF) on the sound localization. For this purpose, HRTF was measured and analyzed. The result in the HRTF frequency characteristic of the back sound source showed that the decrease revel of high frequency was smaller than that of low frequency region, which means the possibility of simplification in the high frequency region. Simplification was performed by flattening of the high frequency amplitude characteristics with the insertion of the low-pass filter, whose cutoff frequency is given by boundary frequency. Auditory experiments were performed to evaluate the simplified HRTF. The result showed that direction perception was not influenced by the simplification of the frequency characteristics of HRTF for the error of sound localization. The rate of confusion for the front and back was not affected by the simplification of the frequency characteristics over 8kHz of HRTF. Finally, we made it clear that the sound localization was not affected by the simplification of frequency characteristics of HRTF over 8kHz.
