This experiment was carried out to develop the mass propagation system for producing plug plantlets using stem cuttings of virus-tree microtubers in potato. Cocopeat, vermiculite, perlite and peatmoss were combined and used as plug nursery media to find out the best combination suitable for the growth of seedlings derived from microtubers. Seedling growth was favored in high temperature (above 2$0^{\circ}C$) and a long-day photoperiod(above 16 hours) condition, while stolons and microtubers formed in outdoor condition. Shoot and root multiplication was not affected by NAA 10mg /1 or IAA 10mg /1 treatment. At the early growth stage of plug plantlets, the number of leaves and roots and the length of root increased significantly when nodes from the upper (near to apex) part of shoots rather than from basal part were taken. But after transplanting, these differences among these characters were not observed. At ninety days after transplanting the plug plantlets in spring time, plant was around 70 to 80cm in height, and the number of stolons and tubers were ten and seven, respectively.

The occurrence of brain stem stroke after lumbar selective nerve root block seem to be an uncommon event comparing it to after cervical selective nerve root block. We recently experienced a 60-year-old man who were diagnosed as left lateral medullary infarction (Wallenberg's syndrome) after lumbar selective nerve root block. He was treated by traditional Korean medicine with acupunture, Pulsed electromagetic therapy (PEMT), herb medicine. The range of motion of upper and lower extremity, manual muscle test, Korean version of Berg balance scale (K-BBS) and Korean version of Barthel index (K-MBI) were adopted to measure the resulting recovery after 4 weeks treatment. Traditional Korean medicine was effective for rehabilitation of patient. Further studies are needed to set up and Korean medical protocol for Wallenberg's syndrome.

This study was conducted to examine effects of plant growth regulators and light resources on the formation of multiple shoot and plant regeneration of Hovenia dulcis var. koreana Nakai. Stem and shoot tip were cultured on MS medium or WPM supplemented with various plant growth regulators. At the single treatment, the highest shoot formation was obtained when stem explants were cultured on WPM supplemented with kinetin $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. MS medium containing NAA 0.1 and TDZ $0.1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ gave the best results for shoot induction rate and shoot growth in combination treatments. Of the BAP and kinetin tested, BAP $0.5mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ on WPM was found to be more effective for shoot growth from shoot tip. Under white fluorescent light treatment, shoot growth was much higher than blue, red LED treatments. Root induction from in vitro growth of plantlet was the best on WPM supplemented with $1.0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ IBA. The results suggest that selection of plant growth regulators and light resources could be important factor to achieve an efficient in vitro growth.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of planting density on the growth characteristics and root yield of Achyranthes japonica N. from 1995 to 1996. Stem diameter, no. of branch and fresh weight of above-ground parts per plant were reduced by increasing the planting density, but stem length, length and diameter of main root increased at high density, $25{\times}5cm$. The heighest percent of large roots was 71 % at $25{\times}5cm$ planting density. The dry root yield per 10a at $25{\times}5cm$ planting density was 7% higher than 306kg of $20{\times}5cm$ planting density, but root yields were lower in other planting density compared to $25{\times}5cm$ planting density. The root dry weight showed negative correlation with stem diameter, no. of branch and fresh weight of above-ground parts per plant but showed positive correlation with stem length, length and diameter of main root.
In order to select the water flooding-tolerant trees among Korean oaks, we cultivated the sapling of 6 deciduous oak species, Quercus acutissima, Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, Q. dentata, Q. aliena and Q. serrata, under the water flooding treatment and the control, and analysed the growth difference among them. For comparing the growth between treatment and control, we measured 13 morphological and ecological traits, such as leaf Leaf number, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, shoot length, stem length, stem diameter, root length, plant length, leaf weight, stem weight, root weight, plant weight. Q. serrata have no growth difference between water flooding treatment and control, but the rest 5 species showed the growth reduction in water flooding treatment. Tolerance of oak species to water flooding was risen in order of Quercus acutissima, Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, Q. dentata, Q. aliena and Q. serrata. Thus, among Korean deciduous oaks, it is desirable to plant Q. serrata for flood plain restoration of river.

