A comparative study of frictional force in self-ligating brackets according to the bracket-archwire angulation, bracket material, and wire type

  • Objective: This study aimed to compare the frictional force (FR) in self-ligating brackets among different bracket-archwire angles, bracket materials, and archwire types. Methods: Passive and active metal self-ligating brackets and active ceramic self-ligating brackets were included as experimental groups, while conventional twin metal brackets served as a control group. All brackets were maxillary premolar brackets with 0.022 inch [in] slots and a $-7^{\circ}$ torque. The orthodontic wires used included 0.018 round and $0.019{\times}0.025$ in rectangular stainless steel wires. The FR was measured at $0^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$, and $10^{\circ}$ angulations as the wire was drawn through the bracket slots after attaching brackets from each group to the universal testing machine. Static and kinetic FRs were also measured. Results: The passive self-ligating brackets generated a lower FR than all the other brackets. Static and kinetic FRs generally increased with an increase in the bracket-archwire angulation, and the rectangular wire caused significantly higher static and kinetic FRs than the round wire (p < 0.001). The metal passive self-ligating brackets exhibited the lowest static FR at the $0^{\circ}$ angulation and a lower increase in static and kinetic FRs with an increase in bracket-archwire angulation than the other brackets, while the conventional twin brackets showed a greater increase than all three experimental brackets. Conclusions: The passive self-ligating brackets showed the lowest FR in this study. Self-ligating brackets can generate varying FRs in vitro according to the wire size, surface characteristics, and bracket-archwire angulation.

Study on failure behaviors of mixed-mode cracks under static and dynamic loads

  • In the present study, a series of physical experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the effects of mode I and mixed-mode I/II cracks on the fracture modes and stability of roadway tunnel models. The experiments and simulations incorporated different inclination angle flaws under both static and dynamic loads. The quasi-static and dynamic testing were conducted by using an electro-hydraulic servo control device and drop weight impact system (DWIS), and the failure process was simulated by using rock failure process analysis (RFPA) and AUTODYN software. The stress intensity factor was also calculated to evaluate the stability of the flawed roadway tunnel models by using ABAQUS software. According to comparisons between the test and numerical results, it is observed that for flawed roadways with a single radical crack and inclination angle of 45°, the static and dynamic stability are the lowest relative to other angles of fractured rock masses. For mixed-mode I/II cracks in flawed roadway tunnel models under dynamic loading, a wing crack is produced and the pre-existing cracks increase the stress concentration factor in the right part of the specimen, but this factor will not be larger than the maximum principal stress region in the roadway tunnel models. Additionally, damage to the sidewalls will be involved in the flawed roadway tunnel models under static loads.

  • In this study, we performed the biomechanical analysis of cervical plate systems by using a computer simulation based on finite element method to derive reliable model by analysis of design variables and fatigue behavior. To simulate the cervical spine movement in-vivo state by surgery, we modeled the cervical plate system which consisted of screws, rings, rivets, and plate and Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) Block. The experiment of cervical plate system followed the ASTM F1717 standards that covered the materials and methods for the static and fatigue testing. The result of computer simulation is compared with experimented test. We expected this study is to derive reliable results by analysis of design variables and fatigue behavior for developing a new model.

  • Rubber isolator has many advantages compared with steel spring mount. Rubber has high internal damping and can be formed various shape depending on specific purpose. On the contrary, low modulus of elasticity of rubber results the instability of rubber isolator by buckling phenomenon. This paper presents the development of shear type rubber isolator for industrial application by using shear rigidity property of rubber. The static load-deflection characteristics of developed isolator has been analyzed by the FEM. Consequently, the static load testing and a measure of the effectiveness of a vibration isolator in terms of force transissibility for developed isolator have been carried out.

  • 그 동안 몇 차례 오스터버그 셀$(O-cell^{\circledR})$을 이용한 양방향 말뚝 재하시험기법이 국내에 성공적으로 소개/적용된 바 있다. 이 방법은 상대적으로 새롭고 독특한 방법으로서 시험비용과 기존 재래적인 시험방법이 적용상 제한을 받는 경우나 대규모 시험에서 발생할 수 있는 문제점들을 극복할 수 있다. 국내에서는 설계목적을 위한 시험말뚝 뿐 아니라 설계하중이 큰 실제말뚝에 대한 시험이 증가하는 추세에 있다. 이 논문에서 소개하는 양방향 재하시험 방법을 적용하면 기존의 소규모 재하시험 방법에서 발생될 수 있는 주면 마찰력과 선단지지력의 분리측정이나 각각의 지지력에 대한 극한상태를 확인하지 못하는 한계를 극복할 수 있고 시험하중이 270MN을 초과하는 경우까지 적용할 수 있는 장점을 갖고 있다. 본 논문에서는 오스터버그 셀을 이용한 정적 재하시험 방법에 대하여 말뚝종류별로 상세히 기술하였으며 이 시험방법의 장점과 국내현장에 적용되었던 사례를 소개하였다.

  • It is very difficult to accomplish load tests of piles with large diameter constructed on the offshore area, because of requirement for large scaled loading equipment and bad testing conditions. Therefore, so far in many cases pile driving dynamic formulas have applied to quality control, and recently dynamic load test method is widely used for confirming bearing capacities of such piles. However, in cases of piles with very large diameter about 2,500mm, it is nearly impossible for regular type load test methods of piles such as static and dynamic to apply owing to very large design load. This is case studies of load tests such as modified static and dynamic load tests of piles and point load tests of rock samples for estimating rational allowable bearing capacity of very large diameter piles constructed on the marine area.

경추용 자립형 케이지의 실험적 평가 (Testing Evaluation for Stand-Alone Cervical Cage)

  • Stand-alone cervical cage consists of a PEEK body, Ti plate, and screw, which are configured as a single-piece. Through a single operation, this implantable medical device is capable of completely fixing the cervical vertebral body. For example, instead of a plate, which is normally used, the intervertebral disc is removed and replaced with a cervical cage. It should be noted that in Korea, KFDA guidelines for a stand-alone cervical cage have not yet been suggested. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present the systematic study of the static compression test, static torsion test, dynamic compression test, and expulsion test. Further, the test method is designed to refer to the ASTM standard and relative literature.

  • Shear properties of plastic bottle film/plastic bottle film and plastic bottle film/granitic soil which were evaluated from static friction tests. The monotonic shear experiments were performed by using an tilt table apparatus and large direct shear device. The test results showed that the friction angle of each interface and the interface depended on the amount of normal stress, the type of the interface used. Therefore, the testing method should be determined carefully by considering the type of loads and normal stress expected in the field with using the materials installed in the site.

  • In this study, small scale model test was performed to verify the ultimate load capacity of spillway pier structure under static load. The 1/20 scale test specimen was made of specially designed micro-concrete and wire mesh. From the test result, the cracking load of specimen was 10 tonf and the ultimate was 19tonf. From the similarity rule, cracking and ultimate load of prototype pier structure were predicted 4000 tonf, 7600 ton, respectively.
