An Electrochemical Evaluation on the Crevice Corrosion of 430 Stainless Steel with Variation of Crevice Wide by Micro Capillary Tubing Method (Micro Capillary Tube 방법을 이용한 430 스테인레스강 틈의 폭변화에 따른 틈부식의 전기화학적 평가)

  • In this study, the IR drop theory was adopted to explain the initiation of crevice corrosion in the framework of IR drop in crevice electrolyte. Furthermore, the electrochemical polarization was measured to study the mechanism of crevice corrosion for type STS430 stainless steel. lest method adopts under condition that the size of specimen is $10\times20\times5mm,\;in\;1N\;H_2SO_4+0.1N\;NaCl$ solution, and the artificial crevice gap sizes are three kinds, the Micro capillary tube size is inner diameter 0.04 mm, outer diameter 0.08 mm. Crevice corrosion is measured under the applied voltage of passivation potential -200mV/SCE, resulted from anodic potentio-dynamic polarization to the external surface along the crevice. The potential difference was measured by depth profile by Micro capillary tube which inserted in the crevice. The obtained results of this study showed that 1) As artificial crevice gap size became narrow, the current density was increased, whereas no crevice corrosion was found in the crevice gap size $3\times0.5\times16mm\;in\;1N\;H_2SO_4+0.1N\;NaCl\;solution\;at\;20^{\circ}C$ 2) potential of the crevice was about from -220 to -358mV which is lower than that of external surface potential of -200mV The results so far confirmes that the potential drop(so-called IR drop) in the crevice is one of the major mechanisms the process of crevice corrosion for 430 stainless steel.

  • The intention of this paper is to provide realistic values of design thermal loads applicable to composite box girder bridges on the basis of the statistical analysis of long-term measured temperature data. For this purpose, temperatures were recorded at a newly constructed composite box girder bridge during about 20 months. Before analyzing the extreme values, major thermal loading parameters that characterize the temperature profile are defined, and a seasonal behavior of those is examined in detail. The limit distributions of the thermal loading parameters are then determined by the tail-equivalence method, and the thermal loading parameters corresponding to selected return period are calculated. Finally, the results are compared to the specifications suggested in a current design code for thermal loads, and it is concluded that the current design code is unsuitable for representing the self-equilibrated thermal stresses in composite bridges, and the horizontal temperature difference which is not suggested in current design code should be taken Into account in particular cases.

  • The effect of pipe materials on biofilm communities were investigated by CLPP (community level physiology profile) using Biolog GN plates. Heterotrophic bacterial concentrations were $10^4\;-\;10^6\;CFU/cm^2$ and there was no differences between galvanized iron and carbon steel. Average optical density of Biolog plate was similar between two pipe materials. However, CLPP was different according to the type of pipe materials and exposed times to tap water, and CLPP was independent of bacterial concentration. This represents the differences of bacterial communities with pipes and water contact times.

  • Reinforced concrete structures are widely used in civil engineering projects around the world in different designs. Due to the great evolution in computational equipment and numerical methods, structural analysis has become more and more reliable, and in turn more closely approximates reality. Thus among the many numerical methods used to carry out these types of analyses, the finite element method has been highlighted as an optimized tool option, combined with the non-linear and linear analysis techniques of structures. In this paper, the behavior of reinforced concrete beams was analyzed in two different configurations: i) with welding and ii) conventionally lashed stirrups using annealed wire. The structures were subjected to normal and tangential forces up to the limit of their bending resistance capacities to observe the cracking process and growth of the concrete structure. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of welded wire fabric as shear reinforcement in concrete prismatic beams under static loading conditions. Experimental analysis was carried out in order compare the maximum load of both configurations, the experimental load-time profile applied in the first configuration was used to reproduce the same loading conditions in the numerical simulations. Thus, comparisons between the numerical and experimental results of the welded frame beam show that the proposed model can estimate the concrete strength and failure behavior accurately.

  • Since ceramic layers coated on machinery components inevitably experience the changes in their properties it is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of ceramic coating layers nondestructively for a reliable use of coated components and 4heir remaining life prediction. To address such a need, in the present study, an ultrasonic backward radiation technique is applied to investigate the characteristics of leaky Rayleigh surface waves propagating through the very thin TiN ceramic layers coated on AISI 1045 steel or austenitic 304 steel substrate with three different conditions of surface roughness, coating layer thickness and wear condition. In the experiments performed in the present work, the peak angle and the peak amplitude of ultrasonic backward radiation profile varied sensitively according to three specimen preparation renditions. in fact, this result demonstrates a high possibility of the ultrasonic backward radiation as an effective tool for the nondestructive characterization of the resting layers even in such a thin regime.

