  • In testing the partial association between two variables after controlling for the S levels of a third factor, the Mantel and Haenszel (1959) statistic is often used. Since the statistic is based on the asymptotic distribution of the sum X of S hypergeometric variates, a guideline for the minimum requirements for the application of the statistic is useful. Mantel and Fleiss (1980) developed a criterion based on the guideline for the Pearson's $X^2$ statistic. The criterion requires the distance from the expected value to the closer bound of X to be at least five. The Mantel-Fleiss (MF) criterion was studied through a simulation using the hypergeometric sampling scheme. The criterion is not satisfactory. The size of statistic exceeded nominal 0.05 level nearly 1/5 of the cases even when the criteion is met. However, the results show that the statistic is much more unstable and conservative when the criterion is not met.

  • Purpose: This article is purposed to present the correct statistic method by pointing out the statistical errors after analyzing the method of articles that were published in Korean Academy Journal of Periodontology and made statistic processes in them. Methods: 488 science papers which being put in Korean Academy Journal of Periodontology published from 2000 to 2006 was divided according to year. Results: In the 308 articles that applied statistic methods, 59 articles (50.0%), the largest portion of all, were included the case that applied incorrect parametric statistic method when needed to apply parametric statistics and 38 articles (32.2%) were included in the case that applied incorrect parametric statistic method when needed to apply non-parametric statistics. Conclusions: It is necessary to present the cases of inappropriate statistical methods in order to improve the quality of academic researches. Also, to apply adequate methods of statistics, it is suggested to report the articles periodically which are comparing and analyzing the statistical methods that are applied in the international articles in periodontal field.

  • Two types of ridge regression estimators were compared with the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimator in order to select the "best" estimator when multicollinearitc existed. The ridge estimators were Mallows's (1973) $C_P$-like statistic, and Allen's (1974) PRESS-like statistic. The evaluation was conducted based on the predictive ability of a yield model developed by Matney et al. (1988). A total of 522 plots from the data of the Southwide Loblolly Pine Seed Source study was used in this study. All of ridge estimators were better in predictive ability than the OLS estimator. The ridge estimator obtained by using Mallows's statistic performed the best. Thus, ridge estimators can be recommended as an alternative estimator when multicollinearity exists among independent variables.

  • For the model validation of credit rating models, Kolmogorov-Smirnov(K-S) statistic has been widely used as a testing method of discriminatory power from the probabilities of default for default and non-default. For the credit rating works, K-S statistics are to test two identical distribution functions which are partitioned from a distribution. In this paper under the assumption that the distribution is known, modified K-S statistic which is formulated by using known distributions is proposed and compared K-S statistic.

  • This study aims to accurately estimate population distribution more specifically than administrative unites using a RK (Regression-Kriging) model. The RK model is the areal interpolation technique that involves linear regression and the Kriging model. In order to estimate a population’s distribution using a sample region, four different models were used, namely; a regression model, RK model, OK (Ordinary Kriging) model and CK (Co-Kriging) model. The results were then compared with each other. Evaluation of the accuracy and validity of evaluation analysis results were the basis RMSE (Root Mean Square Error), MAE (Mean Absolute Error), G statistic and correlation coefficient (ρ). In the sample regions, every statistic value of the RK model showed better results than other models. The results of this comparative study will be useful to estimate a population distribution of the metropolitan areas with high population density

  • Isokinetic evaluation of trunk flexors and trunk extensors was performed at $60^{\circ}/sec\;and\;120^{\circ}/sec$ of angular velocity by using cybex 6000TEF Unit on 31 healthy male white workers and 15 post-operative HILD patients with no significant difference in mean age and mean body weight between two groups, and compared each other. The purpose of this study is to obtain the isokinetic normative strength values and endurance latins for Dunk extensors and trunk flexors, and is to provide a guideline for rehabilitation program of post-operative HILD patients. The collected data were analyzed by ANOVA, Duncan's Nyktuoke Range Test, and Pearson correlation coefficiency in PC-SAS program, The results obtained were as follow ; 1. Post-operative subjects has lower isokinetic values than normal subjects in peak torque, peak torque $\%$ by body weight, total work, total work $\%$ by body weight, average power, average power $\%$ by body weight, TAAE of trunk flexors and trunk extensors, and there are significant differences with statistic value in trunk extensors at $60^{\circ}/sec$ and in trunk flexors and trunk extensors at $120^{\circ}/sec$ between two groups(p<0.05). 2. Pest-ooperative subjects has lower values for angle of peak torque than normal subjects in trunk extensors, and there are significant differences with statistic value at $60^{\circ}/sec$ and $120^{\circ}/sec$ between two groups. 3. Post-operative subjects has higher values for endurance ratios than normal subjects in trunk extensors and flexors, but there are no significant differences with statistic value between two groups. 4. Post-operative subjects has higher values than normal subjects in peak torque ratios, total work ratios, average power ratios of trunk flexors to trunk extensors, and there are significant differences with statistic value between two groups(p<0.01). 5. There is significant positive-correlation with statistic valve between peak torque and height and body weight in normal subjects(p<0.05), but Thjere is significant negative-correlation between peak torque of trunk extensor at $120^{\circ}/sec$ and age (p<0.05). 6. There is significant positive-correlation with statistic value between peak torque of trunk flexors and body weight in post-operative subjects (p<0.05), but There is significant negative-correlation between peak torque of trunk extensor add age (p<0.05). In conclusion, post-operative subjects have greater weakness in trunk musculature than normal subjects, especially there is more significant weakness in trunk extensors than in trunk flexors

  • Principal component analysis(PCA) was carried out to evaluate the water quality with the monitering data collected from 1997 to 2003 along the coastal area of Ulsan, Korea. To enhance evaluation and to complement descriptive power of traditional PCA, optimal scaling was applied to transform the original data into optimally scaled data. Cluster analysis was also applied to classify the monitering stations according to their characteristics of water quality.

  • A learning control method is proposed in this paper, using a knowledge base which contains control rules, data, and patterns of the past experience of a plant. The knowledge for plant control is retrieved from measurement data during operation and continually modified after control performance evaluation. A control method is proposed using tinually modified after control performance evaluation. A control method is proposed using fuzzy model of the plant and a recursive statistic decision method of fuzzy subset for control rule generation. Also, the resulting knowledge-based control algorithm has been applied to aprocess and its performance improvement and proper generation of appropriate control rules have been verified.

  • The probability of default on the credit evaluation study is represented as a linear combination of two distributions of default and non-default, and the distribution of the probability of default are generally known in most cases. Except the well-known Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistic for testing the identity of two distribution, Kuiper, Cramer-Von Mises, Anderson-Darling, and Watson test statistics are introduced in this work. Under the assumption that the population distribution is known, modified Cramer-Von Mises, Anderson-Darling, and Watson statistics are proposed. Based on score data generated from various probability density functions of the probability of default, the modified test statistics are discussed and compared.