This study was carried out in order to investigate the early growth and root development characteristics of Peucedanum japonicum container seedlings. The experiment was performed by containers (128 and 200 cavities containers) and shading levels (0%, 35%, 50% and 75% shading). Germination rate of P. japonicum seeds was getting higher in the lower shading level and the highest in the full sunlight (71.9%). Plant height was the highest under 50% shading of all containers. Fresh weight and dry weight of the shoot (leaves + stem) were the highest under 50% shading of all containers, too. Meanwhile, fresh weight and dry weight of the root per plant were the highest under the full sunlight of 128 cavities container such as 0.34 g and 0.03 g, respectively. Total root length, root project area and root surface area were higher under the full sunlight of 128 cavities container such as 234.5 cm, $6.6cm^2$ and $20.8cm^2$, respectively and the next higher was under 35% shading such as 201.7 cm, $5.9cm^2$ and $18.4cm^2$, respectively. A case of root volume was the highest with $0.15cm^3$ under the full sunlight. As a result of the surveying the whole experiment, it is concluded that the shoot and root of P. japonicum seedling grow nicely by maintaining 35% shading.
The selected five plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) strains, WR8-3 (Pseudomonas fluorescens), WR8-6 (P. putida), WR9-9 (P. fluorescens), WR9-11 (Pseudomonas sp.), and WR9-16 (P. putida) isolated in the rhizosphere of watermelon plants were tested on their growth promotion and control effect against gummy stem rot of watermelon. Strains, WR8-3 and WR9-16 significantly increased stem length of watermelon, and there was a little increase in leaf area, fresh weight and root length when strains, WR8-3, WR9-9 and WR9-16 were treated. Generally, seed treatment was better for plant growth promotion than the soil drench, but there was no significant difference. Seed treatment and soil drench of each bacterial strain also significantly reduced the mean lesion area (MLA) by gummy stem rot, but there was no significant difference between the two treatments. At initial inoculum densities of each strain ranging from 10$^6\;to\;10^{15}$ cfu/g seed, approximately the same level of disease resistance was induced. But resistance induction was not induced at the initial inoculum density of 10$^3$ cfu/g seed. Resistance was induced by treating the strains, WR9-9, WR9-11 and WR9-16, on all of four watermelon varieties tested, and there was no significant difference in the decrease of gummy stem rot among varieties. Populations of the strains treated initially at log 9-10 cfu/g seed, followed with a rapid decrease from planting day to 1 week after planting, but the population density was maintained above log 5.0 cfu/g soil until 4 weeks after planting. Generally no or very weak in vitro antagonism was observed at the strains treated excepting WR9-11. Rifampicin-resistant bacteria which had been inoculated were not detected in the stems or leaves, which suggesting that the bacterium and the pathogens remained spatially separated during the experiment. This is the first report of rsistance induction in watermelon to gummy stem rot by PGPR strains.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of cadmium on the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana when they were treated with different concentrations of cadmium. The growth of stem was stimulated in the concentrations up to fifty times higher than the official standard concentration of cadmium of pollutant exhaust notified by the Ministry of Environment, but it decreased in the concentration one hundred fifty times or more higher in proportion to the degree of concentration. The growth of root was similar to that of stem, except that the decrease was gradual in the concentration fifty times or more higher. The growth of leaf was almost the same as that of stem, that is, it was stimulated the increase of leaf surface area in the concentration fifty times higher, but decreased in the concentration one hundred fifty times or more higher in proportion to the degree of concentration. The fresh weights of the plants were increased in accord with the degree of growth of the stem and leaf. Concentration of cadmium accumulated in the plants was increased in proportion to the concentration of cadmium. These results show that the growth of plants was stimulated in the soil polluted by cadmium up to fifty times higher than the official standard concentration, but it was decreased in proportion to the degree of concentration in the plants grown in the presence of cadmium more than one hundred fifty times.
This study was carried out to investigate spectral irradiance characteristics of blue, yellow, and blue-black colored polyethylene (PE) shading net and the effect on growth characteristics and yield in ginseng seedling. The spectral irradiance $({\mu}mol/m^2/s/nm)$ showed the peak at 498 nm in both of blue and blue-black PE shading net, and 606 nm under yellow PE one. The intensity of blue light in blue shading was more strong than that of blue-black shading, control. Blue shading was increased by 17% and 23% in accumulated quantum for daytime, $0.5^{\circ}C and $0.2^{\circ}C$ in maximum temperature on June 2 than that of yellow and blue-black shading, respectively, but heat injury ratio of the former was lower than that of the latter. Chlorophyll content and stem length in blue shading were decreased more significantly than those of yellow and blue-black shading. The specific leaf weight was higher under blue and yellow shading than that of blue-black shading. Ginseng seedling harvested in blue shading was increased by $13{\sim}17%$ in the number of root, and $17{\sim}20%$ in root weight per $m^ 2 compared to yellow and blue-black shading owing to the increase of survived plant, and the decrease of specific leaf weight, heat injury ratio, and stem length.
A basal stem rot disease of potato (Solanum tubersum) grown on hydroponic system in greenhouse was found in Jeju-city, Jeju Province of Korea in January 2001. The symptoms occurred on basel stem and root, and than plants eventually were died. The casual fungus isolate from basal stem rot symptom and identified to be Pythium myriotylum on the basis of mycological characteristics; Main hyphae wide were 8.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. Oogonia were spherical, smooth, mostly terminal in shape and 26.4∼31.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. Antheridia were 9.6∼14,4${\times}$4.8-9.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. Oospores were spherical, smooth, aplerotic in shape and 21.6∼26.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size. This is the first report on the basal stem rot of potato caused by P. myriotylum in Korea.
