Total phenol content was obtained from the stem extract of 7.8 (g/100g, D.W.) and root extract of 10.5 (g/100g, D.W.) on Rosa rugosa. S-4 and R-2 compounds were isolated from the stem and root of R. rugosa. The structure of S-4 and R-2 compounds was assigned as catechin by $^{1}H,\;^{13}C$ CNMR signal and TOF-MS. The tannin content of stem extract was 752.5 (mg/100g, D.W.) as 6.3 of gallic acid, 61.5 of epicatechin and 684.8 of catechin. The tannin content of root extract was higher about 2 times (1676.0) as 6.8 of gallic acid, 160.3 of epicatechin and 1508.5 of catechin than that of stem. It was shown that catechin was main compound in the stem and root extracts of R. rugosa. Antioxidant activities were stronger low concentration, and were not different of stem and root extracts. As the results, stem and root of R. rugosa were evaluated, as natural antioxidant resource.
Lodging is classified as root lodging caused by the loss of supporting force in the root, bending caused by the deformation of the stem and breaking where the stem breaks down as loads exceeding critical elasticity were applied. This research excluded breaking which is not in a state of equilibrium and tried to partition the level of lodging using an algebraic model in root lodging and stem lodging, or bending. When a vertical load was applied, the deformation of the stem of rice plant showed the form of a quadratic equation. The trace of the panicle neck in the process of lodging was an ellipse-shape. When loading was pure root lodging, the trace of the panicle neck became a circle of which culm length is the radius. When it was a pure stem lodging, the trace of the panicle neck is an ellipse of which major axis is culm length and minor axis is 0.64* culm length. When both stem lodging and root lodging occurred in a natural setting, the partitioning of lodging can be calculated by a formula using eccentricity of an ellipse, S=e*100/0.768(S is the ratio of stem lodging in the whole lodging, e is eccentricity of the ellipse). This method is expected to be useful in simple lodging partitioning. We could also calculate the partitioning of stem lodging and root lodging as units of angles as an accuracy method, by using a straight line calculated by differentiating a quadratic equation of stem deformation at the origin of the coordinates. These two methods for dividing root and stem lodging showed different values. However, each of them showed almost same values with different lodging degree in one plant.
Background: Ginsenosides, which have strong biological activities, can be divided into polar or less-polar ginsenosides. Methods: This study evaluated the phytochemical diversity of the saponins in Panax ginseng (PG) root, American ginseng (AG) root, and Panax notoginseng (NG) root; the stem-leaves from Panax ginseng (SPG) root, American ginseng (SAG) root, and Panax notoginseng (SNG) root as well as the saponins obtained following heating and acidification [transformed Panax ginseng (TPG), transformed American ginseng (TAG), transformed Panax notoginseng (TNG), transformed stem-leaves from Panax ginseng (TSPG), transformed stem-leaves from American ginseng (TSAG), and transformed stem-leaves from Panax notoginseng (TSNG)]. The diversity was determined through the simultaneous quantification of the 16 major ginsenosides. Results: The content of ginsenosides in NG was found to be higher than those in AG and PG, and the content in SPG was greater than those in SNG and SAG. After transformation, the contents of polar ginsenosides in the raw saponins decreased, and contents of less-polar compounds increased. TNG had the highest levels of ginsenosides, which is consistent with the transformation of ginseng root. The contents of saponins in the stem-leaves were higher than those in the roots. The transformation rate of SNG was higher than those of the other samples, and the loss ratios of total ginsenosides from NG (6%) and SNG (4%) were the lowest among the tested materials. In addition to the conversion temperature, time, and pH, the crude protein content also affects the conversion to rare saponins. The proteins in Panax notoginseng allowed the highest conversion rate. Conclusion: Thus, the industrial preparation of less-polar ginsenosides from SNG is more efficient and cheaper.
Crude extract of Coptis japonica root-stem was evaluated for antifungal activity against Phytophthora capsici, Fusarium oxysporum, Colletotrichum dematium, Colletotrichum truncatum, Botrytis cinerea, Botryosphaeria dothidea and Alternaria porri, and antifungal active compound from the extract was identified. In addition, the usefulness of the extract for some plants disease control was investigated. Crude extract of C. japonica root-stem exhibited antifungal activity against P. capsici, F. oxysporum, C. dematium, B. cinerea, B. dothidea and A. porri. Antifungal activity of the substance isolated from C. japonica root-stem was similar to a standard chemical berberine-Cl. Red-pepper fruit rot, sesame stem rot and welsh-onion alternaria leaf spot were effectively controlled by the crude extract of C. japonica root-stem. Phytotoxicity was not observed in the red-pepper and welsh-onion leaves and red-pepper and strawberry fruits with exogenous foliage application of the crude extract. Seeds germination and radicle growth of red-pepper and sesame were inhibited by the crude extract of C. japonica root-stem. 4.24g of yellowish compound per 100g of C. japonica root-stem was obtained. The compound was identified as berberine-Cl by HPLC.
