Step Length Estimation on a Slope Using Accelerometers and a Barometer (가속도계와 기압계를 이용한 경사면에서의 보행 거리 추정)

  • Using a relationship between step length and accelerometer output, step length can be estimated. In this paper, we propose a new step length estimation algorithm, which can be used both for the plane and the slope by compensating the slope angle. The slope angle is estimated using a barometer and the slope angle is compensated by observing how the slope affects the step length estimation. The proposed algorithm is verified using five adult man walking data, where the average length error is about 3% regardless of the slope.

  • This paper presents a step length estimation algorithm for Pedestrian Dead Reckoning using linear calibrated ZUPT (zero velocity update) with a foot mounted IMU. The IMU consists of 3 axis accelerometer, gyro and magnetometer. Attitude of IMU is estimated using an inertial navigation algorithm. To increase accuracy of step length estimation algorithm, we propose a stance detection algorithm and an enhanced ZUPT. The enhanced ZUPT calculates firefighter's step length considering velocity error caused by sensor bias during one step. This algorithm also works efficiently at various motions, such as crawling, sideways and stair stepping. Through experiments, the step length estimation performance of the proposed algorithm is verified.

  • This paper proposes a method for PDR (Pedestrian Dead-Reckoning) using a low cost IMU. Generally, GPS has been widely used for localization of pedestrians. However, GPS is disabled in the indoor environment such as in buildings. To solve this problem, this research suggests the PDR scheme with an IMU attached to the pedestrian's waist. However, despite the fact many methods have been proposed to estimate the pedestrian's position, but their results are not sufficient. One of the most important factors to improve performance is, a new calibration method that has been proposed to obtain the reliable sensor data. In addition to this calibration, the PDR method is also proposed to detect steps, where estimation schemes of step length, attitude, and heading angles are developed. Peak and zero crossings are detected to count the steps from 3-axis acceleration values. For the estimation of step length, a nonlinear step model is adopted to take advantage of using one parameter. Complementary filter and zero angular velocity are utilized to estimate the attitude of the IMU module and to minimize the heading angle drift. To verify the effectiveness of this scheme, a real-time system is implemented and demonstrated. Experimental results show an accuracy of below 1% and below 3% in distance and position errors, respectively, which can be achievable using a high cost IMU.

Estimation of Substring Selectivity in Biological Sequence Database (생물학 서열 데이타베이스에서 부분 문자열의 선적도 추정)

  • Until now, substring selectivities have been estimated by two steps. First step is to build up a count-suffix tree, which has statistical information about substrings, and second step is to estimate substring selectivity using it. However, it's actually impossible to build up a count-suffix tree from biological sequences because their lengths are too long. So, this paper proposes a novel data structure, count q-gram tree, consisting of fixed length substrings. The Count q-gram tree retains the exact counts of all substrings whose lengths are equal to or less than q and this tree is generated in 0(N) time and in site not subject to total length of all sequences, N. This paper also presents an estimation technique, k-MO. k-MO can choose overlapping length of splitted substrings from a query string, and this choice will affect accuracy of selectivity and query processing time. Experiments show k-MO can estimate very accurately.

  • A method that is adaptively selecting among previous fast motion estimation algorithms and a newly proposed fast motion estimation algorithm(UCDS) is presented in this paper. The algorithm named AUDC and a newly proposed fast motion estimation algorithms are based on the Diamond Search(DS) algorithm and Three Step Search(TSS). Although many previous fast motion estimation algorithms have lots of advantages, those have lots of disadvantages. So we thought better adaptive selection of fast motion estimation algorithms than only using one fast motion estimation algorithm. Therefore, we propose AUDC that is using length of the MV, Search Point, SAD of the neighboring block and adaptively selecting among Cross Three Step Search(CTSS), Diamond Search(DS) and Ungraded Cross Diamond Search(UCDS). Experimental results show that the AUDC is much more robust, provides a faster searching speed, and smaller distortions than other popular fast block-matching at algorithms.

A Robust Staff Line Height and Staff Line Space Estimation for the Preprocessing of Music Score Recognition (악보인식 전처리를 위한 강건한 오선 두께와 간격 추정 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose a robust pre-processing module for camera-based Optical Music Score Recognition (OMR) on mobile device. The captured images likely suffer for recognition from many distortions such as illumination, blur, low resolution, etc. Especially, the complex background music sheets recognition are difficult. Through any symbol recognition system, the staff line height and staff line space are used many times and have a big impact on recognition module. A robust and accurate staff line height and staff line space are essential. Some staff line height and staff line space are proposed for binary image. But in case of complex background music sheet image, the binarization results from common binarization algorithm are not satisfactory. It can cause incorrect staff line height and staff line space estimation. We propose a robust staff line height and staff line space estimation by using run-length encoding technique on edge image. Proposed method is composed of two steps, first step, we conducted the staff line height and staff line space estimation based on edge image using by Sobel operator on image blocks. Each column of edge image is encoded by run-length encoding algorithm Second step, we detect the staff line using by Stable Path algorithm and removal the staff line using by adaptive Line Track Height algorithm which is to track the staff lines positions. The result has shown that robust and accurate estimation is possible even in complex background cases.

  • Blind identification and equalization of communication channel is important because it does not need training sequence, nor does it require a priori channel information. So, we can increase the bandwidth efficiency. The linear prediction error method is perhaps the most attractive in practice due to the insensitive to blind channel estimator and equalizer length mismatch as well as for its simple adaptive algorithms. In this paper, we propose method for fractionally spaced blind equalizer with arbitrary delay using one-step forward prediction error filter from second-order statistics of the received signals for SIMO channel. Our algorithm utilizes the forward prediction error as training sequences for data estimation and desired signal for channel estimation.

Sensor Fusion and Error Compensation Algorithm for Pedestrian Navigation System

  • This paper presents the pedestrian navigation algorithm and the error compensation filter. The pedestrian navigation system (PNS) consists of the MEMS inertial sensors, the fluxgate, and the small-size GPS receiver. PNS calculates the navigational information using the signal patterns of the accelerometers. And the navigational information is completed by integration of the patterns, the fluxgate, and the GPS information. In general, PNS can provide the better solution than the low-cost inertial navigation system.

Parametric studies on smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations for accurate estimation of open surface flow force

  • The optimal parameters for the fluid-structure interaction analysis using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) for fluids and finite elements for structures, respectively, are explored, and the effectiveness of the simulations with those parameters is validated by solving several open surface fluid problems. For the optimization of the Equation of State (EOS) and the simulation parameters such as the time step, initial particle spacing, and smoothing length factor, a dam-break problem and deflection of an elastic plate is selected, and the least squares analysis is performed on the simulation results. With the optimal values of the pivotal parameters, the accuracy of the simulation is validated by calculating the exerted force on a moving solid column in the open surface fluid. Overall, the SPH-FEM coupled simulation is very effective to calculate the fluid-structure interaction. However, the relevant parameters should be carefully selected to obtain accurate results.

  • While recognition of isolated units of writing, such as a character or a word, has been extensively studied, emphasis on the segmentation itself has been lacking. In this paper we propose an active segmentation method for handwritten Hangul address strings based on the Run-length code. A slant correction algorithm, which is considered as an important preprocessing step for the segmentation, is presented. Three fundamental candidate estimation functions are introduced to detect the clues on touching points, and the classification of touching types is attempted depending on the structural peculiarity of Hangul. Our experiments show segmentation performance of 88.2% on touching characters with minimal over-segmentation.
