  • A doubly tethered $N-CH_3$ amide chiral stationary phase (CSP 4) based on (+)-(18-crown-6)-2,3,11,12-tetracarboxylic acid was applied to the resolution of an antiarrythmic agent, tocainide, and its analogues and the chromatographic resolution results were compared with those on a singly tethered N-H amide CSP (CSP 1), a singly tethered $N-CH_3$ amide CSP (CSP 2) and a doubly tethered N-H amide CSP (CSP 3) under an identical aqueous mobile phase condition. CSP 4 was found to be generally better than other CSPs in terms of the separation factors (${\alpha}$) and resolutions (RS). The retention times of analytes denoted by the retention factors ($k_1$) on CSP 4 were quite long compared to those on other CSPs because of the improved lipophilicity of CSP 4. The long retention times of analytes on CSP 4 were successfully controlled by the addition of a small amount of ammonium acetate to aqueous mobile phase without hurting the chiral recognition efficiency. The variation of the content and type of organic and acidic modifier in aqueous mobile phase was found not to change the chiral recognition efficiency significantly.

  • Hand Accelerometers are widely used to detect human motion patterns in real-time. It is essential to reliably identify which type of activity is performed by human subjects. This rests on having accurate template of each activity. Many human activities are represented as a set of multiple time-series data from such sensors, which are mostly non-stationary and non-linear in nature. This requires a method which can effectively extract patterns from non-stationary and non-linear data. To achieve such a goal, we propose the method to apply Hilbert-Huang Transform which is known to be an effective way of extracting non-stationary and non-linear components from time-series data. It is applied on samples of accelerometer data to determine its effectiveness.

  • In this paper, we measured and examined RTT delays and packet losses according to the changes of stationary loads for two typical stream-type traffics, a DV and a MPGE2 on the R&D Gigabit Network testbed, JGN. As the result of our actual measurements, we realized that the packet size of stationary load have no effects on a DV and a MPGE2 stream on the very high-speed network(50Mbps, IP over ATM). When its bandwidth and stationary load exceeds 95% of network bandwidth, packet losses appeared and RTT delay increased rapidly. Also we realized that the number and size of Receive & Transmit buffer on the end systems have no effects on packet losses and RTT delays.

  • The document is a white paper on Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography (HILIC) analysis method development. HILIC is a type of chromatography that uses an organic/aqueous mobile phase and a polar stationary phase. In HILIC, water is a strong solvent, and unlike in Reversed Phase Liquid Chromatography (RPLC), increasing the proportion of water in the mobile phase reduces the retention time of the analyte. The paper discusses when to consider HILIC analysis methods, the advantages of HILIC, and the challenges often encountered due to the lack of understanding of HILIC mechanisms compared to RPLC. It also provides a systematic flowchart for intelligent solutions for HILIC analysis method development, which includes a three-step approach for chromatography analysis method development. The first step involves gathering as much information as possible about the analyte (e.g., pKa, log P, log D). The second step involves analyzing the sample under different pH conditions using three HILIC columns in either isocratic or gradient mode to identify the suitable column/pH combination for the analyte. The third step involves optimizing the separation by investigating other parameters such as temperature and ionic strength, and assessing the robustness of the method. The paper emphasizes that the selection of the appropriate stationary/mobile phase combination, based on the differences between the HILIC stationary phases and the mobile phase pH, can provide high selectivity in the analysis. This step-by-step approach can help users develop an efficient analysis method.

  • The hydrodynamic instability of the three-dimensional boundary layer on a rotating disk introduces a periodic modulation of the mean flow in the form of stationary cross flow vortices. The instability labeled Type II by Faller occurs first at lower Reynolds number than that of well known Type I instability. Detailed numerical values of the amplification rates, neutral curves and other characteristics of the two instabilities have been calculated over a wide range of parameters. Presented are the neutral stability results concerning the two instability modes by solving the appropriate linear stability equations reformulated not only by considering whole convective terms but also by correcting some errors in the previous stability equations. The present stability results agree with the previously known ones within reasonable limit. Consequently, the flow is found to be always stable for a disturbance whose dimensionless wave number is greater than 0.75. Some spatial amplification contours have been computed for the stationary disturbance wave, whose azimuth angle $\varepsilon$= 11.29$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ and for the moving disturbance wave, whose azimuth angle $\varepsilon$ = 12.5$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$. Also, some temporal amplification contours have been computed for the stationary disturbance wave, whose azimuth angle $\varepsilon$= 11.29$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ and for the moving disturbance wave, whose azimuth angle $\varepsilon$= 12$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$. The flow instability was observed by using a white titanium tetrachloride gas over rotating disk system. When the numerical results are compared to the present experimental data, the numerical results agree quantitatively, indicating the existence of the selective frequency mechanism.

