Physiological activities, including antioxidant activity, were examined in water and 80% ethanol extracts of leaf, stem, and root parts of Welsh onion. Total phenol and flavonoid contents were highest in both extracts of leaf and lowest in those of stem among parts of Welsh onion. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity was highest in root among 80% ethanol extracts and in leaf among water extracts. 2,2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical scavenging activity and reducing power were the highest in both extracts of Welsh onion leaf. Inhibitory activities against lipase in both extracts and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase in water extract were also highest in Welsh onion leaf. Alcohol dehydrogenase promoting activity was also highest in extracts of Welsh onion leaf. Both leaf and water extracts of stem only exhibited antimicrobial effects on Gram (-) Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This result implies that leaf is the most optimal part of Welsh onion as functional material, although stem and root parts of Welsh onion also exhibited physiological activity, including antioxidant activity.
A study was made to clarify the topographical. and Physical characteristics of ginseng field in terms of soil science and to find the relationship between soil characteristics and ginseng growth, as well as yield of ginseng roots Forty nine farmer's red ginseng field of ginseng growing area were chosen for this study and investigated for two years. The results obtained were as follow. 1. Ginseng fie1ds with high yield which represent the more than 1.8kg of ginseng root per 3.2m2 were found in soil series of Bancheon, Yeongog, Weongog, etc. whose texture were the clay loam to clay soil. On the other hand, ginseng field with low yield were observed in soil series of seogto whose texture was loamy soil with high content of gravels. 2 Soil of ginseng field with high yield had higher content of clay. silt soil moisture and soil pore as compared with soils of low yields. These soil characteristics were positively correlated with stem length stem diameter and root weight of ginseng plsnt and negatively correlated with rate of missing plant 3. The adequate ranges of soil 3 phase from high yield ginseng field were 40 to 50% of solid Phase, 22 to 35% of liquid phase, 25 to 35% of gaseous phase in top soil and 45 to 55% of solid phase. 28 to 30% of liquid phase. 15 to 20% of gaseous phase in subsoil respectively.
Chionanthus retusus has been used for landscaping and gardening trees, foods and medicines. This study was carried out to analyze the effect of fertilization on the growth performance of container seedlings (1-year-old) in C. retusus. We used multifeed 19 (MF) as a fertilizer, and measured the height, root collar diameter (RCD), biomass, seedling quality index (SQI) chlorophyll contents and chlorophyll fluorescence of the seedlings. The findings of this paper showed that the height, RCD, H/D ratio, T/R ratio and the fresh and dry weight of seedlings increased after fertilization. The moisture content of the stem and root did not show any significant difference among fertilizations, except in the case of the leaf. Production distribution such as the dry weight ratio of leaves and the stem dry weight ratio of fertilized seedlings had a higher value than that of non-treatment. SQI was the highest in MF 1,000 mg/L and 2,000 mg/L treatment. Chlorophyll contents (SPAD value) also increased with the increase in fertilization concentrations. Chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) showed the highest value of 0.8 in MF 2,000 mg/L treatment.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of stem-cutting (SC) length and portion on the major agronomic characters related with dry matter production and accumulation, and to examine their relationships in cassava. When cassava was planted with longer SCs or with older portion SCs, major canopy or source characters like leaf number and leaf area index developed excessively, while tuber yields could be reduced due to the decrease of root/shoot ratio, relative growth rate, root dry weight, and harvest index, particularly in the bitter varieties (high cyanide-level varieties). It was considered that the sweet varieties (low cyanide-level varieties) be earlybulked with higher tuber yield when they are planted with the 25-30 cm long SCs or with the SCs from young type to semi-mature portions of mother stems, while the bitter varieties with the 15-20 cm long SCs or with the SCs from semi-mature to hardwood portions of mother stems, respectively. However, a significant interaction between length and portion of SC was not observed in all agronomic characters.

This experiment was conducted to establish the in vitro propagation of Dendrobium moniliforme through protocorm like body (PLB) induction from the culture of leaf, stem and root explants. Frequency of PLB formation from root explants was higher than those of leaf and stem explants. PLB's proliferation in MS medium including 1.0 mg/L NAA was better than 1.0 mg/L IBA. Frequency of PLB's proliferation on medium with various concentrations of BA, Kinetin, Tidiazuron (0. 1.0, 3.0 mg/L) and NAA (0, 1.0 mg/L) was tested. The maximun proliferation of PLB's was obtained on MS medium supplemented with 3.0 mg/L BA and 1.0 mg/L NAA after 6 weeks of culture. Addition of 200 mg/L activated charcoal (AC) and 30 g/L sucrose was effective on PLB proliferation for D. moniliforme.