  • The corrosion-fatigue characteristics of the 12Cr steel, which is widely used in fossil power plants as a turbine blade material, are evaluated nondestructively by use of the Rayleigh surface wave. In this study, the frequency dependency of the Rayleigh surface wave is investigated indirectly by measuring the angular dependency of the backward radiation of the incident ultrasonic wave in the aged specimens, and then compared to the corrosion-fatigue characteristics. The width of the backward radiation profile decreases as the increase of the aging temperature, which seems to result from the increase of the effective degrading layer thickness. This parameter also shows an inversely proportionality to the exponent, m, in the Paris law which predicts the crack size increasement due to fatigue. The result observed in this study demonstrates high potential of the backward radiated ultrasound as a tool for the nondestructive evaluation of the corrosion-fatigue characteristics of the aged materials.

  • This paper presents a study that attempted to improve the site applicability of profile sheets and check the effects of bending reinforcement in composite profiled beams, and consequently, to suggest an improved modular-type CB2 and two types of bending reinforcement methods. As a result of the reinforcing and reforming modular profiled beam experiment conducted, CBIIshowed an adequate deformation capacity as well as a sufficient plastic plateau at the maximum load and thereafter. For all the specimens, an insignificant modular slip occurred while linear relations were kept constant, at up to approximately 50% of the maximum load and at constant linear relations. The experimental values were very low. Probably, due to the small-scale experiment, the area of the concrete for the concrete filling and covering might have been insufficient, which might have led to the failure to improve the strength. Comparing the results with the standard design stress, all the specimens-except for T16 and B16-indicated more than 0.9. Based on the standard design stress, the reinforced modular profiled beam was consideredto have positive applicability.

  • Lithium cobalt oxide cathode for thin-film rechargeable lithium batteries were fablicated by electron-beam evaporation. Annealed lithium cobalt oxide, which was deposited on to stainless steel substrate, showed well-developed (003) planes of the hexagonal structure and potential plateau at $\~3.9 V$. Lithium cobalt oxide thin films had the stoichiometric Li/co ratio at high deposition rates and exhibited high discharge capacity at $15{\AA}/s$. As the annealing temperature increased, discharge capacity increased with maximum value at $700^{\circ}C$, but showed low capacity as a result of reaction with substrate above $700^{\circ}C$. Unuiformity of the lithium and cobalt in the depth profile gave initial capacity loss with charge/discharge performance.

Impact of Dental Treatment under General Anesthesia or Intravenous Sedation on Oral Health-related Quality of Life in Pediatric Dental Patients (전신마취 또는 정주진정 하 치과치료가 소아 환자의 구강 건강과 관련된 삶의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study aimed to assess the perception of a child's primary caregiver on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of dental treatment under general anesthesia (GA) or intravenous sedation (IV-SED) in pediatric dental patients. Self-administered questionnaires were completed before dental treatment under GA or IV-SED by 52 primary caregivers of healthy pediatric patients (10 years old or younger), and 43 (84%) of these caregivers completed the same questionnaires within 6 months after treatment. The Korean version of Child Oral Health Impact Profile (COHIP) and the Family Impact Scale (FIS) were used to assess OHRQoL in the questionnaires. The scores of COHIP and FIS improved after dental treatment. Demographic variables such as gender did not affect the improvement of COHIP and FIS, and age did not affect that of COHIP. However, baseline FIS score of younger patients was better than that of older patients before dental treatment. Regardless of the treatment variables, all COHIP and FIS scores were improved after dental treatment. COHIP score improved more in cases with pulp treatments compared to those without the treatments. On the other hand, FIS score improved less in cases with posterior stainless steel crown restorations compared to those without them. Anterior esthetic restorations and anterior teeth extractions did not affect the degree of improvement. Based on the primary caregiver's perceptions, the OHRQoL of healthy pediatric patients was improved by dental treatment under GA or IV-SED.

  • Improving furnace efficiency is a high priority need for aluminum, glass, steel and other metal casting industries. Oxy-fuel combustion is considered to be one of the most effective method to improve thermal efficiency and reduce $NO_x$, SOx and $CO_2$ emissions for high temperature furnaces. The characteristics of an oxy-fuel flame, in particular its shape, radiation profile and exhaust gas composition are considerably different to those of an air-fuel burner. For this reason, a new approach is needed regarding factors such as burner design, power input levels, number and positioning strategies of burners and also control philosophies. In this paper will discuss the latest developments of high performance oxy-fuel combustion reheating furnace system. This high performance oxy-fuel combustion system will be shown to be technologically superior to other types of combustion systems in the areas of fuel efficiency, emissions and productivity.