  • Methylobacillus sp. strain SK1, which grows only on methanol, was found to grow in the absence of added copper. The doubling time (t$_{d}$ = 1.3 h) of the bacterium growing at the exponential growth phase at 30.deg.C in the absence of copper was the same as that of the cell growing in the presence of copper. The bacterium growing after the exponential phase in the absence of copper, however, grew faster than the cell growing in the presence of copper. Cells harvested after thee arly stationary phase in the presence of copper were found to exhibit no methanol dehydrogenase (MDH) activity, but the amount and subunit structure of the enzyme in the cells were almost the same as that in cells harboring active MDH. Pellets of the cells harvested after the early stationary phase in the presence of copper were pale green. Cell-free extracts prepared from cells harvested at the early stationary phase in the presence of copper were pink and exhibited MDH activity, but it turned dark-green rapidly from the surface under air. The green-colored portions of the extracts showed no MDH activity and contained c-type cytochromes that were oxidized completely. The inactive MDH activity and contained c-type cytochromes that were oxidized completely. The inactive MDH proteins in the green portions were found to have antigenic sites identical to those of the active one as the inactive MDHs in cells grown in the presence of copper. The bacterium was found to accumulate copper actively during the exponential growth phase. MDH prepared from cells grown in the presence or absence of copper was found to be more stable under nitrogen gas than under air. Methanol at 10 mM was found to enhance the stability of the MDH under air.r.

  • This paper treats the conditions for the existence and stability properties of stationary solutions of reaction-diffusion equations of Gierer-Meinhardt type, subject to Neumann boundary data. The domains in which diffusion takes place are of three types: a regular hexagon, a rectangle and an isosceles rectangular triangle. Considering one of the relevant features of the domains as a bifurcation parameter it will be shown that at a certain critical value a diffusion driven instability occurs and Turing bifurcation takes place: a pattern emerges.

  • In order to optimize process conditions for manufacturing retorted Kimchi soup by using stationary and rotary types systems were applied for sterilization process. For investigating the differences in heat penetration characteristics during sterilization, Kimchi soup was packed into retort pouches, and sterility ($F_0$ value) at various positions in the product was measured through a wireless $F_0$ sensor. Heat penetration characteristics were significantly affected by sterilization method. From data analysis, optimum ranges of sterilization temperature and time was determined to be $120.7^{\circ}C$, 13 min for rotary type and $120.7^{\circ}C$, 20 min for stationary type. At those conditions, they had similar sterility ($F_0$ value). The results showed that rotation provides faster heat penetration and more uniform sterility than various positions of the product. These results derived a lot of advantages from related industry. For instance, many of the more viscous semi-liquid products and heat sensitive natural products could be sterilized in the lager pouch sizes without overcooking or scorching. Hence, current study suggests that rotary type retort would make it possible not only to reduce processing times as 35~45%, but also to improve the quality of product as overall taste, flavor, color, and texture with significant difference (p<0.05).

  • Activated carbons were prepared from pine bark by steam activation, and pore structures and specific surface areas were then investigated. Three different types of kilns were used for the activation. When the stationary-vertical-or stationary-horizontal-type kiln was used for the steam activation to prepare an activated carbon from the bark, it was not possible to produce activated carbon having high specific surface areas exceeding 1,000 $m^2/g$. Using bark powder improved the specific surface area, but it was still not high enough. When the rotary-horizontal-type kiln was used for the activation, the activated carbons prepared had high specific surface areas of more than 1,000$m^2/g$, which was similar to a commercial first-grade activated carbon. The activated carbon prepared by the rotary kiln had a wide distribution of pore size ranging from microporous to mesoporous.