The vascular cambium in Ginkgo biloba seedling began to differentiate in the cotyledonary node, and then the differentiation proceeded bidirectionally from the cotyledonary node toward the stem and root. In tangential view, procambium at the early developmental stage was a homogeneous structure consisted of almost similar cells in shape, and at the later stage the procambium became a heterogeneous one consisted of long cells and short cells. Such a differentiation pattern in the cotyledonary node was similar to that in the stem. However, it was different from that in the root. Fusiform initials and ray initials consisting the vascular cambium were originated from the long cells and the short cells, respectively. The long cells and the fusiform initials in the cotyledonary node were shorter and wider than those in the first internode.ernode.
The present experiments differning from that conducted by agriculturists with the first consideration of food or seed production were performed in order to investigate the density effect on dry matter production in the artified population of maize. Three experimental plots were established and one seed was sown in the first plot, 2 seeds in the second plot and 3 seeds in the third plot, respectively. The space of each ridge was designed with 30cm in width and 50cm in length. The space of each seed was 4cm and the growth amount by density was measured through three times. The results obtained are as follows: 1) The total growth amount per unit area was in the order of the third, second and first plots until the second sampling. At the third sampling the whole plots showed almost the same growth amount except the first plot which showed a slightly smaller amount. 2) The growth amount per individual plant was in the order of the third, second and first plots until the second sampling, while the first plot showed drastic growth compared with the other two plots at the third sampling. 3) The growth amount by each organ(leaf, stem and root) of the plant body was markedly abundant in the stem of the non-productive part compared with that in the leaf of the productive part. Especially the root was affected remarkably by density and the first plot showed an abundant growth in comparison with the other plots which were too poor to resist the gound surface.
This study was conducted to investigate effect of activated charcoal on growth and yield of Scutelltaria baicalensis G. in different degree of activated charcoal consistency. The results obtained are summarized as follows. Stem length was shown the longest in activated charcoal 30%, and short in control. Also stem diameter was shown the thickest in activated charcoal 30%, and thin in control. Length of main root and thickness of main root were good in activated charcoal 30%. Quality and yield of Scutellaria baicalensis G. were the highest by activated charcoal 30%. Therefore, optimum consistency of activated charcoal was activated charcoal 30%.
Azospirillum sp., photosynthetic bacteria(Rhodopseudomonas sp.) and Pseudomonas sp. were separated and screened from soil and soilless culture, and identificated. The antifungal activities against root-infected pathogens and plant growth promoting effects of the cultured solution of the starins(5.0$\times$105 cells/$m\ell$) in the peatmoss compost on the early growth of cucumber and tomato seedling were investigated. Azospirillum sp. and Pseudomonas sp. showed a antifungal activities against Fusarium sp., Pythium sp. and Rhizoctonia sp in thed ranges of 51.0% to 72.0% on potato dextrose agar medium, however photosynthetic bacteria had not antifungal activities. When cultured solution of Azospirillum sp., photosynthetic bacterial and Pseudomonas sp. were bacterialized by mixing with peatmoss compost, early growth of cucumber and tomato in terms of plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, root length, fresh anf dry weight of leaf, stem and root were promoted, especially photosynthetic bacteria had a the best plant growth promting activities.
Two potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars were transformed by Agrobacterium tumefaciens harboring cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter and $\beta$-glucuronidase (GUS) gene. Expression patterns of the CaMV 35S promoter according to tissue types and developmental stages, and genetic stability of GUS gene were investigated in the clonal progenies of transgenic potatoes. Kanamycin-resistant shoot emerged from tuber disc after 4 weeks of culture, and root was induced 6 weeks after culture on the selection medium. Shooting frequency of cvs. Superior and Dejima were 43% and 27%, respectively. Mature transformants and their clonal progenies showed no phenotypical abnormality. GUS activity was expressed primarily at parenchymatous cells of phloem tissue around the vascular cambium in the stem and root, and higher activity was found at the apical meristem of shoot, root and adventious shoot bud. GUS activity was higher at tubers of young explants than at stored tubers. These facts indicate that expression level of the CaMV 35S promoter differed according to tissue types and developmental stages of the organs. The GUS gene was stably inherited to each clonal progeny and normally expressed.