To get basic data for the utilization of S. herbacea L. as a raw material in food and Chinese herbs, chemical compositions of its leaves, stem and root were investigated. Leaves had the highest level of moisture and the lowest bevel of total sugar. The crude protein and crude lipid contents of the stem were similar to those of the root. Crude ash and salt contents (dry basis) in leaves were considerably higher than those of the stem and root. Total amino acid contents of leaves, stem and root were 1,270 mg/100 g, 1,525 mg/100 g, and 1,569 mg/100 g, respectively. Although the amino acid compositions of loaves, stein, and root were different, their major amino acids were glutamic acid, leuicine, isoleucine and aspartic acid. The rich minerals in leaves, stem and root were Na, K and Ca.
The pattern of nitrogen fixation by water culture of Sesbania, known as an effective legume plant for nitrogen fixation, in the growth cabinet by Leonard-Jar methods and nitrogen fixation pattern to sesbania are as follows: 1. Dry weight per pot after inoculation of rhizobia to sesbania was by the order for root + stem > root > control and nitrogen contents of plant parts also showed the same tendency as dry weight except leaf. 2. $^{15}N$ value based on natural abundance was by the order of root + stem > root > control, $^{15}N$ value of root nodule and stem nodule among total nitrogen content exhibited positive value but it showed negative value from root, stem and leaf.
An undescribed black root rot of soybean, caused by Cylindrocladium crotalariae, was observed in Suweon area. The diseased plants showed yellowing at the top and dry rot at the root. Lesions of roots and stems in the soil were red to brown and main roots were cracked. Although not observed the disease in the field, leaves of inoculated test plants in the greenhouse exhibited circular, brown lesion surrounded by chloratic halos. The fungus was recovered in culture from the infected stem and root, and the perithecia of Calonectria crotalariae were demonstrated to be present as well as the cylindrocladium state. The fungus was pathogenic to the root, stem, petioles and leaves of soybean. The probable source of primary inoculum was microsclerotia formed in infected soybean root and stem from the previous season's soybean debris. Black root rot by this fungus was considered to be one of detrimental factors to the maximum yield of soybean. From the morphological and physiological characteristics and pathogenic behaviors, this fungus was identified as Cylindrocladium(Calonectria) crotalariae.
Objectives : This study reviewed the antioxidant activity of each part of Portulacae Herba (PH) in order to better analyze the possibility of PH being used as a natural material. Methods : The root, stem, and leaves of the PH were separated, dried at $50^{\circ}C$, put in a 70% ethanol and then extracted three times every six hours. Antioxidant activities was performed by measuring the total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents, DPPH, ABTS, nitrite, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, and $Fe^{2+}$ chelating. Results : The total polyphenol and total flavonoid contents was highest in the root, then the leaves, and lastly the stem. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities for the root extract indicated the highest activity followed by the leaf and stem extracts. It also showed similar activity to that of the ascorbic acid. Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and $Fe^{2+}$ chelating activity resulted to be highest in the root extract and then the leaf and stem extracts. Nitrite scavenging activity decreased with higher pH levels, and activity was highest in the order of root extract, leaf extract, and stem extract. Also, in reaction to a solution with a pH 1.2 level, the root extract showed similar scavenging activity to that of BHT. Conclusions : Therefore, based on the above results, it was verified that the roots of PH have a high antioxidant level, and they can be considered to have potential to be applied to functional food, cosmetics, and medicine with antioxidant efficacy.
Objectives: Despite the pharmacological potential of the roots and stems of hemp based on literatures, active research has not been conducted for a long time. Comparative experiments were conducted on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and improvement of glucose uptake using Cannabis root and stem extracts. Methods: Antioxidant contents in Cannabis root and stem extracts were examined with total phenolic, tannin, flavonoid assay. Anti-inflammatory properties were tested in lipopolysaccharides-treated RAW264.7 cells. Efficacy of Cannabis root and stem extracts on glucose uptake was investigated using fluorescent glucose analog (2-NBDG) in palmitate-treated HepG2 cells. The mechanism of action on metabolism was examined by western blot. Results: Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory efficacy were greater in stem extracts, but improvements in glucose uptake performed under various conditions were found to be greater in root extracts. It is assumed that Cannabis root extracts exhibited an improvement in glucose uptake through mechanisms such as AMP-activated protein kinase activation, not depending on general antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Conclusions: Further research is needed on the mechanisms and substances that exhibit the anti-diabetic effects of Cannabis roots and stems.
We compared the effect between CAS and WAS(root, stem) on mast cell-mediated allergic reaction. CAS, WAS-root and WAS-stem, significantly inhibited compound 48/80-induced systemic allergic reaction(1g/kg) and histamine release from RPMC(1mg/ml). CAS, WAS-root and WAS-stem also inhibited passive cutaneous anaphylactic reaction. In addition, IgE-induced $TNF-{\alpha}$ secretion from RBL-2H3 was inhibited by pretreatment of CAS, WAS-root or WAS-stem$(0.01{\mu}g/ml)$. Taken together, inhibitory effect on mast cell-mediated allergic reactions of WAS-root is greater than those of WAS-stem but less than those of CAS.
